When James Anastos, a transgender man, turned 21 and moved into a residential living environment for the neurologically impaired in Staten Island, his male gender identity became a problem. "Being transgender, they told me they could have me put away if I dressed like a boy. They didn't like the way I dressed—all boys' clothes," he told me during an interview.

En-Gendering The Police: Women's Police Stations And Feminism In São Paulo, Cecília Santos Jan 2004

En-Gendering The Police: Women's Police Stations And Feminism In São Paulo, Cecília Santos

Sociology

This article contributes to feminist state theory and studies of women's police stations in Latin America by examining the processes shaping the multiple and changing positions of explicit alliance, opposition, and ambiguous alliance assumed by policewomen regarding feminists since the creation of the world's first women's police station in 1985 in São Paulo. While studies of women's police stations tend to overlook the political conjuncture, much of the literature on the state and gender explains the relationship between the state and women's movements as a function of the political regime. I argue for a more grounded feminist state theory, taking …

Gender Identity Disorder : A Misunderstood Diagnosis, Kristopher J. Cook Jan 2004

Gender Identity Disorder : A Misunderstood Diagnosis, Kristopher J. Cook

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A transsexual is defined as a person who strongly identifies with the opposite sex. This is also known as gender identity disorder. The individual may identify with the opposite sex to the point of believing that he or she is, in fact, a member of the opposite sex who is trapped in the wrong body. This causes the person to experience serious discomfort with his or her own biological sex. A person with gender identity disorder may or may not know that they actually have a disorder. Not knowing they have this disorder, they can’t explain the problems they experience …

Domestic Violence In Appalachia With A Focus On Cabell County, Wv, Deborah Ann Moore Jan 2004

Domestic Violence In Appalachia With A Focus On Cabell County, Wv, Deborah Ann Moore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study of domestic violence in Appalachia with a focus on Cabell County, West Virginia involves many aspects. The costs of domestic violence, as well as, how abused women here conceptualize the major contributors to abusive behavior in men are examined. The demographics of Cabell Co., WV are discussed. The effects of battering and violence on woman’s work and employability are examined. What I did not anticipate to find through the qualitative interviews is the absence of a honeymoon stage in Walker’s (1989) cycle of violence. Goode’s (1971) resource theory provides an influential explanation of violence in Appalachia where a …

Welfare As A Social Control In The United States, Jimmi Sue Brown Jan 2004

Welfare As A Social Control In The United States, Jimmi Sue Brown

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The question is whether the Clinton Administration “reforms” were a revolutionary concept or an extension of history’s pattern of forgetting the “deserving poor” and ignoring the “undeserving poor”. A literature search was conducted focusing on the deserving and undeserving poor in the United States over the past century. Historically, the deserving poor were defined as people who were impoverished as a consequence of old age, mental illness, physical illness and blindness or widowed and orphaned. The undeserving poor were people who were able to work, but did not and people of color. There have been occasions when the unemployed were …

Powers And Abilities Far Behind Those Of Mortal Men: An Examination Of The Comic Book Industry And Subculture Through A Feminist Sociological Perspective, James H. Frail Jr. Jan 2004

Powers And Abilities Far Behind Those Of Mortal Men: An Examination Of The Comic Book Industry And Subculture Through A Feminist Sociological Perspective, James H. Frail Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Comic books are a medium which should be able to reach readers, whether male or female. Yet, the overwhelming majority of comic book readers are male. The feminist sociological perspective asks what the role of women is in a given situation, why that had come to be, and how can it be changed for the betterment of society. The realm of comic books is cyclical between fans and the publishing companies. As such, both the content of the comics themselves, and the opinions and reading habits of the fans must be studied to determine where this disparity begins, and how …

Punishing The Poor: America’S Use Of The Welfare System As A Means Of Controlling The Impoverished, Jill R. Foley Jan 2004

Punishing The Poor: America’S Use Of The Welfare System As A Means Of Controlling The Impoverished, Jill R. Foley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Throughout America’s history, various welfare assistance programs have been implemented in an attempt to prevent the poor from coordinating a social uprising to overturn capitalism. Applying sociologist Karl Marx’s theories on capitalism and the presence of a false versus a class consciousness one can trace the growth of industrialization in American with the increasing efforts devoted to subduing the impoverished. Actions ranging from the imprisonment of the poor to child saving in the 1700 and 1800s to the use of police force to dissipate uprisings of the indigent in the 1900s provide evidence of the government's continued efforts to prevent …

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa Jan 2004

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa

Sociology

Human service agencies have traditionally provided services to a population considered "in need" of those services. Program participants are often seen solely as passive recipients of food, housing, health care, case management, etc. However, community developers, program evaluators, human service/development staff and administrators, as well as researchers are finding that involving program participants in the planning and administration of programs and research results in better programs, program utilization, and empowerment of program participants (Nichols 2002; Papineau and Kiely 1996).

Discusses the decline in the number of sexual abuse cases substantiated by child protective service agencies between 1992 and 2000. Creating Space For Dialogue, David L. Coppola Jan 2004

Creating Space For Dialogue, David L. Coppola

SHU Faculty Publications

Judaism, Christianity and Islam teach that it is God’s will that all people live in peace with each other. Peace will be adequately advanced only when religious people and religious institutions are integral to the processes of social justice in every part of the globe. It is religion that can help to reach into the depths of humanity’s struggles and the heights of human accomplishments to salve such injuries. Unfortunately, dialogue for the sake of building mutual respect, understanding and ultimately, peaceful coexistence seems more difficult than ever, in part due to the resistance and obstruction by some who claim …

Do You Have A Friend?: The Impact Of Personal Knowledge Of Someone With Aids On Attitudes Towards Aids, Leith Leonce Lombas Jan 2004

Do You Have A Friend?: The Impact Of Personal Knowledge Of Someone With Aids On Attitudes Towards Aids, Leith Leonce Lombas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of attitudes towards those with AIDS is relatively recent. Most studies have examined attitudes concerning health and medical concerns. Little research has focused on attitudes toward social and behavior concerns. The few that have focused on such attitudes have employed relatively small samples collected primarily out of convenience. The studies that have used national samples have primarily addressed public policy issues. Using national data from the 1988 General Social Survey, this paper examines the effects of personal knowledge about the AIDS virus and other attitudinal variables on four dimensions of social and behavioral concern for those with AIDS …

From Rico Suave To Livin' La Vida Loca: A Decade Of Evolution For Latino Pop Stars, Fernando Delgado, Bernadette Marie Calafell

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

This essay surveys an arc of representation associated with the shifting projections of Latino male musical artists from the early 1990s to the end of the decade. This arc begins with the straightforward and seemingly uncomplicated, hence stereotypical, constructions of Gerardo and Kid Frost—two artists who were popular in the early 1990s—and ends with an analysis of the rather more complicated persona of Ricky Martin, whose public image has often challenged presumptions of Latino male identity and sexuality.

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Ecological theory and basic assumptions for the promotion of effective mothering among low-income and working-poor women are applied in relation to a particularly vulnerable population: street-level prostitution-involved women. Qualitative data from 38 street-level prostituted women shows barriers to effective mothering at the individual, community and societal levels. Suggestions for enhancing the lives and long-term well-being of prostituted women with children are included.
