More Than Just Food: Analysis Of Food And Social Interactions, Kelsey Kazlauskas
More Than Just Food: Analysis Of Food And Social Interactions, Kelsey Kazlauskas
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This study examines gender differences in the social interactions of elementary school students during their lunchtime period. This pre-adolescent culture initiates gender role behaviors that reflect how future views on gender will grow. The role of social interaction between peers relates to the food choices made in the lunchroom. The data for this study was collected through observations that took place over the course of two months in an urban public elementary school in southeastern Massachusetts. Observations were collected to closely examine how students in elementary grades are intermixing by age and gender in an informal, school-based setting. The observational …
Prisons And Pups: An Examination Of Service Dog Training And Their Weekend Families, Kendra Garcia
Prisons And Pups: An Examination Of Service Dog Training And Their Weekend Families, Kendra Garcia
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The use of service dogs for people with disabilities has increased in the last few decades. The service dogs come in the form of companion dogs, socialization dogs, medical alert dogs, and dogs for the mobility and hearing impaired. Therapy dogs are also used in clinical settings to ease the tension in hospital, and school settings. Since their use has increased, so has the demand. Training of service dogs can take anywhere from 12-18 months and can cost upwards of $20,000. Organizations have become creative in meeting the needs of their clients and turned to recruiting incarcerated persons in correctional …

College Students’ Attitudes Towards Adults With Developmental Disabilities: Does Direct Contact Make A Difference?, Caroline E. Greene
Honors College Theses
Data were collected from thirty college students who participated in an alternative break trip and approximately seventy college students who did not attend the trip. Study subjects served as counselors at a camp for adults with developmental disabilities. Data were collected using five measures: a) before the week started, students filled out a survey which questioned their comfort level and attitude when interacting with this population; b) this same survey was administered to a random sample of college students who did not attend the break trip c) at camp, students kept a journal throughout the week documenting their experiences; d) …

A Methodological Framework For Projecting Brand Equity: Putting Back The Imaginary Into Brand Knowledge Structures, George Rossolatos
A Methodological Framework For Projecting Brand Equity: Putting Back The Imaginary Into Brand Knowledge Structures, George Rossolatos
The Qualitative Report
The aim of this paper is to outline a methodological framework for Brand Equity planning with structuralist rhetorical semiotics. By drawing on the connectionist conceptual model of the brand generative trajectory of signification (Rossolatos 2013a, 2013g) it will be displayed in a step-wise fashion how a set of nuclear semes and classemes or an intended semic structure that underlies manifest discursive structures may be projected by its internal stakeholders (i.e., a brand management team, an account planning team or a marketing research team) with view to attaining differential brand associations. The suggested methodological framework focuses on the strength and uniqueness …
A Conversation Between Kip Jones And Patricia Leavy: Arts-Based Research, Performative Social Science And Working On The Margins, Kip Jones, Patricia Leavy
A Conversation Between Kip Jones And Patricia Leavy: Arts-Based Research, Performative Social Science And Working On The Margins, Kip Jones, Patricia Leavy
The Qualitative Report
This paper reports a conversation between international pioneers in ArtsBased Research and Performative Social Science, Patricia Leavy and Kip Jones. They begin by delineating the differences between research and/or dissemination that use tools from the Arts in their production. Leavy turns to her fiction writing as an example, while Jones discusses the making of his research-based short film, Rufus Stone. The conversation then turns to how these novel approaches have changed the way in which they work and these efforts in relation to the academy. The concept of “audience” is raised. Both then give examples of taking alternative routes in …
Experiences Of Therapists And Occupational Therapy Students Using Video Conferencing In Conduction Of Focus Groups, Theresa Marie Smith
Experiences Of Therapists And Occupational Therapy Students Using Video Conferencing In Conduction Of Focus Groups, Theresa Marie Smith
The Qualitative Report
A paucity of literature exists on how to conduct an online focus group. The purpose of this study is to describe and learn from participants’ experiences in using virtual technology in a focus group conducted to refine a low vision assessment. Ten low vision therapists and five master’s level students participated. Two cycles of data collection and analysis occurred, one for focus group transcripts of therapists and another for student replies to a questionnaire. A case-by-case matrix was created and data sorted into three categories including: (1) benefits to using the technology; (2) challenges to using the technology; and (3) …
The Effects Of Extracurricular Activity On Children And Adolescents: Hosting A Tennis Camp For Children In The Foster Care System, Lauren Armstrong
The Effects Of Extracurricular Activity On Children And Adolescents: Hosting A Tennis Camp For Children In The Foster Care System, Lauren Armstrong
Senior Theses
In recent years, many studies have been conducted regarding the positive effects of extracurricular activities on the behaviors, actions, and overall well-being of children and adolescents. Whether it is through sports, hobbies, or activities within the community, it is important for all children to be able to have access to and be involved in some kind of extracurricular activities. Participation in activities such as these instills in children the qualities essential for life long success including good work ethic, time management skills, the ability to work in groups, commitment, and focus all while guiding them along the right path as …

