Don't Worry....Be Happy: The Influence Of Parental Anxiety On Adolescent Self-Esteem, Holly Olson Coutts
Don't Worry....Be Happy: The Influence Of Parental Anxiety On Adolescent Self-Esteem, Holly Olson Coutts
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to explore the direct and indirect influences of both paternal and maternal anxiety on adolescent self-esteem as mediated by parental criticism and autonomy allowance. Participants included 331 parent-child triads with a child between the ages of 12 and 15 from the Flourishing Families Project. Findings suggested that maternal anxiety had a significant negative influence on adolescent self-esteem while paternal anxiety did not. Also, the influence of maternal anxiety on adolescent self-esteem was carried directly rather than indirectly through autonomy allowance and parental criticism; however, this influence was only significant prior to adolescent gender …
Intersectionality Of Ethno-Cultural Identities And Construal Of Distant Suffering Outgroups, Marek Palasinski, Jackie Abell, Mark Levine
Intersectionality Of Ethno-Cultural Identities And Construal Of Distant Suffering Outgroups, Marek Palasinski, Jackie Abell, Mark Levine
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we explore how white Catholic men talk about the indirect dilemma of non-intervention for black ethnic outgroups. We illustrate how they mobilise global categorisation (all humanity) and use various forms of denial to deal with their non-involvement. Having analyzed representative fragments of their prejudice avoidance talk, we conclude with some observation about the strategic deployment of categories and denial forms as part of identity management talk. In contrast to quantitative research that oversimplifies the ingroup-outgroup distinction, we show how the status and outgroupness levels of the needy appear to be both flexible and intricate, which depends on …
Being A Korean Studying Koreans In An American School: Reflections On Culture, Power, And Ideology, Minjung Lim
Being A Korean Studying Koreans In An American School: Reflections On Culture, Power, And Ideology, Minjung Lim
The Qualitative Report
Recent debates on situated knowledge highlight the issue of the researcher’s position in the research process, challenging the traditional assumption of the insider/outsider dichotomy. Drawing on my fieldwork among Korean immigrant parents in an American school, I describe my shifting positions in negotiation and scrutinize the ways my reflexivity intersects with culture, power relations, and political ideologies in the research process. This self-analysis highlights partial and situated knowledge claims, questioning the author’s value-neutral, authoritative voice in texts. I argue that the researcher should critically reflect on her location in the field and articulate how this position influences the research.

A Rose By Any Other Name: State Criminality And The Limits Of Social Learning Theory, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw
A Rose By Any Other Name: State Criminality And The Limits Of Social Learning Theory, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw
The Hilltop Review
Over the past thirty years, social learning theory has emerged as one of the top criminological theories of the time. Capitalizing on Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory, social learning theory provided the means for a quantitative assessment of Sutherland’s propositions. Advanced largely by Ronald Akers, the vast majority of research conducted on social learning theory has been limited to self-report studies of adolescents and college students, largely due to convenience. The limitations of the methods developed to empirically test social learning theory combined with the difficulty of gaining access to people in positions of power, has been the primary impediment …

Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
This brief examines rural demographic trends in the first decade of the twenty-first century using newly available data from the 2010 Census. The rural population grew by just 2.2 million between 2000 and 2010—a gain barely half as great as that during the 1990s. Population growth was particularly slow in farming and mining counties and sharply reduced in rural manufacturing counties. Rural population gains were largest in high-amenity counties and just beyond the metropolitan fringe. Diversity accelerated in rural America, with racial and ethnic minorities accounting for 83 percent of rural population growth between 2000 and 2010.
Clarifying My World: Identity Work In The Context Of Workplace Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz, Ernesto Noronha
Clarifying My World: Identity Work In The Context Of Workplace Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz, Ernesto Noronha
The Qualitative Report
Based on a study rooted in van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenology, conducted with agents working in international facing call centers in Mumbai and Bangalore, India, this paper describes targets’ identity work in the context of workplace bullying. Data were gathered through conversational interviews and were subject to sententious and selective thematic analyses. The core theme of “clarifying my world” captures participants’ attempt to reconstruct their identity following the emergence of identity disruptions stemming from the experience of being bullied. Major themes which include building personal security and insulation, recreating equilibrium, maintaining dignity and poise, re-establishing ontological foundations and seeking continuity in …

Online Gaming Issues In Offline Couple Relationships: A Primer For Marriage And Family Therapists (Mfts), Katherine M. Hertlein, Blendine P. Hawkins
The Qualitative Report
Although the challenges around participation in online gaming grow, gamers and their partners who experience online relationship issues related to gaming, present a new set of treatment challenges for therapists. In this article, we report on the findings of a hermeneutic research study aimed at evaluating the scholarly literature related to online gaming and interpret these texts to determine the effect such online activity has on the couple relationship. We reviewed 18 articles published between 1998 and 2010 related to online gaming and interpersonal relationships, focusing solely on empirical articles related to the search criteria. Our interpretation of the text …

