Light The Way To Meeting Success!, Tarsha Gibson, Scott Johnson, Jane Polvadore, Courtney Short Apr 2010

Light The Way To Meeting Success!, Tarsha Gibson, Scott Johnson, Jane Polvadore, Courtney Short

Undergraduate Research Conference

A great opportunity exists for organizations to improve meeting efficiency. There are approximately 11 million meetings everyday in the United States. Meetings accomplish most business. Lack of a clear agenda, lack of 100% engagement by all participants, and lack of decisions are common problems plaguing most meetings. Biss Enterprises, a human resource support company in Dallas, Texas, will achieve these goals through a workshop, “Light the Way to Meeting Success,” which teaches a systematic curriculum.

The Impact Of Imagined Reactions On Feelings About Disclosing Stigmatized Vs. Non-Stigmatized Beliefs, David Briley Apr 2010

The Impact Of Imagined Reactions On Feelings About Disclosing Stigmatized Vs. Non-Stigmatized Beliefs, David Briley

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Past research has shown that people tend to conceal some aspects of their status (e.g., HIV positive diagnosis, homosexual orientation) because they fear that they will be stigmatized (Chaudoir, 2009), however little to no research exists regarding the divulgence of beliefs that may be stigmatized (e.g., belief in Bigfoot, ghosts, unconventional religious beliefs). My thesis extends research on concealable stigmatized status to research on stigmatized beliefs, by examining the degree to which people’s feelings about disclosure of stigmatized beliefs are impacted by anticipated responses from other people. I investigated this issue by asking participants to write about either a conventional …

He Said, She Said: (Dis)Agreement About The Occurrence Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Adult Couples, Harmonijoie Noel Apr 2010

He Said, She Said: (Dis)Agreement About The Occurrence Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Adult Couples, Harmonijoie Noel

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Using a sample of 1,269 dating, cohabitating, and married young adult couples, my dissertation explores the extent of disagreement about violence between heterosexual romantic partners, how the prevalence and common predictors of intimate partner violence (IPV) change because of disagreement, and how errors in the cognitive response process can explain disagreement. Disagreement occurs when one partner reports physical violence in their relationship but the other partner does not. Male and female-perpetrated violence are analyzed separately because disagreement may operate differently for these two types of violence. As a result of disagreement among partners, estimates of violence based on individual assessments …

Holism And Human History, Martin Zwick Apr 2010

Holism And Human History, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

This paper uses a systems-theoretic model to structure an account of human history. According to the model, a process, after its beginning and early development, often reaches a critical stage where it encounters some limitation. If the limitation is overcome, development does not face a comparable challenge until a second critical juncture is reached, where obstacles to further advance are more severe. At the first juncture, continued development requires some complexity-managing innovation; at the second, it needs some event of systemic integration in which the old organizing principle of the process is replaced by a new principle. Overcoming the first …

Assessing The Impact Of Police-Order-Maintenance Teams On Crime: An Application Of The ‘Broken Windows’ Hypothesis, Steven A. Pace, William Sousa, Dan Mcgrath

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

High levels of violent crime and disorder characterize certain neighborhoods of northwest Las Vegas. In April 2009, collaboration between academics and police personnel announced the deployment of a police order-maintenance unit designed to reduce minor and major offenses in these areas. Drawing on the Broken Windows hypothesis, the unit combined a detailed crime analysis with extensive police efforts to address specific community problems. This paper discusses the implementation and impact of the police order-maintenance unit during its operation.

Corruption In Metropolis, Josie Gatti Apr 2010

Corruption In Metropolis, Josie Gatti

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Corruption may be one of the most elusive phenomena in government. We may know it when we see it, but it is subject to individual perceptions shaped by a myriad of influences. The federal system of American governance was indented to impede the gross misuse of power; however, corruption is as much a part of our system today as it is around the world. While the study of the micro and individual level factors that inspire corruption are relevant, governance and business studies have long shown that structure and systems can affect behavior. This research reflects on those institutions and …

Cultural Identity And Ethnic Newspapers In Las Vegas, Paul J. Traudt, Michele A. Ferm Apr 2010

