Gender Bias Among Mental Health Professionals, Joan B. Schroering
Gender Bias Among Mental Health Professionals, Joan B. Schroering
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The frequently cited Broverman study (Broverman, Broverman, Clarkson, Rosenkrantz, and Vogel, 1970) has motivated a great deal research in the area of gender bias, particularly investigations into the attitudes of mental health professionals. After a review of the literature referencing the Broverman study, the current study, utilizing the research patterns set forth in that research, examines if and to what degree gender bias affects mental health professionals in the state of West Virginia. The results of this study indicate that mental health professionals across the state hold fairly equitable and balanced views of the male and female gender, with one …

A Workplace Study Of Four Southern-Ontario Children’S Aid Societies (Summary Report), Cheryl Harvey, Deena Mandell, Carol A. Stalker, Karen Frensch
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
Children’s Aid Societies have experienced extensive change since the implementation of recent child welfare reforms in Ontario. Agencies are facing a number of challenges including recruiting and retaining staff, high workloads, extensive requirements for documentation and administration, and less time to serve families and children. This paper explores employee experiences as service providers in child welfare. A survey was distributed to employees of four Children’s Aid Societies and employees participated in a series of focus groups. The paper discusses how workplace experiences contribute to job satisfaction, to stress and burnout, and to staff turnover. Actions organizations can take to improve …

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents
As we all know, people from all over the world want to come to America to pursue a better life for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, however, some people entrust their lives to some very dangerous people in the effort to gain our shores. I have been told that the business of trafficking human beings is about a $9– 1/2 billion business.
No. 29: The New Brain Drain From Zimbabwe, Daniel S. Tevara, Jonathan Crush
No. 29: The New Brain Drain From Zimbabwe, Daniel S. Tevara, Jonathan Crush
Southern African Migration Programme
All the signs point to the existence of a growing exodus of skilled Zimbabweans from the country. Although the precise dimensions and impacts of this “brain drain” have yet to be determined, the Zimbabwean government has recently sought to stem the tide with various policy measures. The education and health sectors appear to be the hardest hit although professionals in other sectors have also been leaving in numbers.
The Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) has undertaken a multi-country study of the brain drain within and from the Southern African Development Community (SADC). SAMP’s primary contribution is to examine the skills …

No. 28:Changing Attitudes To Immigration And Refugee Policy In Botswana, Eugene Campbell, Johan Oucho
Southern African Migration Programme
For the last two decades, Botswana has had the reputation as a “country of immigration,” based on the large-scale import of skilled expatriates from Africa, Asia and the West. Successive census reports and immigration data, as well as previous SAMP surveys undertaken in the late 1990s, confirm the appropriateness of the designation. The SAMP surveys concentrated on three themes: (a) the attitudes and migration behaviour of skilled foreigners in the country; (b) the attitudes of Batswana towards cross-border migration to South Africa; and (c) the emigration potential of skilled Batswana. The surveys highlighted the tolerant and generally welcoming attitude prevailing …

Effects Of Divorce On Adolescents : Interventions, Abigail C. Buchan
Effects Of Divorce On Adolescents : Interventions, Abigail C. Buchan
Graduate Research Papers
The family environment is a major contributor to the development and well-being of children and adolescents. The traditional definition for family is ever changing, and diversity in families is becoming more acknowledged and accepted. It is well known that currently more than half of all marriages end in divorce. It is necessary to understand the significant challenges and issues that young people of divorced families are faced with in order to facilitate positive change and resiliency in the counseling process. The author provides a historical overview of the divorce epidemic, the effects of divorce on youth, as well as implications …
Service Learning Among University Students Through Working With South Asian Children, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Wing No, Helen Lau
Service Learning Among University Students Through Working With South Asian Children, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Wing No, Helen Lau
OSL Journal / Paper Series 論文
The benefits of service learning for the intellectual and personal development of students have been discussed in the past few decades. Jacoby (1996) defines service learning as, “a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development”. The idea of using a service-learning approach in teaching curricula is “far from new” (Gray et al, 2000) and the scope of it has been expanding substantially in tertiary education overseas, though it is still not pervasive in Hong Kong. The Lingnan Angels is …

University-School Link Partnership Projects (Uslp) For Promotion Of Intergeneration Communication, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, David Rosser Phillips, Meng Soi, Florence Fong
APIAS Monograph 專題論文
Started as a pilot experiment, the University-School Link Partnership (USLP) was designed to encourage interactions between young and old people. It was first initiated in 2000 and implemented from September 2001 to September 2002. Co-organized by the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS), Lingnan University and the Church of Christ in China Ming Kei College, the USLP involved four schools and ten social welfare organizations with a total of 288 students, 265 older persons and 106 volunteers participating in the project.
The aims of the project were to enhance the intergenerational relationship between the young and the older participants through …

