The “Journey” Of Doctoral Study In Applied Psychology: Lived Experiences Of Students In Counseling, Clinical, And School Psychology, Jason S. Frydman, Linda Cheung, Joseph G. Ponterotto

The Qualitative Report

A qualitative methodology was adopted to explore the lived experiences of doctoral level students in applied psychology. A total of 15 students ranging in age from 24 to 43, who were at varying levels of their doctoral education, participated in individual semi-structured interviews exploring themes related to influences for the pursuit of graduate study, experiences in their program of study, and general reflections of the graduate school journey. All interviews were conducted from a constructivist-interpretivist model, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using a phenomenological coding approach (Creswell, 2012; Moustakas, 1994). Emergent broad themes included antecedents leading to graduate study, current experience …

A Model For Developing Interdisciplinary Research Theoretical Frameworks, A. S. Cohenmiller, Elizabeth Pate Jun 2019

A Model For Developing Interdisciplinary Research Theoretical Frameworks, A. S. Cohenmiller, Elizabeth Pate

The Qualitative Report

Embedded in interdisciplinary research, just as in disciplinary research, are statements of purpose, theoretical frameworks, research questions, reviews of literature, methodology, findings, recommendations, and more However, one of the least understood aspects of interdisciplinary research is the interdisciplinary research (IDR) theoretical framework. This article is intended to serve as a platform for dialogue within and across disciplines about interdisciplinary research and interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks. In addition, it provides a model for developing an IDR theoretical framework through an illustrative example of how an IDR theoretical framework was created and used within a dissertation study. We conclude the article noting critical …

Exploring Counselors’ Personal Guiding Theories: A Qualitative Study In Portraiture, Amy L. Barth, Jane E. Rheineck, Carrie Merino Dr.

The Qualitative Report

A personal guiding theory of counseling is an important component of professional identity development for counselors. We utilized the qualitative methodology of portraiture to explore how professional counselors understand their own personal guiding theories of counseling. Three research portraits are shared that demonstrate how participants use the counseling relationship as the means to incorporate their personal guiding theories into their work with clients. Implications for counselors and counselor educators and future research are presented.

Reexamining The Impact Of Medicaid Expansion In A Post-Affordable Care Act Environment From A Critical Race Perspective, Ty Price Dooley Jun 2019

Reexamining The Impact Of Medicaid Expansion In A Post-Affordable Care Act Environment From A Critical Race Perspective, Ty Price Dooley

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 drastically transformed the health care system in the United States. This paper examines the factors influencing state decisions relative to Medicaid expansion in a post-ACA environment through the lens of Critical Race Theory. This study incorporates economic, geographic and health variables into a model of post-ACA-Medicaid decision-making by using logistic regression to examine State Medicaid expansion from 2010 to 2014. The size of the minority population in state, tobacco use and southern distinctiveness are significant predictors of decision making relative to Medicaid expansion. Findings support that racialized …

Issue 15: Economic Precarity Among Syrian Refugee Families Living In Lebanon: Policy Recommendations To Restore Hope In The Context Of Displacement, Bree Akesson, Dena Badawi

International Migration Research Centre

The conflict in Syria has been described as the largest humanitarian crisis to date. Ongoing for over eight years, the conflict has resulted in over five million refugees and 6.6 million people internally displaced within the borders of Syria. Most refugees from Syria have been displaced to neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Lebanon. Lebanon is host to over one million Syrian refugees. Prior to the Syrian crisis, Lebanon was struggling economically, which has since exacerbated anti-refugee sentiment and government policies that aim to discourage Syrians from seeking refuge in Lebanon. Within Lebanon, Syrian families are challenged with …

You Lead Like A Girl: Gender And Children’S Leadership Development, Alexa J. Trumpy, Marissa Elliott Jun 2019

You Lead Like A Girl: Gender And Children’S Leadership Development, Alexa J. Trumpy, Marissa Elliott

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Recent leadership initiatives encourage children, particularly girls, to defy gender stereotypes. Yet, those creating and participating in these initiatives, like all members of our culture, have their own gender biases, have received gender socialization, and live in a society where the masculine is more valued than the feminine. We conducted participant observation of two gender-segregated leadership summer camps to examine how camp counselors and directors teach leadership to boys and girls. We find counselors unintentionally reinforce gender stereotypes and promote gender-typical behavior while attempting to break down these same stereotypes and behavioral expectations. We argue the gender-segregated environment leads to …

Cross-National Priorities For Civic And Citizenship Education, Tim Friedman, Gabriella Agrusti, Damiani Valeria, Jennifer Hong

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

The ever-changing world we live in has led new challenges for countries in educating their youth to become citizens in the 21st century. This paper explores cross-national priorities for the implementation of civic and citizenship education utilizing data collected across twentyfour countries that participated in the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2016. Information was collected on the main aims and objectives of civic and citizenship education for students at the lower secondary level from educational policy documents as well as how these are perceived at the school level. Results suggest a degree in commonality across countries in the …

Young People’S Use Of Social Media And Internet For Civic Engagement In 21 Countries, Wolfram Schulz, Tim Friedman

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

The use of digital technologies for citizenship engagement has become more widespread over recent years and has led to the conceptualisation of ‘digital citizenship’ as an emerging feature of citizenship participation in societies at the outset of the 21st century. This paper uses data from the recent ICCS 2016 survey to investigate the scope of using social media and the internet for civic engagement among lower-secondary students in 21 countries. It analyses its relationship with context factors and other forms of engagement, and models the influence of a range of contextual and other related variables on variation in students’ use …

Japan’S Policy On The Trans-Pacific Partnership (Tpp) In Light Of Ir Theory And Analytical Eclecticism, Daisuke Akimoto Ph.D. Jun 2019

Japan’S Policy On The Trans-Pacific Partnership (Tpp) In Light Of Ir Theory And Analytical Eclecticism, Daisuke Akimoto Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Japan’s policy toward the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement has been controversial at the political, academic, and public levels. The domestic debate on the TPP literally split public opinion in Japan, and academic analyses are apt to be argumentatively divided into pros and cons. Likewise, earlier studies regarding the TPP in the field of international relations offered particular theoretical perspectives, yet tended not to conduct eclectic theoretical examination. In order to overcome the research gap, this paper attempts to provide both narrative and theoretical explanations by applying international relations (IR) theory in combination with “analytical eclecticism” as a research method in …

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper aims to identify similarities and differences in the attitudes and traits of entrepreneurs in four countries, Japan and three Mediterranean countries, and it analyzes how cultural diversity can influence business and entrepreneurial experience. To this end, two questionnaires were completed by entrepreneurs of 188 small businesses in Japan, Italy, Spain and Portugal at a time when all these countries had been hit by the global economic crisis. The indices of the Hofstede dimensions were obtained from the VSM 94 questionnaire. The second open-ended questionnaire adds information about each case in the field of entrepreneurship. The qualitative case analysis …

The Death Penalty: The Law Lords Alter Course In The Commonwealth Caribbean, Harold A. Young J.D./Llb, Phd Jun 2019

The Death Penalty: The Law Lords Alter Course In The Commonwealth Caribbean, Harold A. Young J.D./Llb, Phd

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article is a critical examination of the decisions of the Judicial Council of the Privy Council (JCPC) in death penalty appeals from the Commonwealth Caribbean from 1966 to 2008. It contributes to our understanding of how court rulings may be influenced by specific aspects of the judicial environment, which is shaped by the majority party in parliament, whose prime minister selects judges and which may make substantive changes in the law. In a quantitative examination of death penalty appeals, I find an increased likelihood that the court will set aside the death penalty when the judicial environment changes.
