Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James Jan 2002

Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The transformation of behavior into deviance requires many players, individuals, and institutions invested in the social construction process and its outcomes. Although considered private recreational matters by some, gambling and having sex are gaining spotlight in the addiction arena. With the growing availability of casino entertainment, lotteries, OTB venues, prostitution, internet pornography, and 900 numbers, gambling and sex are interpreted, labeled, and treated by addiction recovery specialists. Using ethnographic methods and face-to-face interviews, I explore a southern community’s institutions and practitioners providing services to gambling and sex addicts. I examine the community’s discourse and its methods for defining and controlling …

Does Archieving Social Policy Goals Insure Positive Outcomes: From Welfare Reliance Of Wage Work In Rural Louisiana, Lydia Bentin Blalock

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research was Wave II of a longitudinal, qualitative study designed to describe the outcomes of welfare reform legislation on rural families in Louisiana as they tried to comply with provisions of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. This particular study looked at a subset of women (n=12) from Wave II and explored two questions: (a) Whether the decline in Louisiana welfare caseloads translated into rural women finding and keeping jobs; and (b) What is the likelihood that the women employed at the time of this study will be able to sustain their work efforts and …

Space And Organizations: The Ecology Of Rural Ngos In San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Patricia Marie Campion Jan 2002

Space And Organizations: The Ecology Of Rural Ngos In San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Patricia Marie Campion

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The field of organizational ecology has been reduced to studies of population dynamics. Ecology, however, is a much broader field, that includes relational, spatial, and temporal dimensions. It allows us to combine existing theories of organizations to study their distribution across space. I combine insights from the new institutionalism, population ecology, and resource-dependence theory, to investigate the factors that influence the location of NGO activities in the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. I conducted interviews and participant observation in 51 rural NGOs. The uneven distribution of NGOs in the state is not the result of their strategy to reach …

Introduction: Emigration From Vejle Amt Jan 2002

Introduction: Emigration From Vejle Amt

The Bridge

Picture postcard regions of Denmark like Vejle Amt, "with idyllic little towns, without any new factories and workshops, usually produced a great number of emigrants," according to the Danish historian of emigration, Kristian Hvidt. Vejle Amt was a verdant land of deep fjords, rolling wooded hills, and ancient villages, giving way to wide stretches of heath and bog in the west. It remained an idyllic, old-fashioned area throughout the period of emigration. People streamed to America because the population of Vejle Amt was growing but few new jobs were being created. They also left out of discontent over life in …

From Vejle Amt To Iowa In 1868: An Immigrant's Christmas Letter, Christian Poul Christensen Jan 2002

From Vejle Amt To Iowa In 1868: An Immigrant's Christmas Letter, Christian Poul Christensen

The Bridge

Discontent was rife in nineteenth-century Denmark, to be sure, but why would a prosperous, locally prominent individual like Christian Poul Christiansen choose to take his wife and family and leave their native land forever? Economic necessity did not drive them out into the wide world. "It was asserted that Christiansen brought along from Denmark around $20,000," wrote Rasmus Jurgens in Danske i Amerika in 1908.1 "This family is very wealthy. Through their influence, Randall Station was established, three miles north of Story City, in Hamilton County, [Iowa]. They built a store here and ran a general store, later a lumber …

Becoming American: The Autobiography Of C. P. Peterson, D. D. S. (1867-1958), J. R. Christianson

The Bridge

In the western parts of Hvejsel parish in the nineteenth century, the fertile, rolling moraine landscape of eastern Jutland gave way to an immense, sandy plain covered by heath, bog, and streamside meadowland. Settlement was much more scattered on these moors than in the village farmlands of the east. Shepherds sang to the wind and knit their woolen yarn into stockings as flocks grazed on the open heath, and cattle grew fat in the meadows by lonely manor houses.

Gender Contests, Susan Frelich Appleton Jan 2002

Gender Contests, Susan Frelich Appleton

Scholarship@WashULaw

This contribution for the “Law, Ethics, and Gender in Medicine” column in the Journal of Gender Specific Medicine interrogates the understanding of gender itself, at a time when transgender and intersex issues were just beginning to “come out” in both popular culture and case law. Against this background, the column explores the roles that physicians have played in such gender contests and considers how evolving medical attitudes can help achieve reform.