Lack Of Protections For Home Care Workers: Overtime Pay And Minimum Wage, Kristin Smith
Carsey Publications
This brief examines overtime hours and hourly wages among home care workers (home health aides and personal care aides) and compares them with hospital and nursing home aides. These aides engage in similar work for their clients, even though they work in different institutional settings. Yet, home health aides and personal care aides have higher poverty rates (20 percent and 28 percent, respectively) than hospital aides and nursing home aides (about 12 percent for both). In addition, they typically work fewer hours per week, have lower rates of health insurance coverage, rely on public assistance to a greater extent, and …

Knowledge And Financial Management In Households: An Examination Of Married Women’S Perspectives In Chadbourn, North Carolina, Hmoud Fanash Al Surikhi
Capstone Collection
This paper attempts to explore women’s perceptions about married women’s involvement in household financial decision-making in Chadbourn, North Carolina. The purpose of this research paper is to acquire knowledge and insights about women’s role in their families, in particular the husband-wife relationship with respect to financial decisions within households. Since the research’s purpose is to examine the relationship between women’s knowledge represented by level of education, and what role knowledge plays in the financial decision process in households, I have chosen interviewees with different levels of education.
During the interviews, women spoke honestly about their situations and what challenges they …

Research Brief: "Bmi Trajectory Groups In Veterans Of The Iraq And Afghanistan Wars", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about obesity rates among OEF/OIF veterans and how race, education level, gender, and use of the VA play a role in obesity rates. For practice and policy, a fitness education program should be implemented by the VA to help lower obesity rates since obesity can cause more serious health problems. Suggestions for future research include expanding the study to involve veterans from other military eras and expanding the study to look at more risks associated with obesity.

Lithium Treatment Of Appswdi/Nos2−/− Mice Leads To Reduced Hyperphosphorylated Tau, Increased Amyloid Deposition And Altered Inflammatory Phenotype, Tiffany L. Sudduth, Joan G. Wilson, Angela Everhart, Carol A. Colton, Donna M. Wilcock
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Lithium is an anti-psychotic that has been shown to prevent the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein through the inhibition of glycogen-synthase kinase 3-beta (GSK3β). We recently developed a mouse model that progresses from amyloid pathology to tau pathology and neurodegeneration due to the genetic deletion of NOS2 in an APP transgenic mouse; the APPSwDI/NOS2-/- mouse. Because this mouse develops tau pathology, amyloid pathology and neuronal loss we were interested in the effect anti-tau therapy would have on amyloid pathology, learning and memory. We administered lithium in the diets of APPSwDI/NOS2-/- mice for a period of eight months, followed by water maze …

The authors of this brief conduct the first comparative analysis of the polar questions that were part of the National Opinion Research Center's 2006 and 2010 General Social Survey. Developed by scientists at the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs, these questions covered topics such as climate change, melting ice and rising sea levels, and species extinction. The authors report that the public's knowledge about the north and south polar regions significantly improved between 2006 and 2010--before and after the International Polar Year. In addition, respondents who know more about science in general, and polar facts specifically, tend to …

The Mother-Love Myth: The Effect Of The Provider-Nurturer Dichotomy In Custody Cases, Kalie Caetano
The Mother-Love Myth: The Effect Of The Provider-Nurturer Dichotomy In Custody Cases, Kalie Caetano
The Macalester Review
This paper is a discursive analysis that evaluates the effect of gender stereotypes relating to parenting roles and how they have influenced custody cases. Specifically it looks at the historically gendered distinction between the provider (typically the father) and the nurturer (typically the mother) and speculates as to how those identities may have initially formed in US society, what changes they have undergone and how these stereotypes still affect family court outcomes in cases of divorce. Particular focus is given to an article appearing in Working Mother magazine entitled “Custody Lost,” detailing a new trend in custody cases, which allegedly …

Agency, Structures And Peru: Action And In-Action During 1980-2000, Kimberly A. Protzel
Master's Theses
The Shining Path along with Alberto Fujimori's presidency in Peru (encompassing the years 1980-2000) created a terrifying chaos that was wound up in both state and insurgent terrorism, corruption, and massacres. While this chaos is inextricably linked to Peru's history, I fear is being all too quickly forgotten. My main motivation behind this research has been to take a step towards increasing awareness of these events and the many reasons behind them: the agenic nature of some versus the lack of it in others, structures developed by colonialism, and most terrifyingly of all - willful ignorance. By understanding these reasons, …

New England Genetics Collaborative Results Of The Stakeholder Survey For Project Year Four, Peter Antal
Institute on Disability
Stakeholder feedback offers a range of critical and helpful insights into the potential next steps for the collaborative as it carriers on activities for Project Year Five and plans for a new grant application. To facilitate this feedback, the NEGC conducts an annual survey of its stakeholders to identify concerns, document how the project is doing, and solicit suggestions for improvement. One hundred forty-one email invitations were sent out between October and November 2011 to stakeholders of the New England Genetic Collaborative (NEGC). Of these, one opted out and 63 provided responses (45% response rate).
Since the 2009 report, there …