Does Being An Only Child Affect The Attitudes Of Chinese Students?, Yuwei Wei
Senior Theses
Three decades has passed since China started implementing regulations and policies for population control. Today, the ever-famous “One-Child Policy” is starting to not only lose its popularity, but also its effectiveness in spurring economic growth. This paper will discuss the heavy social cost the last generation had to pay for the growth of economy and the slowing down of population growth, as well as the challenges in social adaptation young adults face today. As part of the literature review, this paper examines the issue of the “Upside down pyramid” and analyzes the family planning policy’s impact on China’s demography. The …

To Hell... And Back? An Examination Feminism And Its Consequences, Kaylee Mahaffey
Senior Theses
The goal of this thesis is to give an in depth analysis of the feminist movement and the effects it has had on society and the family unit. The first portion of the thesis will be allotted to a historical account of the feminist movement and the various feminist theories that it spawned throughout the three waves of the movement. After the account of the movement itself, a description of the four categories of feminist ideologies will be explained and mildly critiqued. Once the historical stage has been set, a thorough criticism feminism will be performed and particular emphasis will …
Mental Environmentalism: The True Goal Of The Occupy Wall Street Movement, Jay Menees
Mental Environmentalism: The True Goal Of The Occupy Wall Street Movement, Jay Menees
Senior Theses
The purpose of this paper is to expose the actual goal behind the Occupy Wall Street Movement. The paper discusses the criticism behind the Occupy Wall Street movement for its apparent lack of goals. It then takes a retrospective look back to the establishment and founding organization, Adbusters, for answers on a “one demand” or goal. From here it will discuss the founding body, Adbusters, and its philosophical and political ideology. After this, the paper will tie facets of the Occupy Wall Street movement back to Adbusters and their philosophy of mental environmentalism in order to show that mental environmentalism …

Crime In Game Theoretic Models: An Exploration Of The Rational Criminal In A Variety Of Frameworks, Benjamin A. Chalmers
Crime In Game Theoretic Models: An Exploration Of The Rational Criminal In A Variety Of Frameworks, Benjamin A. Chalmers
Student Scholarship
There is as much contention over the cause of crime as there is about how to solve it, and the two issues are inextricable from one another. While the idea of studying such a deeply social and humanistic issue through the ‘cold lens’ of mathematics may seem unorthodox or even unproductive to the layperson, the practice has become commonplace since Gary Becker’s introduction of the ‘rational criminal’ model in his paper Crime and Punishment: An Economic Approach in 1968. The rational criminal model is a method of explaining the actions of a criminal not by attributing them to an inherent …
Correlates Of Gang Involvement And Health-Related Factors Among African American Females With A Detention History, Dexter R. Voisin
Correlates Of Gang Involvement And Health-Related Factors Among African American Females With A Detention History, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Prior studies have assessed relationships between gang membership and health-related factors. However, the existing literature has largely failed to consider how individual and broader social contextual factors might be related to such gang involvement among African American females. Thus, the aim of the present study was to identify empirically driven correlates of gang involvement and then better understand the relationship between gang membership and health-related behaviors for African American females, after controlling for covariates of gang involvement. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of detained African American adolescents females, between the ages of 13-17, currently incarcerated in …
Women’S Empowerment And Community-Driven Development: Evidence From The Solomon Islands, Erin M. Steffen
Women’S Empowerment And Community-Driven Development: Evidence From The Solomon Islands, Erin M. Steffen
Master's Theses
The study evaluates the impact to-date of a community-driven development (CDD) program on women’s empowerment in the Solomon Islands. Originally launched in 2008, the CDD program is known as the Rural Development Program (RDP). The RDP aims to foster employment and income growth by focusing on participatory development, demand-responsive provisions of government services, and the creation of a supportive economic environment for small-scale rural development. The RDP process mandates female involvement, which manifests predominately in the selection of community infrastructure projects and by participation in a RDP subcommittee known as the Sub-Implementation Committee (SIC). Members of the SIC are in …