The Meaning Of Care For Older Chinese Caregivers : An Exploratory Model Of Positive Caring, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, K. M., Carmen Ng, C. K., Liliane Chan, David Rosser Phillips
APIAS Working Paper 工作論文
Caring is often a highly personalized and individual activity. Through in-depth and searching interviews with two older care-givers, this study explored the determinants that help to sustain cares in their long-term care role and proposes an explanatory model for sustaining care. Attempts were made to uncover those meanings held by Chinese care-givers in interpreting their roles in a positive way despite the enormous demands placed on them by care-giving or, if they interpreted their care giving negatively, the attitudes that sustained their giving of care. Narrative accounts were obtained through separate interviews (conducted by two experienced social workers) asking open-ended …

[Review Of] Stephen F. Feraca. Wakinyan: Lakota Religion In The Twentieth Century And Julian Rice. Before The Great Spirit: The Many Faces Of Sioux Spirituality, Raymond A. Bucko
Ethnic Studies Review
Each of these authors provides unique approaches and insights concerning Lakota ritual and belief. Julian Rice, a prolific writer on Lakota Literature, attempts to reconstruct the essence of Lakota religion before European contact while Feraca, who logged long periods of interaction with Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Reservation as a government employee and field worker, provides an intricate portrait of Lakota ritual during his tenure on the Pine Ridge reservation. They reach similar basic understandings of Lakota religious practice: the importance of the acquisition of spiritual power, the primacy of kinship, the democratic and charismatic nature of individual religious …

[Review Of] Hoerder, Dirk. Cultures In Contact: World Migrations In The Second Millennium, Jac D. Bulk
Ethnic Studies Review
Cultures in Contact is an ambitious tome of the annotated world history of human mass migrations both within and between national boundaries. This book provides a glorious descriptive wealth of when, where, and to a lesser extent "why" mass migrations have occurred across the largest and most populous regions of the planet earth over the span of the past millennium. In this regard it may serve as a valued reference work for anyone curious about the "bigger picture" of migration flows; however, those seeking a simplistic theoretical synthesis that would account for the myriad patterns of human migrations over the …
Ethnic And Racial Definitions As Manifestations Of American Public Policy, Ashton Wesley Welch
Ethnic And Racial Definitions As Manifestations Of American Public Policy, Ashton Wesley Welch
Ethnic Studies Review
Official definitions of race and ethnicity in American law reveal a great deal about public policy in an environment of ethnic pluralism. Despite some ambiguity over who is black or Hispanic or an Aleut, relatively few people fall between the wide cracks in the American patchwork of identity classifications. Those cracks, however, tell us a great deal about the ambivalence of the American polity toward ethnicity.1

[Review Of] Teodros Kiros, Ed. Explorations In African Political Thought: Identity, Community, Ethics, Ashton Wesley Welch
Ethnic Studies Review
Explorations in African Political Thought: Identity, Community, Ethics is a collection of ten essays written both by newcomers and by well-known African philosophers. Most of the authors are currently teaching in American universities. It is part of the growing literature that cements African philosophy as an integral part of the discipline of philosophy while charting new venues for the field. The objective of this book is to illustrate that African philosophy can serve African people as a moralactivity guided by the principles of practical reason in addressing the underlying problems of African economic, political, and social institutions. Teodros Kiros, the …

Battering, Forgiveness And Redemption, Brenda V. Smith
Project on Addressing Prison Rape - Articles
While there has been some acknowledgement that battered women kill, there has been less acceptance that battered women may have been arrested for some other offense. Can those fallible women be “forgiven” for their offenses and allowed to receive the community affirmation, validation, social services, and protection that other battered women receive? This Article focuses on a topic that, though discussed, has frequently been dismissed in the domestic violence discourse; battered women’s forgiveness of their batterers and battered women’s process of forgiving themselves for participating in the relationship.

