Low Desire, Trauma, And Femininity In The Dsm-5: A Case For Sequelae, Alyson K. Spurgas Mar 2015

Low Desire, Trauma, And Femininity In The Dsm-5: A Case For Sequelae, Alyson K. Spurgas

Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The recently released DSM-5 (2013) includes a new sexual dysfunction: Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD). For the first time, the low sexual desire disorders are split along gender lines, and lack of sexual ‘receptivity’ is offered as a criterion for diagnosis in women only. Although ‘severe relationship distress’ or other ‘significant stressors’ are to be considered during evaluation for FSIAD, the patient’s trauma history is not evaluated as part of the protocol. The presence of violence or distress can potentially elicit a differential diagnosis, but what constitutes ‘severity’ is not articulated either, except to designate ‘partner violence’ as the primary …

Most Americans Are Now Opposed To Laws Against Interracial Marriage, But Their Behavior Does Not Yet Reflect These Attitudes, Ginny Garcia-Alexander, Richard Lewis Jr., Joanne Foed-Robertson Mar 2015

Most Americans Are Now Opposed To Laws Against Interracial Marriage, But Their Behavior Does Not Yet Reflect These Attitudes, Ginny Garcia-Alexander, Richard Lewis Jr., Joanne Foed-Robertson

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent decades have seen a dramatic fall in the number of people that support laws which prohibit interracial marriages, and an increase in the number of these marriages. But why does the rate of interracial marriages remain so low, when compared to same-race marriages? Using national data from the past three decades, Ginny E. Garcia, Richard Lewis Jr., and Joanne Ford-Robertson show that while attitudes towards interracial marriages have changed, many groups still have negative attitudes towards Black-White unions. They find that those who perceive social and economic competition with Blacks, such as those with lower levels of education, were …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Athletic Apparel And Equipment Sponsorship Related To Student-Athlete Recruitment, Melissa J. Davies, Katharine A. Burakowski Mar 2015

A Qualitative Analysis Of Athletic Apparel And Equipment Sponsorship Related To Student-Athlete Recruitment, Melissa J. Davies, Katharine A. Burakowski

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to extend previous literature on student-athlete college choice by examining part of the recruitment process as a precursor to student-athlete decision-making. More specifically, this exploratory study aimed to empirically examine the extent to which apparel sponsorships affect student-athlete recruitment. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten football players at a state-supported NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) institution in the Rocky Mountain region. An inductive approach was used in identifying three emergent themes. These themes suggest that football players at this institution did not hold the apparel and equipment sponsorship as a deciding factor for the …

Goal Orientation And Reading Strategy Use Of Turkish Students Of An English Language Teaching Department, Leyla Tercanlioglu, Hakan Demiröz

The Qualitative Report

This study aims to investigate qualitatively the role of goal orientation in reading comprehension both in native (L1) and second or foreign languages (L2), and the reading strategy use in L1 and L2 of the Turkish advanced students of an English Language Teaching (ELT) Department in order to understand the pedagogical aspects of reading. The data of this phenomenological study come from one-on-one, semi-structured interviews carried out with 8 Turkish ELT students; 4 preparatory class students, 4 firstyear students, who take a reading course. The results of the study demonstrated that the participants had a variety of goal orientations which …

Fearless Friday: Tiarra Riggins, Christina L. Bassler

SURGE

As we conclude Yik Yak Awareness Week, we’d like to recognize Tiarra Riggins ’17, the fearless organizer behind this week’s events. ”People don’t realize how words can damage a soul,” says Tiarra. Her efforts this week have been aimed at stopping cyberbullying and changing the culture of Yik Yak to a more positive and uplifting space. The events during this past week ranged from a discussion on the effects of cyberbullying to daily CUB tables, encouraging students to sign a banner against cyberbullying and the negative aspects of Yik Yak. Measuring The Support Networks Of Transition-Age Foster Youth: Preliminary Validation Of A Social Network Assessment For Research And Practice, Jennifer E. Blakeslee Mar 2015

Measuring The Support Networks Of Transition-Age Foster Youth: Preliminary Validation Of A Social Network Assessment For Research And Practice, Jennifer E. Blakeslee

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multi-dimensional social support is an important factor in any positive transition into young adulthood, and youth who are exiting foster care ideally receive comprehensive social support from a range of informal and formal sources. Yet the social networks of transition-age foster youth are likely influenced over time by child welfare involvement, which can weaken or disrupt natural support relationships, while introducing service-oriented relationships that are not intended to last into adulthood. To better understand the social support context of youth aging out of care, we can apply social network theory and methods to systematically identify their networks of supportive relationships …

