An Ethnobotanical Study Of The Medical Plants In Polynesia During The Pre-European Era, Tanya Shirley Piilani Regal-Factora
An Ethnobotanical Study Of The Medical Plants In Polynesia During The Pre-European Era, Tanya Shirley Piilani Regal-Factora
Whittier Scholars Program
The study done is just a brief introduction of how examining the medicinal uses of plants would provide further evidence to the origin of migration patterns of early Polynesian settlers. Even in its preliminary form this medicinal plant study provides evidence of similar migration patterns to past studies which are based on archeological evidence such as the Lapita pottery. These results included included a west-to-east migrational pattern that mirrored the trend of the Lapita pottery. As cultural divergence increases evidence of cultural similarity decreases. The medicinal plant study reinforces past theories with new evidence. Further studies on the examination of …

From Aahe's Series On Service-Learning In The Disciplines, Teacher Education Volume, Joseph A. Erickson, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Higher Education
Progressive teacher educators face a pair of daunting yet crucial tasks. New teachers must be prepared to function successfully in schools as they exist today and also be educated to take a leadership role in the improvement and reculturing of K-12 education to more fully meet the needs of individual students and resolve societal problems. One approach that can address both these tasks is the integration of service-learning experiences into teacher preparation programs.
Service-Learning In South Carolina, Kathy Gibson Carter
Service-Learning In South Carolina, Kathy Gibson Carter
Service Learning, General
Thousands of students across South Carolina have helped improve their communities by participating in service-learning programs while strengthening their classroom learning experiences. Service-learning is one of the work-site components of the SC School-to-Work Transition Act of 1994. This Act provides all students with opportunities to connect what they learn in school with the real world through learning experiences at a work-site. Through service-learning, students combine classroom instruction with work-based activities in a non-profit organization or community agency. Students learn valuable interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic by participating as a member of a work team with specific goals.
The Heart Of Equal Protection: Education And Race, Sharon E. Rush
The Heart Of Equal Protection: Education And Race, Sharon E. Rush
UF Law Faculty Publications
Brown vs. Board of Education established more than the unconstitutionality of the separate but equal doctrine in public education. Brown also gave the importance of education a constitutional dimension. Involuntary racial segregation creates a stigma wherever it exists which indisputably affects all children's self-esteem by possibly undermining that of children of color and by artificially inflating that of White children. Unfortunately, more recent cases that raise questions about the right to a public education seem less willing to acknowledge the importance of education and the importance of integration in public education. Since Brown, the Court has held repeatedly that …
[Review Of] Daniel Friedman And Sharon Grimberg. Miss India Georgia, Kasturi Dasgupta
[Review Of] Daniel Friedman And Sharon Grimberg. Miss India Georgia, Kasturi Dasgupta
Ethnic Studies Review
Miss India Georgia is an intelligent and insightful video documentary that tells the story of four Indian American teenagers, who in `the process of preparing for Atlanta's annual South Asian beauty pageant reflect on the trials and tribulations of their bi-cultural lives. It is a timeless tale told over and over as each new wave of immigrants has come ashore and their children have had to resolve the incongruities of their multiple ethnicities.
[Review Of] Rakhmiel Peltz. From Immigrant To Ethnic Culture: American Yiddish In South Philadelphia, Ayala Fader
[Review Of] Rakhmiel Peltz. From Immigrant To Ethnic Culture: American Yiddish In South Philadelphia, Ayala Fader
Ethnic Studies Review
Rakhmiel Peltz, in From Immigrants to Ethnic Culture: American Yiddish in South Philadelphia, presents one of the few ethnographies available on spoken American Yiddish in his investigation of the elderly children of immigrant Jews in a Philadelphia neighborhood. Drawing on audiotaped ethnographic data which includes life histories, personal narratives, interviews, and naturally-occurring interactions in local contexts, Peltz examines how Jewish residents attempt to maintain their yiddishkayt (`Jewishness') as they become a shrinking minority in what was once a thriving Jewish community.
