Eitc Is Vital For Working-Poor Families In Rural America, William P. Colnes, Elizabeth Kneebone Sep 2007

Eitc Is Vital For Working-Poor Families In Rural America, William P. Colnes, Elizabeth Kneebone

Carsey Publications

In the 2004 tax year, tax filers claimed almost $40 billion through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), making the EITC one of the largest federal programs that provides cash supports to low-income working families in the United States. The EITC is especially important to rural families throughout the United States. Among poor and near-poor families, those in rural areas are more likely to be working, and they are more likely to be working in low-wage jobs.

Employment Rates Higher Among Rural Mothers Than Urban Mothers, Kristin Smith Sep 2007

Employment Rates Higher Among Rural Mothers Than Urban Mothers, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

As men's jobs in traditional rural industries, such as agriculture, natural resource extraction, and manufacturing disappear due to restructuring of rural labor markets, the survival of the family increasingly depends on women's waged labor. Rural mothers with children under age 6 have higher employment rates than their urban counterparts but have higher poverty rates, lower wages, and lower family income, placing rural mothers and their children in a more economically vulnerable situation than urban mothers.

Madre Patria (Mother Country): Latino Identity And Rejections Of Blackness, Marta I. Cruz-Janzen Sep 2007

Madre Patria (Mother Country): Latino Identity And Rejections Of Blackness, Marta I. Cruz-Janzen

Trotter Review

When I was in third grade, in Puerto Rico, I wanted to be the Virgin Mary for the community Christmas celebration. A teacher promptly informed me that the mother of Christ could not be black. A girl with blonde hair and blue eyes was selected for the role, and I was given the role of a shepherd. In middle school, also in Puerto Rico, I played a house servant for a school play. Only children of black heritage played the slaves and servants. A white student with a painted face portrayed the only significant black character. All the other characters …

Commentary, Clyde Taylor Sep 2007

Commentary, Clyde Taylor

Trotter Review

There's some buzz about Bill O'Reilly's racially ignorant remarks about Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem. But the darling of left-liberal media jokesters, Jon Stewart, had a good time on his Friday, September 21 show, first, at the expense of President Bush, and then at the expense of Nelson Mandela. Blogs are cheerleading the way Stewart caught Bush in another dumb statement — that Nelson Mandela is dead. The only comments I find on the web are kudos for Stewart's bashing of Bush. No mention of Stewart animalizing Mandela with sounds that echo the mumbo-jumbo sneer at nonwhite speech, or of his …

A Historical Overview Of Poverty Among Blacks In Boston, 1950-1990, Robert C. Hayden Sep 2007

A Historical Overview Of Poverty Among Blacks In Boston, 1950-1990, Robert C. Hayden

Trotter Review

Like most nineteenth-century residents of Boston, blacks worked hard to maintain their homes and families. Even before the Civil War, both enslaved and free blacks in "freedom's birthplace" worked long and arduous hours. Those who migrated to Boston from the South in the 1800s had come to secure higher wages, mobility, and opportunity for themselves and their families. Boston's black population grew from 2,000 in 1850 to 8,125 in 1890, and to 11,591 by 1900. In 1900, 39 percent of black Bostonians were northern-born (New England, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania), and 53 percent were southern-born.

Residential segregation for …

Black Expressive Art, Resistant Cultural Politics, And The [Re] Performance Of Patriotism, Deborah Elizabeth Whaley Sep 2007

Black Expressive Art, Resistant Cultural Politics, And The [Re] Performance Of Patriotism, Deborah Elizabeth Whaley

Trotter Review

During World War I, the Boston editor William Monroe Trotter described black American patriotism as a cautious endeavor and America's willingness to participate in the World War while it turned its back on domestic issues as misguided. In an era when freedom bypassed most black women and men within the nation-state of America and in an era of mass lynching in the American South, he proclaimed that black Americans and the U.S. government might refocus their efforts on making the world safer for "Negroes."

