The Process Of Separation For Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence: Evaluating Risk Of Indirect And Physical Abuse Relating To Interpersonal Events, Brittany E. Hayes Feb 2014

The Process Of Separation For Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence: Evaluating Risk Of Indirect And Physical Abuse Relating To Interpersonal Events, Brittany E. Hayes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Previous research has found that risk of physical abuse increases during the process of separation (Brownridge, 2006). Given the opportunity structure changes once the separation process begins, abusers may be more likely to engage in indirect abuse when their partner begins the process. Indirect abuse is the use of third parties, such as children or family/friends, to manipulate the abused woman. In the current study, opportunity is measured with both events abused women report and relationship characteristics that increase or decrease the likelihood the victim and offender converge in time and space.

The study relies on data from the Chicago …

Psychological Contracts In Information Exchanges, Stanislav Mamonov Feb 2014

Psychological Contracts In Information Exchanges, Stanislav Mamonov

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Information assets continue to grow in importance of contribution to economic activity. Many emergent businesses, including Google, Amazon and Facebook, leverage crowd-sourced information assets as essential pillars supporting their business models. The appropriation of rights to information assets is commonly done through legal contracts. In practice this approach often fails to prevent conflicts between the information contributors and the companies claiming information rights. In research presented here I attempt to understand when and why the conflicts arise. I draw on psychological contract theory and I develop the framework of psychological contracts in information exchanges. I propose that intellectual property and …

"When I Heard About The March": Testimonies And Participatory Archiving In Peacebuilding, Carolina Muñoz Proto

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies the Memoscopio archive and its collection of testimonies about the 2009 World March for Peace and Nonviolence (the March). This collection came into existence during 2009 and 2010 through a participatory archiving project carried out by a team of peace advocates and researchers in collaboration with March participants. The March was a transnational and decentralized campaign that promoted peace, nonviolence, and justice through activities in 600 cities, social media, and a three-month march around the world. Through the case of Memoscopio and the March, this dissertation explores the personal and cultural meanings of transnational peace marchers in …

Teachers At Work: Factors Influencing Satisfaction, Retention And The Professional Well-Being Of Elementary And Secondary Educators, Patrick Edward O'Reilly

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study has been to explore the question of how factors in the work lives of teachers influence their experience of workplace satisfaction, and how satisfaction influences retention in the teaching profession. This study had three specific goals: (1) to examine whether five specified factors that teachers' encounter as workers influence their professional satisfaction, (2) to explore whether teacher satisfaction influences retention in the profession and (3) to determine whether school level taught plays a role in degrees of satisfaction a teacher experiences.

Data was collected over a period of five months, using a survey administered to …

Acts Of Belonging: Perceptions Of Citizenship Among Queer Turkish Women In Germany, Ilgin Yorukoglu Feb 2014

Acts Of Belonging: Perceptions Of Citizenship Among Queer Turkish Women In Germany, Ilgin Yorukoglu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines how people who have multiple identifications develop a sense of belonging. It focuses on those with politicized, romanticized, and stigmatized identifications which are assumed to be in conflict with one another. My particular case is that of "queer" women of Turkish descent in Germany with Berlin as my main study site.

These people embody what is considered to be an oxymoron: being queer yet also Turkish, being a lesbian yet having a Muslim background, being of immigrant origin yet also German. In short, they are between all worlds and thus, seemingly, do not belong anywhere. Their ambiguous …

Renewal And Disposability: Projects And Narratives Of Development And Dispossession In The "New" New Orleans, Allison Padilla-Goodman Feb 2014

Renewal And Disposability: Projects And Narratives Of Development And Dispossession In The "New" New Orleans, Allison Padilla-Goodman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

When much of the physical landscape of New Orleans was destroyed with Hurricane Katrina, expedited change and a need to redefine the city's future rushed in. The "new" New Orleans would be decisively different: it would be change-oriented, optimistic, and a leader in progressive reform movements. Discourse around post-Katrina New Orleans was focused on making New Orleans "better than before" and becoming a national leader for cutting-edge urban renewal. On-the-ground change mirrored this discourse, as the city's institutional landscape was dismantled and reconfigured along lines of privatization and newness as the trend of "accumulation by dispossession" (Harvey, 2005) blanketed the …

Many countries, including Indonesia, have paid attention to support the development of creative industry. Economic sociologists and sociologits of art have done researches on dynamics of this industry for quite sometime. By employing concepts of Art World and institutional (social) networks, this study attempts to answer two important questions. Perjalanan Menjadi Cina Benteng: Studi Identitas Etnis Di Desa Situgadung, Muhammad Reza Zaini