[Review Of] Phillipa Kafka. (Un)Doing The Missionary Position: Gender Asymmetry In Contemporary Asian American Women's Writing, David Goldstein-Shirley
[Review Of] Phillipa Kafka. (Un)Doing The Missionary Position: Gender Asymmetry In Contemporary Asian American Women's Writing, David Goldstein-Shirley
Ethnic Studies Review
Phillipa Kafka's clever book title turns on her deconstruction of what she sees as a simultaneous patriarchal and racist orientation of some contemporary literary criticism, akin to the unquestioned, naturalized supremacy presumed by agents of political imperialism such as missionaries. By focusing on what she sees as feminist and postfeminist writing by contemporary Asian American women authors -- specifically, their attention to gender asymmetry -- she demonstrates that we can read these works as a collective strike against the sexism of much (male) postcolonial, Marxist, and deconstructionist criticism and the racism of much (white) feminist criticism. Her readings of Amy …
Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley
Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley
Ethnic Studies Review
Few subjects in the ethnic experience of the United States are as fraught with mythology and misinformation as black cowboys. Although absent from most classic history texts of the American West, black cowboys probably constituted about a quarter of the working cowboys in the nineteenth century, although q uantitative data to establish a number are lacking. This essay reviews the historiography of black cowboys published during the last half-century, noting how much of it is marred either by glossing over the presence of black cowboys or by credulously repeating estimates of their numbers established by earlier work. The essay speculates …
[Review Of] Cora Govers And Hans Vermeulen, Eds. The Politics Of Ethnic Consciousness, Jonathan A. Majak
[Review Of] Cora Govers And Hans Vermeulen, Eds. The Politics Of Ethnic Consciousness, Jonathan A. Majak
Ethnic Studies Review
Govers and Vermeulen's book seems to be a timely one, considering the resurgence of inter-ethnic strife that is causing so much misery in many parts of the world, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war. The book, however, is not an expose on the politics of ethnic consciousness. Rather, it is a collection of case studies that address certain aspects of ethnic consciousness. Govers and Vermeulen provide the theoretical context for these studies in the introductory first chapter of the book. Indeed, the book can be usefully divided into two main parts, …
[Review Of] Daniele Conversi. The Basques, The Catalans And Spain: Alternative Routes To Nationalist Mobilisation, Laura Bathurst
[Review Of] Daniele Conversi. The Basques, The Catalans And Spain: Alternative Routes To Nationalist Mobilisation, Laura Bathurst
Ethnic Studies Review
In this book, Daniele Conversi compares and contrasts two widely known nationalist movements in Spain: the Basques in the northeast and the Catalans in the east. Working from both primary and secondary sources including documentary material such as political pamphlets, communiqu's, periodicals, and nationalists' declarations and writings, as well as sociolinguistic data and personal interviews, he constructs a detailed historical account of the emergence of both movements at the end of the nineteenth century through the 1980s. Included in his book are maps, glossary, extensive notes, index, and large bibliography. Conversi's particular focus is on the leading intellectuals and intelligentsia …
[Review Of] Juan F. Perea, Ed. Immigrants Out!: The New Nativism And The Anti-Immigrant Impulse In The United States, Robert Mark Silverman
[Review Of] Juan F. Perea, Ed. Immigrants Out!: The New Nativism And The Anti-Immigrant Impulse In The United States, Robert Mark Silverman
Ethnic Studies Review
Immigrants Out! offers a response to nativist sentiment in the contemporary discussion of immigration policy. Individually, each chapter in this edited volume charts the development of contemporary nativist sentiment, while identifying the themes that have nurtured nativism historically. Some important relationships are identified between issue oriented politics and more general theses that emerge from nativist thought. For instance, in several passages English-only laws are described as a small, although highly symbolic, component of a broader ideology based on separatism and isolationism. Similarly, proposals to place restrictions on social welfare benefits for immigrants are linked to the more general curtailment of …
[Review Of] Manuel De Jesus Hemandez-Gutierrez And David William Foster, Eds. Literatura Chicana, 1965-1995: An Anthology In Spanish, English, And Calo, Phillipa Kafka
Ethnic Studies Review
The works included in this anthology, many of them previously printed, reflect six characteristic themes of Chicana/o contemporary literature: "the search for identity, feminism, conservatism, revisionism, homoeroticism, and internationalism" (xix). Organized chronologically according to various literary genres and replete with many useful notes, the anthology contains no index. Further, Literatura Chicana could also be assigned as required reading in American Studies courses, specifically in contemporary American literature courses, even though the editors suggest that the anthology be adopted for university level humanities, Spanish, ethnic, Chicana/o literature courses, in women's studies programs and social science departments.
