Lessons Learned From Training Of Promotores De Salud For Obesity And Diabetes Prevention, Erica T. Sosa, Lesli Biediger-Friedman, Zenong Yin
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Promotores de Salud are impactful in reducing health disparities for Hispanic communities. The purpose of this paper is to present the training process and fidelity of study protocol implementation using a promotora model for community-based diabetes prevention.
Methods: Five Hispanic bilingual promotores were recruited from a Community Health Worker program and received intensive 30-hour promotora training on how to recruit participants, lead group sessions, and support participants making behavior changes. Evaluation of the training included a survey and focus group to assess promotores’ feedback, a post-training knowledge test to assess knowledge acquired during the training and an observational assessment …
America’S New Demography: Rising Minorities, Aging Boomers, And Emerging Cultural Gaps, William H. Frey
America’S New Demography: Rising Minorities, Aging Boomers, And Emerging Cultural Gaps, William H. Frey
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
There are major demographic changes occurring in the United States right now. As the number of whites is declining among children and in many communities, we are seeing growth in other racial groups, particularly the Hispanic population. In fact, estimates are that by 2043 the United States will be “majority-minority." The Brookings Institution’s William Frey will discuss how these population shifts will impact different different parts of the country, their politics, and related policies. He will explore how the changes will continue to affect Americans for decades to come.

“You can’t check a box between male and female; you are either a boy or a girl.”
My professor makes this statement often. It is pretty easy to see why he would use gender in this example: he is trying to give us a simple, understandable explanation of a binary. When explaining the binary, he just wants to show that it is a two-option classification: from his experience, male and female fits. [excerpt]

On April 22, community and sector leaders joined for Global Budgets, Payment Reform, and Single Payer: Understanding Vermont's Health Reform. Participants discussed Vermont's recent movie toward single payer health …
Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner
Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner
Senior Honors Theses
Due to the rise of globalization, modernization, and the Internet revolution, awareness of global poverty has expanded, making its eradication a chief goal of the global development community for the twenty-first century. Though corporations are often expected to participate in social and community development initiatives without regard for profits, this paper presents inclusive business as a way for businesses to profitably engage impoverished segments of society. Inclusive businesses seek to expand their consumer bases or strengthen their supply chains by moving into new markets among the poor that have limited access to global markets and remain largely untapped. The research …
A Phenomenological Examination Of Context On Adolescent Ownership And Engagement Rationale, Melissa Cater, Krisanna Machtmes, Janet E. Fox
A Phenomenological Examination Of Context On Adolescent Ownership And Engagement Rationale, Melissa Cater, Krisanna Machtmes, Janet E. Fox
The Qualitative Report
Youth ownership and engagement are foundational pieces of the service - learning cycle. Youth voice is posited as a promising practice for building engagement and ownership. As community programs search for proven methods of sustaining youth participation, research that examines the links between practice and outcomes is essential. This study is a phenomenological examination of how adolescents in a non - formal youth development program make meaning of having a voice and its contributions to their ownership and engagement of the program. Findings indicate that an autonomy - supportive environment is a prerequisite for engagement and ownership to develop.

Conversations In A Pub: Positioning The Critical Friend As “Peer Relief” In The Supervision Of A Teacher Educator Study Abroad Experience, Jenifer Jasinski Schneider, Audra K. Parker
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we share the results of a self - study of our experience as university supervisors in a study abroad program for U.S. pre - service teachers. We share the shifts in our thinking that occurred as a result of our daily conversations about our work as teacher educators. Our reflections led us to new understandings of the nuances of field experiences, our constructions of pre - service teachers in the field, and the necessity of personal and professional renewal for faculty, not only as critical friends, but as peer relief.