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article argue that “Chinese-ness” is an achievable entity to a social group with indigenous cultural identity. Previous studies tend to define ethnic identity as a single and objective entity. This study offers a new understanding on ethnic identity. Identity is defined as a process to identify a certain collectivity in which an individual feels he/she belonged to, while ethnicity is one of the manifestations of collectivities. Thus, identity is a subjective process, where each individual plays a significant role in determining his/her collectivity as his/her alter-ego. While ethnicity is an objective process, in which the society determine an individual’s …

Uniting Men’S Work As Husbands And Fathers: How Men’S Marital Intimacy Influences Their Generative Development, Erin Kramer, Dr. Alan J. Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I conducted this qualitative analysis to better understand how men care for their wives, how this care influences men’s relationships with their wives, how this care may also influence men’s relationships with their children, and how this care influences men’s personal generative development. My research was written as an undergraduate honors thesis.

Keterwakilan Etnis Di Politik Nasional: Kasus Etnis Sunda Di Republik Indonesia, Iwan Gardono Sujatmiko

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The article aims to construct an analytical model to explain why the presence of Sundanese political leaders at the national level is relatively low despite that they are the second largest majority group in Indonesia. The model focuses on historical factor, social network, culture, as well as the role of local government and society. The historical factor is crucial as to describe the importance of Sundanese’s position with Bandung as its core in its sociopolitical relation with Jakarta. The social network explores the connectivity between Sundanese with the national network, while the cultural factor is essential in analyzing the effect …

Gerakan Sosial Dalam Aksi Penyelenggaraan Sekolah Untuk Anak Miskin, Abdi Rahmat

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article shows the importance of civil society in the implementation of a school for poor children that are seen in the context of the social structure and state policies. During this time, the implementation of the school for poor children—done by the civil society organization (CSO) in Indonesia—is often understood as a micro phenomenon regardless of the context of broader social structures. What they do in fact can not be separated from the context of the macro structure. To that end, the main argument of this paper using the framework of the concept of social movement that emphasizes the …

Dinamika Struktur-Agensi Dalam Perkembangan Industri Otomotif Indonesia, Ricardi S. Adnan

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The focus of this paper is the dynamic relationship in automobile industry between entrepreneur and the power in 1969-1998. The length of this study can be divided in three periods: seeking the industrial form, going to maturity, and realizing the industrial autonomous. Looking back to the Old Order and analyzing along three periods, this research has found that the structure transformed the interactions between actors—“the shifting patronage”. Giddens approach and theory of “structuration” is really clear in this industry and the model of this phenomenon is called as “symbiotic relationship”. It is different from Chalmers (1996) analyzed through economical-politics analysis, …

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost Jan 2014

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Music has been shown to trigger old memories and induce various levels of stress relief and relaxation. My research focused on the effects of music on subjects with Alzheimer and Dementia disease. Eleven patients were selected through an informed consent process which included permission from responsible family members. During the course of three or more visits to patients in their care centers, the subjects listened to a variety of songs. These included songs that family members thought would be personally meaningful based on their knowledge of the patient’s past experiences with music. Other popular songs were selected to represent a …

Dead Newspapers And Citizens’ Civic Engagement, Lee Shaker Jan 2014

Dead Newspapers And Citizens’ Civic Engagement, Lee Shaker

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using data from the 2008 and 2009 Current Population Survey conducted by the United States Census, this article assesses the year-over-year change in the civic engagement of citizens in America’s largest metropolitan areas. Of special interest are Denver and Seattle, where the Rocky Mountain News and Seattle Post-Intelligencer closed during the intervening year. The data from the CPS indicate that civic engagement in Seattle and Denver dropped significantly from 2008 to 2009 – a decline that is not consistently replicated over the same time period in other major American cities that did not lose a newspaper. The analysis suggests that …

It brings the urban poverty level to over 45 percent, positioning Ethiopia as the poorest or second poorest, least developed country in the world.

Understanding Sexual Abstinence Among Adolescent Males, David William Haas, Dr. Renata Forste Jan 2014

Understanding Sexual Abstinence Among Adolescent Males, David William Haas, Dr. Renata Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Adolescent sexual activity is an important social issue because it is associated with other high-risk behaviors such as alcohol and substance abuse. Past studies have generally examined factors related to the initiation of sexual activity among youth, rather than modeling the factors predictive of sexual abstinence. Early sexual activity places youth at risk of premarital pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. In addition, first intercourse is influential in redefining a youth’s identity and attitudes, and is an important factor in the transition from adolescence to adulthood (Upchurch, Levy-Storms, Sucoff, & Aneheshensel, 1998). The present study of teen sexual behavior models the …

The Buruli ulcer (BU), caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the leading endemic tropical diseases in West Africa (2). M. ulcerans, at the site of infection, forms a subcutaneous nodule. This nodule, unless immediately excised, leads to a progressive deteriorating cavity beneath the epidermis followed by the ulceration of the overlying skin (1).