Reproductive Health Services In Kwazulu Natal, South Africa: A Situation Analysis Study Focusing On Hiv/Aids Services, Lewis Ndhlovu, Catherine Searle, Robert A. Miller, Andrew A. Fisher, Ester Snyman, Nancy L. Sloan
HIV and AIDS
This Horizons report examines the readiness of reproductive health services in South Africa, which are primarily geared to women, to deliver HIV and AIDS treatment, care, and prevention services. The goal of the study was to obtain information from a representative sample of provincial health care facilities offering reproductive health services in KwaZulu Natal to meet the growing demand for HIV/AIDS-related services. Ninety-eight hospitals, community health centers, and clinics participated in the situation analysis that identified gaps in service delivery and determined priorities for service integration. Results of the study were presented to a large audience of Department of Health, …

Empowering Communities To Respond To Hiv/Aids: Ndola Demonstration Project On Maternal And Child Health: Operations Research Final Report, Hope Humana, Linkages, National Food And Nutrition Commission, Ndola District Health Management Team, Horizons Program, Zambia Integrated Health Project
HIV and AIDS
A pre–post intervention study conducted in Zambia by Horizons and local NGOs and governmental organizations demonstrated that HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and infant feeding counseling (IFC) to mothers attending maternal and child health (MCH) clinics are vital components of any mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) reduction strategy, whether or not antiretrovirals (ARVs) are available. These interventions enable mothers to make informed and healthy decisions. Data from the Ndola Demonstration Project yielded encouraging results from efforts to improve the capacity of mothers to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their infant. The interventions succeeded in raising …

Understanding Emancipation: Lincoln's Proclamation And The Overthrow Of Slavery, Allen C. Guelzo
Understanding Emancipation: Lincoln's Proclamation And The Overthrow Of Slavery, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
The most common trope that governs understanding of Abraham Lincoln and emancipation is that of progress. The variations on that trope are legion, and they include notions of Lincoln's journey toward emancipation, his growth in understanding the justice of emancipation, and his path to the Emancipation Proclamation. "Lincoln was," as Horace Greeley put it, "a growing man"; growing from a stance of moral indifference and ignorance at the time of his election in 1860 toward deep conviction about African American freedom by the time of the Emancipation Proclamation less than two years later. That was a generous sentiment, since it …
Improving The Well Being Of At-Risk Families: Exploring Clients’ Perceptions Of Preventative Services, Lenore M. Mcwey
Improving The Well Being Of At-Risk Families: Exploring Clients’ Perceptions Of Preventative Services, Lenore M. Mcwey
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Low income and working poor families are exposed to tremendous stressors, which in turn can impede their ability to care for their children (Dyk, 2004). In 2000, reports of abuse and/or neglect of over five million children were made to Child Protective Services (CPS) Agencies (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002). These families are often termed “at-risk” because of the possibility that the children could be placed in foster care. One prevention strategy used to help at-risk families is in-home family therapy. The Young Investigator Award through the University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research (UKCPR) enabled me …

Aids, Orphans, And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of The Dilemma Of Public Health And Development, Joe Lugalla
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
HIV/AIDS is having devastating consequences on families, young children, and other vulnerable social groups. In this paper, I review the impact of HIV/AIDS on families and development in sub-Saharan Africa. I begin by showing the magnitude of the problem and the factors that have led to rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in this sub-continent. I discuss gender inequality, poverty, social inequality, and globalization, and show how these facilitate the rapid spread of the epidemic. I show how AIDS is creating a mass of orphans on the one hand, and how it is impacting development and creating new public health contradictions on …
Reconstructing The Chinese American Experience In Lowell, Massachusetts, 1870s–1970s, Shehong Chen
Reconstructing The Chinese American Experience In Lowell, Massachusetts, 1870s–1970s, Shehong Chen
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
This is a study of the Chinese American experience in Lowell, Massachusetts, over the century from the 1870s through the 1970s. I have selected this period for study because the 1870s witnessed the first appearance of Chinese laundries in Lowell, and the 1970s, the disappearance of Chinese laundries in Lowell. Notably, this study attempts to fill in two existing gaps in historical scholarship. First, the experiences of many of Lowell’s ethnic groups have been documented or studied, but the experience of the Chinese has been ignored. Secondly, the history of Chinese Americans in New England cities and towns has generally …
Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare
Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare
Whittier Scholars Program
This senior project is an art creation of 30 signs that address how the print media portrays women and imbues unrealistic and potentially harmful messages into their advertisements. This study discusses how advertisements contain information that is not obvious from a quick glance, but due to the numerous ads that people digest every day, this information becomes subconsciously absorbed and affects all aspects of one’s life. This study highlights how every aspect of what advertisements convey, intentional or not, matters a great deal and has a huge impact on people’s lives. This project also includes Senior Symposium notes, the aforementioned …