How To “Get” Grounded And Not “Get” Lost: Review Of Grounded Theory For Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide, Kristin Wyatt
The Qualitative Report
As a developing PhD student one must work to develop the ability to apply critical thinking skills and analysis. In my pursuit to further understand qualitative research methods, I chose to look more closely at grounded theory method due to its seemingly complex structure and unique method of theory development. Urquhart (2013) works to present the components of grounded theory method (GTM) as a reaction to confusion and frustration of postgraduate students struggling with the method. She provides a sequential “how to” guide on GTM while asserting the importance of staying flexible within the structure. She acknowledges and addresses the …
Risking It: An Examination Of Risk Perception Amongst Obstetricians And Certified Professional Midwives In Missouri, Allison R. Horan
Risking It: An Examination Of Risk Perception Amongst Obstetricians And Certified Professional Midwives In Missouri, Allison R. Horan
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
The concept of risk is pervasive in contemporary discussions of childbirth –both amongst professionals and consumers. While risk is often presented as an objective entity, in reality it is an elusive concept to define, particularly within the context of maternity care. Since the nineteenth century, obstetricians and midwives have conceptualized the risks of birth differently. This thesis examines how two groups of practitioners in Missouri, obstetricians (OBs) and certified professional midwives (CPMs), perceive risk in pregnancy and childbirth. By combining archival investigation techniques with original qualitative research, I hope to demonstrate that risk in maternity care is far from a …

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: Understanding The Daily Life Of Undocumented High School Youth, Sylvia Rusin, Meghan Burke, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
The 1.5 generation are the undocumented students who were born abroad and were brought to the United States by their parents at an early age. Many of these children came here during the population boom in the 1990’s and are now teenagers or in their mid 20’s. As they are finishing high school, nearly all of them are confused about their post-secondary options because of their undocumented status. The IL Dream Act, passed in 2011, qualifies undocumented youth to pay in-state tuition when attending public universities in Illinois and provides counselors who are aware of the college options and post-secondary …

Does Child Sponsorship Have A Positive Impact On The Quality Of Life And Social Behavior Of Sponsored Children? Evidence From Indonesia, Mario Carrillo
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
Relaxing internal constraints of individuals at early stages of life is an approach that complements traditional policy interventions aimed to alleviate poverty. The Compassion International child sponsorship program focuses their work on the emotional, social, and spiritual development of sponsored children. This study uses age-eligibility as an instrument for sponsorship to investigate the impacts of child sponsorship on self-esteem, aspirational reference points, aspirational capital, reciprocity and patience. It also implements an innovative way of constructing summary indices using a method proposed by Anderson, M (2008). Results reveal child sponsorship does not have an effect on the sponsored children. In fact, …
Closing The Gap: Defining The Determinants Of School Dropout In Rural Mexico, Ashley Dymock, Dr. Tim Heaton
Closing The Gap: Defining The Determinants Of School Dropout In Rural Mexico, Ashley Dymock, Dr. Tim Heaton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research examined the motives behind school dropouts occurring between primary and secondary schools in Guanajuato, Mexico. It involved both preliminary quantitative analysis as well as field research that was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. I am currently in the process of evaluating the data collected in Mexico from April to July of 2012 to provide a local non-governmental organization (NGO) with solutions to help reduce this rural educational gap. I report the status of my findings to the NGO on a regular basis and will submit a final report within the next two months.
Long-Term Recidivism Of A Short Term Jail Substance Abuse Program, Leslie Cooper Terry, Dr. Stephen Bahr
Long-Term Recidivism Of A Short Term Jail Substance Abuse Program, Leslie Cooper Terry, Dr. Stephen Bahr
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This research was a follow-up of previous research done by Dr. Stephen Bahr, looking at recidivism rates of offenders who had been through a jail substance abuse program in 2006. The research took place at a county jail in the intermountain United States. Dr. Bahr did follow-up interviews and looked up whether or not they went back to jail or prison for more than 30 days. My hypothesis was expanded to include not only recidivism, but also to examine whether or not they relapsed. Since we were not able to interview many respondents, we measured relapse by if they had …

Attitudes About Educating Girls And Internet Use In Southeast Asia, Hayley Heath, Dr. Renata Forste
Attitudes About Educating Girls And Internet Use In Southeast Asia, Hayley Heath, Dr. Renata Forste
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Based on survey data from seven countries in Southeast Asia, I examined the association between internet use and attitudes about the importance of educating girls. The sample is of 6,604 adults. Using logistic regression techniques, I found that the data supported my hypothesis; internet use is associated with respondent’s agreement that education is not more important for boys than for girls. This relationship is found even after controlling for respondent gender, education, and country.