[Review Of] Jeffrey Rubin-Dorsky And Shelley Fisher Fishkin. People Of The Book: Holstein Thirty Scholars Reflect On Their Jewish Identity, Sandra J. Holstein
[Review Of] Jeffrey Rubin-Dorsky And Shelley Fisher Fishkin. People Of The Book: Holstein Thirty Scholars Reflect On Their Jewish Identity, Sandra J. Holstein
Ethnic Studies Review
People of the Book is an important contribution to ethnic studies and identity politics. It is a dense and reflective collection of essays which defines Judaism in personal and scholarly contexts. As one of the contributors, Nancy Miller, says: "It's not easy to write about being Jewish" (168). The editors divide the essays into four parts. After the introductory essay, Part 2, "Transformations," examines how the authors' activism grows out of their Jewish heritage. "Negotiations," looks at Jewish definition in the context of other Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and "Explorations," shows the relationship between being Jewish and pursuing a discipline. …
Hispanic Immigration And Spanish Maintenance As Indirect Measures Of Ethnicity: Reality And Perceptions, Shaw N. Gynan
Hispanic Immigration And Spanish Maintenance As Indirect Measures Of Ethnicity: Reality And Perceptions, Shaw N. Gynan
Ethnic Studies Review
Many supporters of official English have accused U.S. Hispanics of refusing to learn English and rejecting the traditional assimilationist model by clinging to their ethnolinguistic identity. An analysis of U.S. Census data from the last thirty years refutes these claims. The picture of U.S. Hispanic maintenance of ethnolinguistic identity has evolved. Here we show that while adult Spanish loyalty has decreased, youth Spanish loyalty has increased; however, Spanish maintenance does not occur at the expense of English proficiency. Once recent immigrants are subtracted from the Hispanic population, U.S. Census figures show clearly that long-term limited English proficiency has decreased substantially. …
The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams
The Commodification Of Caring : A Hospice Case Study, Tina Marie Alford Williams
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This paper discusses the process of commodification by a non-profit hospice as seen through informants and participant observation. The objective was to describe how an all-volunteer organization could transform into a business when reimbursement was introduced into the exchange equation, why it happened, and the effects the change had on the people involved. What emerged from the interpretations was a detailed description of the commodification process in four areas: a) the emphasis of the money factor in the delivery of care, b) a shift to high-tech care and sicker patients, c) a calling and its relationship to non-profit work, and …
Living On A Fault Line: Political Violence Against Women In Algeria [Arabic], Leila Hessini
Living On A Fault Line: Political Violence Against Women In Algeria [Arabic], Leila Hessini
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This study raises three questions to better comprehend the crisis women face in Algeria today: how are the state and the opposition groups addressing and defining women’s contemporary status, what is the link between women’s status and violence against them, and what are the tactics both of resistance and accommodation that Algerian women are using to survive in such a context? Throughout this study, the term “Islamic Fundamentalists” refers to movements and people in Algeria who use the “recovery” of early principles of the Ideal Muslim Community to develop their idea of a future Islamic “social order,” with the ultimate …

Situation Analysis Of Lgu Health Centers For Integrating Rti Management Within The Philippines Fp/Mch Program, Jesus Encena, Carmeli Marie Chaves, Marilou P. Costello, Chona R. Echavez
Reproductive Health
A Situation Analysis (SA) was conducted in seven local government health centers as part of a larger project studying the feasibility of integrating RTI services within the existing Family Planning/Reproductive Health Program of the Department of Health (DOH). The SA was part of a series of baseline activities conducted by the Family Planning Operations Research and Training Project as part of its study on Integrating RTI Management in Local Government Unit Health Centers. It was conducted by Population Council, Manila, for the DOH. Participating health centers were located in a large and highly urbanized community, a medium-sized city, and two …
Postabortion Care Services In Kenya: Baseline Findings Of An Operations Research Study, Julie Solo, Deborah L. Billings
Postabortion Care Services In Kenya: Baseline Findings Of An Operations Research Study, Julie Solo, Deborah L. Billings
Reproductive Health
In Kenya, as throughout the world, the health consequences of unsafe abortion for women of reproductive age are significant. Hospital-based studies in Nairobi have shown that unsafely induced abortion accounts for as much as 35 percent of pregnancy-related mortality and at least 50 percent of hospitals’ gynecological admissions. The concept of postabortion care (emergency treatment, postabortion family planning counseling and services, links between emergency abortion treatment services and comprehensive reproductive health care) has gained wide acceptance as one model of providing comprehensive care to women suffering from abortion complications. Integration of these three components is rarely found in public health …

Study Of Adolescents: Dynamics Of Perception, Attitude, Knowledge And Use Of Reproductive Health Care, Syed Jahangeer Haider, Shamsun Nehar Saleh, Nahid Kamal, Alan Gray
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Knowledge, perceptions, and behavior related to reproductive health (RH) and sexual matters underlie all the conditions that family planning/maternal and child health (FP/MCH) programs address, thus these are important issues for FP researchers, population policymakers, and service providers. To achieve significant levels of fertility or mortality declines, participation of adolescents in reproductive health programs, including FP/MCH, is essential. Studies focusing on sexuality and attitudes of adolescents on RH, and the interacting influences of family, community, and the social sector developmental programs (health, FP/MCH, education, women’s development) would give useful revelations. This report presents findings from a study that was designed …

Integrando La Sexualidad En La Planificación Familiar: La Experiencia De Tres Proyectos De Vih/Ets En América Latina Y El Caribe, Julie Becker, Elizabeth Leitman, Mahmoud F. Fathalla
