Improvement Of Under-Represented Minority Individuals In The Healthcare Field Of Communication Sciences And Disorders, Allison Webb Jan 2016

Improvement Of Under-Represented Minority Individuals In The Healthcare Field Of Communication Sciences And Disorders, Allison Webb

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

Individuals from under-represented minority backgrounds are scarce within healthcare careers. Former research has suggested that this lack of diversity begins at the undergraduate level. This proposal discusses a potential solution to this problem occurring at the University of Kentucky and other colleges across the United States. Suggested intervention targeted diverse populations, connected students with faculty and staff, and provided shadowing resources for individuals from under-represented minority backgrounds. Based on research and current diversity statistics, populations of individuals from diverse backgrounds are expected to increase within the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. Demographic information for the fall 2016 semester will become …

Barriers To Fistula Repair In Nigeria: A Formative Study, Population Council

Reproductive Health

A formative research study was conducted in Nigeria to better understand the barriers and enabling factors for fistula repair care delivery and access. This brief presents results from a literature review conducted to identify and understand the delays in accessing and receiving treatment and corresponding barriers, to document interventions that help to overcome barriers, and to specify gaps in the literature that require further research. The report concludes that women’s concern over healing and reintegration reflects their expectation that the holistic approach of hospitals will bring them back to normal life incorporating physical, sexual, psychosocial, and economic rehabilitation. Awareness, financial, …

The pilot intervention described in this brief took place at an apparel manufacturing company, Lotus, located in Port Said, Egypt as part of the Worker Well-being Initiative. Worker Well-being is an initiative of Levi Strauss & Co. and the Levi Strauss Foundation that seeks to move beyond a “do no harm” compliance model of labor rights in its global supply chain. The interventions in Egypt have contributed to the overall development of a health system–strengthening approach to private workplaces, which is a new concept for management. The work in Egypt contributed to a collaboration between the Evidence Project/RAISE Health and …

Finding Parenthood- Parental Identity Through Assisted Reproductive Methods And The Implications For Efficacy Based And Worth Based Self-Esteem, Ashley Rae Steckler

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This research examined the implications for efficacy based and worth based self-esteem among 266 infertile women who had utilized reproductive technologies within heterosexual partnerships in order to have genetic children and become parents. Drawing on a theory of self-esteem, within an identity theory framework, this research compared self-esteem between women who were currently utilizing assisted reproductive technologies to have children and women who had successfully used assisted reproductive technologies to have children and become parents. Self-esteem was measured by utilizing Cast and Burke’s (2002) Worth-Based and Efficacy-Based Self-esteem Scale in order to test the following three hypotheses: 1) self-verification (successfully …

Older housing stock is one suspected cause of poor indoor air quality and poor indoor air quality can cause many negative health conditions. Four hazardous conditions related to indoor air quality were examined for this study: lead, asbestos, dampness causing mold and radon. North Minneapolis residents, specifically low-income, disproportionately live in older stock houses and have higher rates of asthma compared to other parts of the state. In this study, data was collected to understand North Minneapolis residents' knowledge and awareness of indoor air quality in older residences. Fifteen minute interviews followed by a brief sociodemographic questionnaire were used to …

Perceptions Of Female Sexual Pathology: The Role Of Racial Biases In Clinical Decision Making, Jerusha Sanjeevi Jan 2016

Perceptions Of Female Sexual Pathology: The Role Of Racial Biases In Clinical Decision Making, Jerusha Sanjeevi

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Diversity issues such as multicultural competence and sexual health competence have received increased but separate academic attention in recent years. Although empirical support has been found for the presence of racial biases in the diagnoses of mental health disorders, there is no evidence to date regarding the role of racial biases in the diagnoses of female sexual pathology. In the present study, 101 pre-doctoral psychology interns across the United States assessed the symptom severity of a fictional client via online vignettes in which client race was experimentally manipulated. Participants did not report significantly different symptom severity ratings between the vignettes …

The Influence Of Time On Food Intake Patterns: Age, Period, Cohort Differences, Karina L. Christopher Jan 2016

The Influence Of Time On Food Intake Patterns: Age, Period, Cohort Differences, Karina L. Christopher

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

The impact of diet and exercise on overall health and chronic disease risk has been well examined. Multiple studies show that Americans eat more now than they did fifty years ago. What isn’t known is how much of an impact time has on food intake patterns of individuals in terms of different age groups, historic periods of structural influences, and birth cohorts.

In order to identify the impact of time on food intake this study examined time from multiple perspectives. The first aim of this study was to determine food intake patterns among age groups across five time periods using …

Does Shifting Gender Norms On The Community Level Lead To Increased Hiv Services Uptake?, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

Project SOAR and partners are building on an ongoing National Institute of Mental Health–funded randomized controlled trial being conducted in South Africa—Community Mobilization for Treatment as Prevention. Specifically, the study aims to strengthen and expand the gender content of the intervention to engage both women and men in critically examining gender norms and power inequalities. This brief presents the particularly timely study that will address a key question in the field as to how gender norms may operate to affect HIV service utilization. Building the evidence base in this area is vital for improving care outcomes as well as creating …

Estimating The Costs Of Providing Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision In South Africa, Project Soar Jan 2016

Estimating The Costs Of Providing Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision In South Africa, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

The South African government introduced voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as an HIV-prevention intervention in 2010, based on the compelling evidence that VMMC reduces men’s risk of becoming HIV infected by approximately 60 percent. To inform strategic planning for continued scale-up of its VMMC program and better understand cost drivers and cost variances across provinces, the South African National Department of Health in 2014 requested estimates of the unit cost of VMMC and the level of current spending for VMMC demand creation. The results of this study provide a comprehensive analysis of the unit cost of providing VMMC in South …

Law Enforcement As A Form Of Development: Community Policing In The United States, Michael Reynolds Jan 2016

Law Enforcement As A Form Of Development: Community Policing In The United States, Michael Reynolds

MA IDS Thesis Projects

The evolution of crime throughout time has required a development of alternative policing methodologies in the United States. One result of this is community policing, where problem solving became foundational to solving crime, transitioning from reactionary to prevention-based policing tactics. However, serious issues with community policing persist. This paper considers the role of police officers as development actors, introducing a foundational philosophy of development and formulating new principles and suggestions for modern police tactics.