Positional Segregation In Sport: How Rugby Introduces New Ethnicities To Research, Dylan Lubbe, Dr. Mikaela Dufur
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Modern scientists continue to argue over an issue that has existed since the first time a person realized that his or her skin was a slightly different shade or tint than someone else’s: Does skin color serve as an indicator for something deeper? The conversation about racial stereotypes has changed over time, shifting away from the possible truths behind them towards the social reality created by those who continue to believe in. Racial stereotypes have become an unconscious part of the metanarrative of modern society; almost anyone can list them. Those of African descent are considered to have a lower …

The Remittance Intentions Of Second-Generation Ghanaian-Americans, Kirstie Kwarteng
Capstone Collection
Remittances have become an integral part of economies all over the Global South and Ghana is no exception. Official accounts estimate that remittances to Ghana have been as high as US $1 billion a year, although the true number is likely to be much higher as funds are also remitted through informal channels. This is a significant inflow of foreign currency, sent almost completely by first generation Ghanaian immigrants abroad. To maintain this level of inflows over the long run, however, would require that second-generation Ghanaian immigrants continue to remit at the same level as their parents. This study examines …

“You’re going to need to buy nicer clothes,” my dad told me during our first visit to Gettysburg College. I laughed, thinking it was a typical “dad” thing to say and something I would promptly ignore, but after four years I now see that maybe he wasn’t joking.

Attitudes Toward Science (Ats): An Examination Of Scientists' And Native Americans' Cultural Values And Ats And Their Effect On Action Priorities, Adam T. Murry
Dissertations and Theses
Science has been identified as a crucial element in the competitiveness and sustainability of America in the global economy. American citizens, especially minority populations, however, are not pursuing science education or careers. Past research has implicated `attitudes toward science' as an important factor in the public's participation in science. I applied Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior to attitudes toward science to predict science-related sustainability-action intentions and evaluated whether scientists and Native Americans differed in their general attitudes toward science, cultural values, and specific beliefs about science. Analyses revealed that positive attitude toward science and the cultural value of individualism …
Female Career Progression & Maternity Leave: An Irish Exploration, Collette O'Connor, Angela Wright
Female Career Progression & Maternity Leave: An Irish Exploration, Collette O'Connor, Angela Wright
Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications
The persistent existence of the 'gender pay gap' in organisations, and the lack of females at executive level position in Ireland due to motherhood is the context for this paper. In particular, this study seeks to investigate why women's careers are impacted by childbearing. The study investigates if there is a correlation between taking maternity leave, and women's career progression in the work place. The increasing length of maternity leave benefits and flexible work arrangements results in elongated absence of females from the workplace. This leads to stereotypical role emergence by both men and women. Women take on the main …

Gender Differences In Frontal Plane Lower Extremity Kinetic Variability During Landing, Andrew Nordin
Gender Differences In Frontal Plane Lower Extremity Kinetic Variability During Landing, Andrew Nordin
Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
Investigations of human movement variability have been used as a
means of exploring neuromotor functioning, where performance variability is
thought to provide the system with flexibility and a mechanism for adaptation to
movement repetition [1,2,4,6]. Operationally, variability has been considered to
fall within optimal limits (Figure 1), while excessively high or low variability has
been implicated in injury susceptibility [1,2,4,6]. Landing has been explored
due to a high incidence of injury in athletic performance, as well as the ability
to easily control task demands through increases in landing height [3,4].
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate changes in …

Filipino Americans are the 2nd largest Asian subgroup in the United States and their leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite this, little is known about their prevalence of CVD risk factors. This study revealed that many Filipino Americans living in Clark County, Nevada are at risk of heart disease because of the presence of CVD risk factors. Intensive lifestyle modification and treatment are recommended to help decrease the prevalence of heart disease in this group and improve their overall health outcomes. Nurses and nurse practitioners are in excellent position to educate their Filipino American clients regarding heart …

Motor vehicle crashes caused the majority fatalities to police officers in the U. S. for more than a decade, yet little is known about factors contributing to injury crashes. This research project required original data collection. A national survey of police chiefs in state, county, and local agencies of all sizes was conducted online in June and July, 2012. Questions focused on various driving policies and practices, including those related to communication technology commonly used in police patrol vehicles. Other questions included hypothetical situations to explore the culture of driving safety in individual police organizations. The majority of chiefs clearly …