Chaotic Patterns Of Restraining Power: The Dynamics Of Personal Decision Making In A Long-Term Care Facility, Sandra Loucks Campbell Jan 2002

Chaotic Patterns Of Restraining Power: The Dynamics Of Personal Decision Making In A Long-Term Care Facility, Sandra Loucks Campbell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This is a study of personal decision-making dynamics at multiple levels in an Ontario Home for the Aged, including managers, staff leaders, direct care workers, non-direct care workers and residents. Personnel dyadic units of differential decision-making power were postulated: managers/staff leaders, staff leaders/direct care workers and direct care workers/residents. Weber's bureaucracy, other organizational power literature and chaos theory provide the theoretical frame. Staff completed a self administered questionnaire package which included variants of the Staff Involvement in Decision Making scale (Kruzich, 1989), open-ended and demographic questions. Residents were assisted in completing a similar, but shorter, questionnaire. Cognitively impaired residents' decision …

A Relational Self Model Of Gender Role Identity Of Young Taiwanese Women Within Their Cultural Context (China), Chu-Li Julie Liu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This research aims both to investigate the gender role identity characteristics of young Taiwanese women who grew up in the post-Martial Law era and to develop a gender role identity model of young Taiwanese women. A grounded theory approach and in-depth interviews were employed. Open sampling, variational sampling, and discriminate sampling, along with open coding, axial coding, and selective coding were employed. Twenty-three young Taiwanese undergraduate women, aged nineteen to twenty one, were interviewed. Self-in-relation theory, female moral reasoning, women's ways of knowing, characteristics of collectivist cultures, Chinese/Taiwanese cultural assumptions about women, and the impact of Taiwanese women's participation in …

The Plains Commence: Lewis And Clark On The Middle Missouri, Jay H. Buckley

THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY awakened to a damp morning on July 14, 1804. Rain had fallen all night and the wetness delayed departure until 7 a.m. A half-hour later, an ominous black cloud blew in, accompanied by wind and rain that pummeled the 55-foot keelboat and two pirogues. Unable to seek safety on either shore - because of banks caving in on one side and snags lining the other - the men anchored the keelboat midstream and braced for the squall to pass.

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2002

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

September 11 forged an American unity not seen since Pearl Harbor. We shelved our political differences, put the culture war on simmer, and lost interest in celebrity scandal (think of Gary Condit). Americans rallied behind our Commander-in-Chief, and we agreed that our lives would never be the same. America’s vacation from history had ended, and we had forever lost our innocence and our perceived immunity from harm. When our Commander-in-Chief said that a return to “normalcy” would deny Bin Laden his victory, we rallied behind that, too.

Service-Learning In California: A Profile Of The Calserve Service-Learning Partnerships (1997-2000): Executive Summary, Mary Sue Ammon, Andrew Fureo, Bernadette Chi, Ellen Middaugh

Partnerships/Community

Responding to the National and Community Service Act of 1990, the California Department of Education developed the CaiServe Initiative to support K-12 service-learning partnerships that would enhance student academic achievement and civic responsibility, increase teacher effectiveness and satisfaction, heighten school district awareness of service-learning, and provide authentic service to the community. The 1997-2000 local evaluation process was designed to assist CaiServe partnerships in the collection of participation and impact data for their local service-learning activities. The data collected were also to be used to develop a statewide profile of service-learning participation and impact across CaiServe's funded partnerships. The profile report …

Campus-Community Partnerships: The Terms Of Engagement, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher Jan 2002

Campus-Community Partnerships: The Terms Of Engagement, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher

Partnerships/Community

The emergence of service-learning in higher education and the renewed emphasis on community involvement presents colleges and universities with opportunities to develop campus-community partnerships for the common good. These partnerships can leverage both campus and community resources to address critical issues in local communities. Campus-community partnerships are a series of interpersonal relationships between (a) campus administrators, faculty, staff, and students and (b) community leaders, agency personnel, and members of communities. The phases of relationships (i.e., initiation, development, maintenance, dissolution) and the dynamics of relationships (i.e., exchanges, equity, distribution of power) are explored to provide service-learning instructors and campus personnel with …

The Relationship Between Sex Role Stereotypes, Domestic Violence Training, History Of Law Enforcement Involvement, And Law Enforcement Officer's Perceptions Of A Domestic Violence Incident, Kristen M. Schuch Jan 2002

The Relationship Between Sex Role Stereotypes, Domestic Violence Training, History Of Law Enforcement Involvement, And Law Enforcement Officer's Perceptions Of A Domestic Violence Incident, Kristen M. Schuch

Masters Theses

This study examined how police officers perceptions of a domestic violence situation are influenced by sex role stereotypes, domestic violence training and history of police intervention. Participants were police officers employed in sheriff's departments or city police departments. Officers received several surveys and a vignette describing a domestic violence scene. Officers were given one of two vignettes, one describing a situation in which there have been previous calls to the address and one in which this is the first call and were then asked several questions to assess their perceptions. Sex role stereotypes were assessed using the Sex Role Egalitarianism …