The Impact Of Formal Extracurricular Activities On Satisfaction And Attitudes-Toward-School Among At-Risk Adolescents, Derek G. Miller Jan 2016

The Impact Of Formal Extracurricular Activities On Satisfaction And Attitudes-Toward-School Among At-Risk Adolescents, Derek G. Miller

MA IDS Thesis Projects

At-risk adolescents, comprised mainly of low-income African American and Hispanic/Latino students, tend to disengage and dropout of school because they lack a bond to school and society. Formal extracurricular activity in schools is one way to develop student involvement and attachment to school. The researcher sought to explore how participation of at-risk adolescent students in formal extracurricular sport activity impacted their academic perceptions, attitudes toward school, motivation, and satisfaction with life. The researcher also examined whether location, international versus local, made a difference in the impact of formal extracurricular activities on at-risk adolescent students. Seventy-four at-risk adolescent and primarily students …

Adolescent Sex Offender Registration Policy: Perspectives On General Deterrence Potential From Criminology And Developmental Psychology, Cynthia J. Najdowski, H. M. Cleary, M. C. Stevenson Jan 2016

Adolescent Sex Offender Registration Policy: Perspectives On General Deterrence Potential From Criminology And Developmental Psychology, Cynthia J. Najdowski, H. M. Cleary, M. C. Stevenson

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Sex offender registration policies have expanded rapidly, now extending to adolescent offenders across the nation. Policies mandating registration are based, in part, on arguments that registration is needed to prevent dangerous sex offenders from committing additional offenses and that risk of registration deters would-be offenders from offending in the first place. Research suggests that registration does not serve the former specific deterrent function for adolescents, but less is known regarding the latter goal of general deterrence. The disciplines of criminology and developmental psychology both offer important theoretical perspectives, but these frameworks have yet to be applied to this unique context. …

Ethnic And Gender Differences In Strategies Used By Adolescents When Attempting To Quit Or Reduce Smoking, Ali M. Yurasek, Leslie A. Robinson, Gilbert R. Parra Jan 2016

Ethnic And Gender Differences In Strategies Used By Adolescents When Attempting To Quit Or Reduce Smoking, Ali M. Yurasek, Leslie A. Robinson, Gilbert R. Parra

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Few adolescent smoking cessation programs have been able to match the success rate found in adult programs. The current study identified smoking cessation strategies used by adolescents and whether strategies differed as a function of ethnic, gender, or individual smoking-level. Participants were 136 high school students who made an attempt to quit or reduce their smoking. Logistic regressions revealed that individuals making an actual quit attempt and African American adolescents used cessation strategies presumed to be more effective. Adolescents are more likely to use informal cessation methods and may need to be provided with more information on effective quit strategies.

Aggregate Level Biographical Outcomes For Gay And Lesbian Movements: Collective Identity, Lifecourse, And Generations, Nancy Whittier Jan 2016

Aggregate Level Biographical Outcomes For Gay And Lesbian Movements: Collective Identity, Lifecourse, And Generations, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

Social movements have attracted much attention in recent years, both from scholars and among the wider public. This book examines the consequences of social movements, covering such issues as the impact of social movements on the life course of participants and the population in general, on political elites and markets, and on political parties and processes of social movement institutionalization. The volume makes a significant contribution to research on social movement outcomes in three ways: theoretically, by showing the importance of hitherto undervalued topics in the study of social movements outcomes; methodologically, by expanding the scientific boundaries of this research …

Factors Related To High Risk Drinking And Subsequent Alcohol-Related Consequences Among College Students, Courtney Hittepole Jan 2016

Factors Related To High Risk Drinking And Subsequent Alcohol-Related Consequences Among College Students, Courtney Hittepole

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Within the United States, high risk and dangerous binge drinking is one of the greatest public health concerns facing college students and college campuses. Additionally, subsequent alcohol-related consequences, including but not limited to, physical violence, sexual assault, and risky sexual behavior have significant impacts on the experience of undergraduate students. With such high-risk consequences, it is imperative that binge drinking and alcohol-related consequence trends are known and understood. As such, the Indiana College Substance Use Survey (ICSUS) was developed by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University to gain a broad understanding of substance use among university undergraduates. In …

The Consequences Of ‘Choice’: Experiencing Youth Peer Culture In A Racial And Ethnic Integration School Reform, Grace Hall Jan 2016

The Consequences Of ‘Choice’: Experiencing Youth Peer Culture In A Racial And Ethnic Integration School Reform, Grace Hall

Sociology Honors Papers

Since Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, racial and ethnic diversity and integration as well as educational equality has become a prominent consideration for American educational policy. While attempts have been made to increase integration, reforms have often fallen short due to residential segregation and choices spurred by parental privilege. These racial and ethnic integration reforms have had effects on individuals and communities; yet, the young people who daily experience these reforms are not having their voices heard. Therefore, this qualitative analysis examines how young people of color perceive and experience a racial and ethnic integration reform, especially with …