Like William Monroe Trotter, the rap group Public Enemy's rap odyssey "Welcome to the Terrordome," from …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Study groups and learning circles can offer a systematic way for early childhood teachers to interact about their work and create a culture of professional development. This paper describes how faculty systematically followed a collaborative co-inquiry process in order to improve a new early childhood interdisciplinary teacher preparation program. The team met on a regular basis throughout one academic year, with the stated objective of infusing observation/documentation knowledge and skills in a coherent and systematic way throughout the students’ program of studies. The group created a template of the cycle of inquiry, which could apply to all courses, and analyzed …

Rural America In The 21st Century: Perspectives From The Field , Andrea Colnes, Curt D. Grimm, Amy Seif Hattan, Nena F. Stracuzzi

Carsey Publications

Rural America in the twenty-first century must develop new relationships and new ways of doing things to ensure an economically prosperous, socially just, and environmentally healthy future. Tapping into the resourcefulness and creativity of rural people will be essential in addressing this challenge. However, they cannot do it alone. Rural communities need critical infrastructure, investment, capital, and services. The overlapping forces shaping rural America–demographic transitions, economic changes, the legacy of chronic underinvestment in community institutions, and environmental factors—present challenges and opportunities. With the voices and strategies of rural Americans in hand, the Rural Assembly can now move forward toward this …

Disclosure Of Abuse As A Moderating Variable For Internalized Shame In Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Ami Mariko Hood Frost Sep 2007

Disclosure Of Abuse As A Moderating Variable For Internalized Shame In Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Ami Mariko Hood Frost

Theses and Dissertations

Although previous research has established a correlation between childhood sexual abuse and internalized shame in adult survivors, very little research has been done to examine how disclosure affects that correlation. An adult female sample of survivors of childhood sexual abuse (N=467) were surveyed to determine a possible moderating effect of disclosure on internalized shame. It was predicted that 1) severity of abuse would be a significant predictor of internalized shame; 2) disclosure would be a significant predictor of internalized shame; and 3) disclosure would moderate the relationship between severity of abuse and internalized shame. Through structural equation modeling using AMOS, …

A Review By Joyce Milambiling Of Writing To Change The World, By Mary Pipher, Joyce Milambiling Sep 2007

A Review By Joyce Milambiling Of Writing To Change The World, By Mary Pipher, Joyce Milambiling

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

You have probably heard someone start a comedy routine or conversation with “I’ve got good news and bad news—first, the good news.” This is a popular opening gambit since life can be good and bad almost simultaneously, or because we know that if we approach something from one side in the sunlight, there is likely to be another side in the shadows.

In Writing to Change the World, Mary Pipher starts with the bad news. The world is a mess. She describes how U.S. politics and corporations have contributed to the abysmal state of the world and that “our world …

Rural Soldiers Continue To Account For Disproportionately High Share Of U.S. Casualties In Iraq And Afghanistan, William P. O'Hare, Bill Bishop Sep 2007

Rural Soldiers Continue To Account For Disproportionately High Share Of U.S. Casualties In Iraq And Afghanistan, William P. O'Hare, Bill Bishop

Carsey Publications

When the nation goes to war, all Americans are expected to make sacrifices. Today's rural Americans, however, have fewer job opportunities within their communities, and are joining the military at higher rates. In turn, rural communities are facing military losses in disproportionate numbers to their urban counterparts.

Citizens For Peace Minutes 08-08-07, Linda J. Lieder Sep 2007

Citizens For Peace Minutes 08-08-07, Linda J. Lieder

Citizens for Peace

After a brief break for refreshments, the group watched the movie, The Reluctant Prophet, by Fr. George Zabelka. This 1988 documentary explores Zabelka’s trips to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan to ask for forgiveness for these terrible crimes. The film included footage of the Pantex Nuclear Bomb plant in Amarillo, Texas, that is producing 5-8 mega bombs per day and transporting 180 bombs every three months for the Trident subs. The film also showed how we knowingly napalmed Dresden. Napalm is immoral and we knew it meant death for all civilians, yet we did it. Without repentance for these actions, there …

An International Perspective On Active Citizenship Among Lower Secondary Students, Wolfram Schulz

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

The new IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) will investigate the extent to which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens across a range of countries. ICCS will survey 13-to-14-year old students in over 30 countries in the year 2009. The ICCS outcome data will be obtained from representative samples of students in their eighth year of schooling and context data from the students, their schools and teachers.