Autism In Romanian Orphanages, Natalie Williams, Dr. John Seggar Jan 2014

Autism In Romanian Orphanages, Natalie Williams, Dr. John Seggar

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Orphans in developing countries raised in social institutions often manifest extreme developmental delays. Autism is a common layman diagnosis for such children due to the pattern of their developmental delays. Most orphans raised in such situations show severe delays in language skills, social interaction, and play behavior. All three of these delays are very characteristic of the Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, deeper investigation shows autism to be a more intricate and pervasive disorder.

Print Media Coverage Of The Arab/Israeli Conflict: An Arab Perspective, Kyler Kronmiller, Dr. Bruce Chadwick

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the fifty-three years since its birth, the state of Israel has been in perpetual conflict with its Arab neighbors. On this small piece of disputed land, too many peoples compete for too little space. Both Israelis and Arabs claim religious roots and heritage in the same small piece of real estate. The original United Nations boundaries between Israel and Palestine have been altered through a succession of wars, mainly in 1948, 1967, 1973, and two intifadas.

Initial Onset Of Depression During Adolescence: An Event History Analysis, Scott A. Baldwin, Dr. John P. Hoffmann

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Depression is a common ailment in the United States, affecting approximately 10% of men and 20% of women during their lifetimes.1 Moreover, there is evidence that among adolescents rates of depression have increased over the past two to three decades.2 Studies have identified parental depression as a potential risk factor for depression among adolescents.3 Indeed, a longitudinal study by Weismann and colleagues found that the offspring of depressed parents were at high risk for major depressive disorder and other psychopathology.4

Psychosocial Factors Related To Mexican Immigration And Subsequent Identity Formation, Mark Mills, Lynn England Jan 2014

Psychosocial Factors Related To Mexican Immigration And Subsequent Identity Formation, Mark Mills, Lynn England

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In my research proposal, I indicated that my research had three primary objectives: 1) discover the underlying psychosocial reasons for Mexican immigration and evaluate the push/pull theory of immigration (i.e. what factors, either psychological, economic, or social, push immigrants away from their native land, and what factors pull them towards the new land), 2) discover whether the expectations of Mexican immigrants are typically met, and 3) delineate the integration and identity formation process that immigrants go through upon entering a new culture. Each of these objectives will be evaluated and examined.

A Confession Of A Blonde Asian Girl, Michelle Lee Jan 2014

A Confession Of A Blonde Asian Girl, Michelle Lee

SURGE

I never realized I was an Asian.

Nor was I aware I was from South Korea.

The thought of identifying myself as Asian was redundant for I was, indeed, from Asia where Asian people lived. So when I no longer lived amongst “my own people,” I was immediately labeled, “Asian.” However, I wasn’t exactly excited about the new label. Not that I was in denial of my Asian heritage, but I didn’t comprehend people’s continuous need to point out the obvious. Yes, I am Asian, but you are only looking at a microscopic part of me. My ethnicity had no …

Project Vision: Youth Mentor Program, Brian Barber, Dr. Shawn Fletcher Dorius

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With an estimated one quarter of America’s youth between the ages of 10 and 17 exhibiting signs of high risk or dysfunctional behaviors, organizations aimed at intervention and positive socialization have flourished over the past decade. Research has shown that within these organizations a social environment approach such as the establishment of peer groups, role modeling, and pro-social behavior rehearsal are effective means of fostering lasting behavioral and attitudinal changes among troubled teens. Applying similar mentoring techniques within our own community, the needs of Provo’s at risk youth are being legitimized at Project Vision.

Parental Authoritativeness, Social Support And College Adjustment, Sarah Cusworth, Kelly Mccoy Jan 2014

Parental Authoritativeness, Social Support And College Adjustment, Sarah Cusworth, Kelly Mccoy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

College Adjustment A factor analysis (principal component analysis, Varimax rotation method) of the 28 college adjustment questions yielded eight factors. Five of these factors closely related to the five subsections in the adjustment measure. Because the questions hung together in the analysis it was assumed that the questionnaire was a good measure of the variables we were studying. The five subsections included peer relations, faculty relations, perception of faculty concern, academic/intellectual development, and institutional/goal commitments. The factor analysis provided some interesting insights to some interrcorrelations between scales.