Research Brief: "Financial Well-Being And Post-Deployment Adjustment Among Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study highlights the financial struggles faced by readjusting service-people, particularly for those with poor mental health. However, it has been found that readjusting and money management has a decidedly negative correlation. The outcome of the study includes providing financial literacy information, as well as promoting "meaningful employment" to combat financial issues for returning veterans. This brief recommends that future research should focus on long term effects of these issues, as well as future studies with additional outlying challenges factored in to their relationship with financial issues.

Exploring The Factors That Influence And Motivate Female Students To Enroll And Persist In Collegiate Stem Degree Programs: A Mixed Methods Study, Rosemary L. Edzie
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nationally, the need for an increase in interest, enrollment, and degrees awarded from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs continues to suffer. While students are enrolling in collegiate STEM degree programs, it is not occurring at a rate that meets the workforce demand. In addition to the concern that there is not a sufficient amount of collegiate STEM majors, there is a concern over too few females enrolling and persisting in collegiate STEM degree programs.
This mixed methods sequential exploratory research study considered the factors that influence and motivate undergraduate female students to enroll and persist in collegiate …
Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson
Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines whether there is a relationship between social capital and participation in academic service-learning courses within higher education. Through designing, implementing, and analyzing a survey which was given to students enrolled in courses with an academic service-learning component at Eastern Michigan University (n=127), the role between these two variables was tested. Social capital was measured through the total number of relationships formed at participants’ academic service learning site, whether these relationships were strong or weak ties; the frequency of interaction with said ties; and individuals who could be used as a reference. Results suggest the number of individuals …

South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
Religious Studies Honors Projects
Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) ensures equal access care to all British residents. Health outcomes, nonetheless, vary across socioeconomic class, education level, and geographic location, a phenomenon particularly affecting Britain’s South Asian Muslim communities. This paper will contextualize the NHS within the British national imaginary and analyze discursive, social, and economic variables influencing Pakistani and Bangladeshi poor health. I will integrate religious-based analysis into healthcare studies and question if health outcomes act as a marker of distinction between minority and majority populations. Though Muslim organizations, the NHS, the Department of Health, and government multicultural policies hope to reverse health disparities, …
How Does A Believer Become Evangelical?: Using Habitus To Track The Transfer Of Religious Meaning Across Social Contexts, Ethan W. Johnson
How Does A Believer Become Evangelical?: Using Habitus To Track The Transfer Of Religious Meaning Across Social Contexts, Ethan W. Johnson
Sociology Honors Projects
Recent research on religion’s influence on civic life in the United States has focused predominantly on either studying the civic consequences of the rise of Evangelical Protestantism or focused on religion’s ability to promote civic engagement and social capital generally. These two lines of study run the risk of assuming the salience of particular theological beliefs across social contexts while also neglecting an attempt to understand how religious communities and belief can promote explicitly religious civic orientations. I build on Bourdieu’s concept of habitus to propose a theoretical remedy for these shortcomings in the research. Using original survey data collected …
Mexican Identity Beyond Labels, Beyond Borders, Jessica Muñoz
Mexican Identity Beyond Labels, Beyond Borders, Jessica Muñoz
Sociology Honors Projects
According to the U.S. census, "Mexican" is labeled as an ethnic or national identity, not a racial identity. To understand more about the meaning and experience behind Mexican identity, I conducted 13 interviews with people who self-identify as Mexican. I found a disconnect between how people self-identify and how they situate themselves within categories that differ from their understandings of race. People described what it means to be Mexican through culture and shared peoplehood regardless of country of origin. They shared experiences being racialized in the U.S., but did not have a similar pattern in defining what race or ethnicity …