Cultural Identity And Ethnic Newspapers In Las Vegas, Paul J. Traudt, Michele A. Ferm

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Research suggests cultural identity is a fluid process characterized by individuals’ unique cultural, ethnic, and racial needs. Media are now known to reinforce ethnic group identity, language, beliefs, and customs. What are these relationships for ethnic groups living in Southern Nevada? Do media provide opportunities for cultural pluralism or for cultural assimilation? First phase results, reported last year, found ethnic radio and television in Las Vegas assimilated into larger, Anglo media business models despite programming that reinforced some aspects of ethnic cultures. This year we present second-phase results, assessing the role played by ethnic newspapers in the region. Analysis is …

Burglary Trends In Nevada, 1990-2007, Theresa Wilk, Terance D. Miethe, Timothy C. Hart Apr 2010

Burglary Trends In Nevada, 1990-2007, Theresa Wilk, Terance D. Miethe, Timothy C. Hart

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Burglary involves the unlawful breaking and entering into a home or other building with the intent to steal something within it. Nationally, about 2.2 million burglaries were known to the police in 2007 (UCR, 2007). Over the last two decades, Nevada’s burglary rate is consistently higher than the national average. There are many consequences of burglary as well as efforts to control these offenses. The presentation of this state data brief describes patterns of burglary in Nevada and compares them with national trends. It examines the prevalence of burglary over time, the different types of burglary and its offense attributes, …

The Impact Of U.S. Family Planning Programs On Fertility And Mortality: Evidence From The War On Poverty And Title X, Martha Bailey Apr 2010

The Impact Of U.S. Family Planning Programs On Fertility And Mortality: Evidence From The War On Poverty And Title X, Martha Bailey

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Over forty years ago, the U.S. government adopted a policy of funding domestic family planning services, and the effects of these programs have been debated ever since. Within an event-study framework, I exploit community-level variation in the timing of federal grants for family planning services under the Economic Opportunity Act (1965 to 1974) and Title X (1970 to 1980) to evaluate their impact. The results provide robust evidence that federal family planning grants reduced birth rates in funded communities by four percent within six years. I find no evidence that family planning grants reduced maternal or infant mortality rates.

Anti-littering Programs

The third quarter has progressed with the Hector’s Helpers program. We took action with hands-on classroom activities and lead three clean-up field trips. Students learned how to protect public lands in Southern Nevada through our anti-litter and desert dumping initiative. West Career Technical Academy students completed various GIS projects and finished the Adopt-A-Block Handbook. The Hector’s Helpers staff also submitted a formal proposal to study pre- and post-program surveys of students participating in the Hector's Helpers program.

Aps: Neglected Agency In Feed Of Transformation, Suncica Sue Vilic Apr 2010

Aps: Neglected Agency In Feed Of Transformation, Suncica Sue Vilic

Theses & Honors Papers

Approximately 3 million elders are mistreated annually in the United States. Due to factors such as increase in life expectancy, this number is likely to amplify. Adult Protective Services agencies across the nation have been established by The Social Security Act, with purpose and goal of providing services to stop elder mistreatment and prevent it from occurring further. Although program was created over 40 years ago, APS agencies continue to make little progress and are publicly and legislatively neglected when compared to child welfare programs and domestic violence programs.

This thesis presents overview of APS problems on local, state, and …

Explaining College Partner Violence In The Digital Age: An Instrumental Design Mixed Methods Study, Lisa Melander Apr 2010

Explaining College Partner Violence In The Digital Age: An Instrumental Design Mixed Methods Study, Lisa Melander

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Intimate partner violence is prevalent in contemporary society and certain groups of individuals such as college students are particularly at high risk for becoming involved in aggressive relationships. Despite the detailed body of literature that examines the risk factors for in-person partner violence, researchers have been criticized for their lack of attention to other behaviors that may be considered abusive. One new area of research is cyber aggression, which refers to the use of newer forms of technology (e.g., cell phones and computers) to facilitate repeated harassing behavior with the intention of harming others. Few scholars, however, examine these behaviors …