The Pig and The Python …

The Effects Of Women's Attitudes Towards Divorce On Marital Instability In Rural Malawi, Kim Deslandes Mar 2015

The Effects Of Women's Attitudes Towards Divorce On Marital Instability In Rural Malawi, Kim Deslandes

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Conferences

Poster Presentation

Some women in sub-Saharan Africa have successfully managed to promote their own agenda using marital strategies and, in return, have gained greater control over their lives. While we know which factors are likely to predict a union dissolution, we know little about the effects of women's attitudes toward divorce on marital stability in sub-Saharan Africa. To bridge this gap, we use data from the Malawi Longitudinal Study on Family and Health and between 1998 and 2008 to assess the effects of women’s attitude toward divorce on a series of contexts carrying large social and economic implications for a …

Marriage Patterns In Historical Perspective: What Can We Learn From Three Centuries Of Marriages In Quebec?, Marianne Caron Mar 2015

Marriage Patterns In Historical Perspective: What Can We Learn From Three Centuries Of Marriages In Quebec?, Marianne Caron

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Conferences

Poster Presentation

The historical demographic literature on marriage has devoted a great deal of attention to understanding how and why age at marriage and the rate of celibacy were historically higher in North Western European countries. More recently, comparative work in a Eurasian perspective confirmed earlier and more universal marriages in Asia. On the other side, North America also had earlier ages at first marriages and lower rates of permanent celibacy than North Western Europe, but later marriage than Asia. This study will provide insights on marriage patterns in a region somewhere in the middle of North Western European and …

Probabilistic Records Linkage Using Historical Canadian Censuses And Vital Statistics, Stacey A. Hallman Mar 2015

Probabilistic Records Linkage Using Historical Canadian Censuses And Vital Statistics, Stacey A. Hallman

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Conferences

Poster Presentation

This poster presents the results of a records linkage project to analyze potential mortality risks for young adults in Ontario during the 1918 influenza epidemic. With a team of research assistants at Western University, McMaster University, and the Université de Montréal, death records were linked to birth records in order to determine exact date of birth for the calculation of exact age at death. This date of birth is then compared to age as listed on other historical documents, such as the 1901 and 1911 Canadian censuses. The family environment (or living situation) was transcribed for each individual …

Exceptional Longevity: Are Socioeconomic Conditions In Childhood Important?, Valérie Jarry, Alain Gagnon, Robert Bourbeau

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Conferences

The close relationship between early childhood conditions and health and mortality outcomes in old age has been extensively studied in both the epidemiological and demographic fields. The channels through which early life is hypothesized to influence mortality are diverse and could be direct or indirect via adult characteristics. Despite the ample evidence on the influence of childhood conditions on overall longevity, less established in the literature is whether this association holds true within long lived families and whether this is a direct effect or an indirect effect. In this paper we investigate the association between socioeconomic and biodemographic factors in …

Trends in the median age at marriage have been well documented, yet very little is known about median age at first cohabitation, especially among recent cohorts in Canada. Using the 2011 Canadian GSS, I document changes across birth cohorts in the type of first union Canadians form and assess whether increases in cohabitation have offset declines in marriage in Canada. I also examine regional and educational differences in the propensity of Canadians to marry or cohabit with their first partner and how these differences have changed over 50 years. Finally, I examine age at first union formation, at …

Local Scale Population Projection Methods: Shrinking And Aging Communities, Maxwell Hartt Mar 2015

Local Scale Population Projection Methods: Shrinking And Aging Communities, Maxwell Hartt

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Conferences

Poster Presentation

The emergence of a globalized economy has given rise to ‘global cities’ where knowledge, resource and human capital conglomerate – often at the cost of outmigration of resources in smaller cities. In the Canadian context, the growth of a few major centers is contrasted with many smaller and peripheral cities that may be coping with shrinking populations and economic decline. These effects are increasingly compounded by a second demographic transition, which is characterized by falling birth rates and an aging population. Continued loss of population, changing demographic structure, and economic decline can lead to a myriad of challenges, …

Leaving Work, Leaving Home: Job Loss And Socio-Geographic Mobility In Canada, Nicole Denier

Poster Presentation

The recent economic downturn magnified a routine occurrence in the Canadian labor market: involuntary job loss resulting from an employer downsizing, moving, or going out of business. Yet, in recent decades, even in times of economic expansion, rates of involuntary job loss have persisted across a wide-range of demographic and labor market groups. Moving is one way individuals may respond to job loss, either to relocate to cheaper housing or in search of work. Drawing on data from the 1996-2010 Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, this article examines the relationship between involuntary job loss and geographic mobility …