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Reproductive Control In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman
Reproductive Control In South Africa, Carol E. Kaufman
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The controversial state-sponsored family planning program officially began in South Africa in 1974. Although the government did not implement the program on a racial basis, the program was widely believed to be linked with white fears of growing black numbers, and was attacked by detractors as a program of social and political control. In spite of the hostile environment, black women’s use of services steadily increased. Using historical and anthropological evidence, this paper delineates the links between the social and political context of racial domination and individual fertility behavior. It argues that the quantitative ‘success’ of the family planning program …

Transition To Adulthood Of Female Factory Workers: Some Evidence From Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Ian Diamond, Ruchira Tabassum Naved, Margaret Newby
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The rapidly expanding sector of garment manufacturing for export is unusual for Bangladesh in that it employs young, unmarried women in large numbers. This paper examines data from a study on garment workers in Bangladesh to explore the implications of work for the early socialization of young women. For the first time young women are given an alternative to lives where they move directly from childhood into adulthood through early marriage and childbearing. Work creates a period of transition as contrasted with the abrupt assumption of adult roles at very young ages that marriage and childbearing mandate. It is argued …
Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom
Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Both men and women make important contributions to the production of children, yet demographic studies of fertility and family planning have tended to focus on women alone. This paper traces the development of demography’s emphasis on women and describes how the limitations of its theoretical approaches to reproduction and empirical neglect of men have been mutually reinforcing. The paper is structured around four aims: 1) to describe why men have had a relatively low profile as subjects in demographic research on reproduction; 2) to explain growing interest in studying men’s roles; 3) to evaluate existing research on men in developing …
Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy [Arabic], Michael P. Todaro
Urbanization, Unemployment And Migration In Africa: Theory And Policy [Arabic], Michael P. Todaro
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
During the past three decades, the cities of the developing world in general, and of Africa in particular, have witnessed a remarkable and in many ways unprecedented demographic growth spurt. Despite some slowdown in rates of increase in the past few years as a result of falling wages, contracting social services, and changing demographic trends, contemporary urban areas remain the growth poles of economic progress and the lightning rods of political and social unrest. Nowhere is this dilemma more visible nor the resulting problems more intractable than in the crowded cities of sub-Saharan Africa, where projections of urban population growth …
Population And Poverty: A Review And Restatement, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Population And Poverty: A Review And Restatement, Geoffrey Mcnicoll
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Worldwide in the 1990s over one billion persons are estimated to have a purchasing power of below a dollar per day, the conventional demarcation of “absolute poverty.” Other dimensions of poverty, extending beyond income measures to encompass a person’s broader capabilities and social functioning, are less empirically accessible. Poverty is commonly thought to be associated with high fertility and rapid population growth (regionally, South Asia and Africa have the highest poverty rates), but that view finds little support in the extensive statistical research literature on population and poverty. However, a clear-cut depiction of such an institutionally contingent relationship is not …
Empowering The Next Generation: Girls Of The Maqattam Garbage Settlement [Arabic], Marie Assaad, Judith Bruce
Empowering The Next Generation: Girls Of The Maqattam Garbage Settlement [Arabic], Marie Assaad, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This edition of SEEDS explores the challenge of extending earning opportunities and access to valued social roles to young women in the garbage settlement of Maqattam, Egypt. This edition furthermore underscores the degree to which livelihood programs must confront the social circumstances—such as health, marriage, and cultural and family traditions—that play a major role in shaping girls' current and future economic prospects.
Demythifying Multicultural Education: Social Semiotics As A Tool Of Critical Pedagogy, Stephanie Urso Spina
Demythifying Multicultural Education: Social Semiotics As A Tool Of Critical Pedagogy, Stephanie Urso Spina
Publications and Research
This article discusses the assumptions and curricular implications of a social semiotic approach to education. Semiotics refers to the meaning we make with language as well as other objects. events, and actions. Social semiotics emphasizes the social, cultural, historic, and political contexts that shape that meaning. A social semiotic approach to education can help teachers and teacher educators to deconstruct the reproduction of class, politicize the ideology of colonialism, and overcome the inequities they engender. By providing a way to challenge selectively reproduced cultural politics, social semiotics provides a way to reconstruct and democratize schools and society.
Stochastic Modeling Of Active Life And Its Expectancy, Douglas A. Wolf, Sarah B. Laditka
Stochastic Modeling Of Active Life And Its Expectancy, Douglas A. Wolf, Sarah B. Laditka
Center for Policy Research
The concept of “active” (or “disability-free”) life, and its average value, has proven to be a useful index of public health and of quality of life for populations. A question of great interest in recent years is whether recent trends towards longer life expectancy have been accompanied by comparable increases in active life expectancy. Past research on patterns and trends of active and “inactive” life has focused almost exclusively on the expectancy—or, the average value—of years spent with and without disability. This measure is useful for actuarial calculations, for example analysis of the insurance value of programs that provide long-term …