Transnational Narratives: Interpretation And Appropriation Of Black Identity By West African Immigrants, Mbemba Camara
Sociology Honors Projects
African immigrants confront existing racial divisions, and their family's place within those divisions, during their transition into American society. Interviews with three Guinean and three Liberian immigrants reveal that when constructing their identity, Guinean parents reject Black American identity to reinforce African heritage in their children (partial adoption of the racialized lens) while Liberian parents align their families with Black American identity and African identity (complete adoption of the racialized lens). The findings demonstrate that while these West African parents align with the racial ideology that will lead to their American dream, some Liberian parents look beyond racial stigma to …

Immigration To Manchester, New Hampshire, Sally Ward, Justin R. Young, Curt D. Grimm
Carsey Publications
This brief analyzes immigration and refugee resettlement in Manchester and the effects on the city’s demographic composition, as well as the implications for its future. Authors Sally Ward, Justin Young, and Curt Grimm report that Manchester, New Hampshire, like the nation, is experiencing a new wave of immigration. In the past, most of the city’s immigrants tended to come from Canada and Europe. Today, they are most likely from Latin America, followed by Asia and, to a lesser extent, Africa. The rate of refugee placement in Manchester has remained relatively steady since the 1990s. Of all refugees who arrived in …

Friend: “Are you going to the Gender Bender Dance?”
Me: “I think so. I probably won’t dress up though; I figure I already bend gender enough every day.”
Friend: “What do you mean? Like you’re not feminine?”
Me: “Yeah!”
Friend: “No, Chelsea! Of course you are!”
Wait, what? I understand that this person meant no harm; if anything, my friend probably interpreted my remark as a self-deprecating comment uttered with the hopes that someone would reassure my femininity. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Improv To Improve Interprofessional Communication, Team Building, Patient Safety, And Patient Satisfaction, Candace A. Campbell
Improv To Improve Interprofessional Communication, Team Building, Patient Safety, And Patient Satisfaction, Candace A. Campbell
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The purpose of this process improvement project was to implement a test of change within a healthcare team utilizing applied improvisational exercises (AIEs), and to lay the groundwork for more effective inter- and intra-professional communication.
Literature review: AIEs have been shown to facilitate individual participant communication strengths through a process of un-learning certain common behavioral habits, and learning new habits that assist in creating and expanding closed-loop communication. Such un-learning and learning enriches the participant’s awareness of the environment and encourages participant adaptability through positive group interactions.
Method: An all-day AIE seminar/workshop was conducted with members of two healthcare teams …

Does Size Matter In The Field?: Female Police Bodies In Online Television, Carmen M. Cusack
Does Size Matter In The Field?: Female Police Bodies In Online Television, Carmen M. Cusack
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study is to investigate how female officers’ body sizes are depicted on the TV show, “Police Women of Broward County.” Little literature examines the media’s depiction of bodies belonging to women who are involved in traditionally masculine professions. However, feminist and masculinist literature, along with biophysical literature, tends to suggest that women are smaller and weaker than men or are perceived that way in society. It stands to reason that media may portray female officers this way or portray women attempting to overcome this stigma personally and professionally to appeal to viewers or as a reflection …

Demands And Rewards Of Working Within Multidisciplinary Teams In Pediatric Oncology: The Experiences Of Canadian Health Care Providers, Sonia Gulati, David Dix, Anne Klassen
The Qualitative Report
Pediatric oncology care in Canada is delivered by multidisciplinary teams consisting of healthcare providers with different areas of expertise. Limited information is available on how the multidisciplinary team influences jobrelated rewards, demands, and stress in pediatric oncology. A qualitative approach was adopted to learn about healthcare providers’ experiences of working within a multidisciplinary team in pediatric oncology. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 33 healthcare providers (13 oncologists, 9 nurses, 5 social workers, and 6 child-life specialists) from four pediatric oncology centres. Topics explored included: demands and rewards associated with how the multidisciplinary team worked; description of one’s area of expertise; …
Textbook Considerations For An Mft Qualitative Research Phd Course: The Relevance Of Harding'squalitative Data Analysis From Start To Finish, Eric Dishongh
The Qualitative Report
Jamie Harding’s (2013) Qualitative Data Analysis from Start to Finish is a new, user-friendly book for beginning qualitative research students. The thrust of the book deals with analyzing qualitative data from interviews and focus groups. This reviewer considers the relevance of Harding’s book for a Qualitative Research course in an MFT doctoral program.
