International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Within the social sciences, particularly as regards Geography, Economics and Sociology, Religious Tourism is debated taking into account its impact on territories, local populations and the external agents strongly connected with this phenomenon.
In any urbanized area were the actions perpetuated over decades by active agents (both public and private) that have fabricated the extant realities, sanctuaries also integrate a particular touristic system.
It is necessary to establish parameters in order to understand why some sanctuaries do not make it as far as a callow stage of development while others, through a set of synergies, are able to completely change …

As tourism to religious sites increases, visitor management at such sites is an issue that is both complex and fraught with difficulties. While the visitor experience is a matter that concerns the management of the religious site, it must be considered within the wider context of the many stakeholders of the site such as worshippers, guides and clergy. This paper is based on a case study of St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne, which in turn, is part of a larger study. An interview was conducted with the Dean of the cathedral in relation to matters including facilities for visitors …

International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Many travelers whose main motivation is religious tourism (Catholic) have visited the major shrines such as the Holy Land, the Vatican, Lourdes (France) and Fatima (Portugal). After having been in those places/shrines, numerous religious tourists want to visit other sanctuaries but not many programs offer that possibility. With that in mind, three researchers drove from Lisbon (Portugal) to Levoča (Slovakia) nearly always stopping along Marian midsize shrines. The data collected by participant observation allowed the researchers to design three different itineraries - they include the most important Marian midsize shrines and also towns/small cities along the way.

Evangelical Christians’ Reflections Along The Way Of St. James, Sharenda Holland Barlar
Evangelical Christians’ Reflections Along The Way Of St. James, Sharenda Holland Barlar
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Historically, Protestants and Evangelicals in particular have rejected the notion of pilgrimage to visit a saint or holy site. Recently, however, there has been an increased interest and acceptance of pilgrimage to non-traditionally Protestant locations. The Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage in Spain is growing in popularity among Protestants who seek a prolonged period of meditation, retreat, and prayer.
Since a religious pilgrim by definition is someone who travels to pay penance for their sins, how does the Protestant idea of grace and not works affect the evangelical pilgrim? Of particular interest to me is how evangelical students from …

A Comparative Study Between Mozambique And Malawi Soybean Adoption Among Smallholder Farmers, Fridah M. Mubichi
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Demand for soybean in southeast Africa is expected to double between 2010 and 2020 due to the growing population, and increasing demand in the livestock, poultry, and aquaculture industry (Walker and Cunguara 2016). However, the extent to which the current Mozambique and Malawi agricultural development policies support smallholder farmers’ participation in soybean farming is not well understood. To examine this, a comparative policy framework was used to examine how the agricultural development objectives stated by both countries were being implemented and the conditions by which they worked through. The study found that the agricultural development policies adopted by both countries …

Worldviews Apart: Agricultural Extension And Ethiopian Smallholder Farmers, Logan Cochrane
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This article presents an inquiry-based learning assessment into why farmers in the highlands of Ethiopia were not adopting a new planting methodology promoted by the government and non-governmental organizations. It offers a process of reflexivity whereby assumptions emerge as the key barriers to misunderstanding, and focuses on the concept of divergent worldviews as an important consideration for understanding (non)adoption. The learning process offers insight for policy, programming, and research, emphasizing learning instead of definitive conclusions.
Implementing Multilevel Food And Nutrition Security Frameworks In Sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges And Opportunities For Scaling Up Pulses In Ethiopia (A Research Note), Lisa F. Clark
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Increasingly, there is global consensus that pulse crops can help address ongoing nutrition and food security challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence shows that scaling-up production and consumption of pulses grown in sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to make positive contributions to socioeconomic and environmental sustainability. By taking a systems approach to analyze policy documents and stakeholder reports on food and nutrition security, this article argues that policy asymmetries within multilevel governance frameworks challenge efforts to scale-up existing pulse value chains in this region, specifically Ethiopia. It demonstrates that policy sectoralization and siloing between the nutrition and agriculture agendas contribute to …

Contextualizing Developmental Math Content Into Introduction To Sociology In Community Colleges, Stuart Parker, Amy E. Traver, Jonathan Cornick
Publications and Research
Across community colleges in the United States, most students place into a developmental math course that they never pass. This can leave them without the math skills necessary to make informed decisions in major areas of social life and the college credential required for participation in growing sectors of our economy. One strategy for improving community college students’ pass rate in developmental math courses is the contextualization of developmental math content into the fabric of other courses. This article reviews an effort to contextualize developmental math content (i.e., elementary algebra) into Introduction to Sociology at Kingsborough Community College and Queensborough …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Their Role As Mitigators For Youthful And Non-Youthful Offenders In Capital Sentencing Cases, Jessica R. Trapassi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their role as mitigators in capital sentencing is an important, yet relatively unexplored, topic in criminological literature. Using data from the North Carolina Capital Sentencing Project, this study explores the role of ACEs as mitigating factors for youthful and non-youthful capital offenders: whether youthful offenders are less likely to be sentenced to death, whether or not ACEs are effective as mitigating factors, and whether ACE mitigators are more effective for youthful or non-youthful offenders. Results show that youthful capital offenders are less likely to be sentenced to death than adult capital offenders, and while ACE …

To address systemic malnutrition, food insecurity, and a need to manage natural resources sustainably, within the context of an agricultural economy, the Ethiopian government has invested more than 15 percent of the national development budget in agriculture programs as part of the Agriculture Development Led Industrialization (ADLI) plan (MARD 2010; Berhanu and Poulton 2014). This article explores one such program – row planting of Eragrostis tef (tef).
