Runaway/Thrownaway Children: National Estimates And Characteristics, Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlak

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The words “missing child” call to mind tragic and frightening kidnappings reported in the national news. But a child can be missing for many reasons, and the problem of missing children is far more complex than the headlines suggest. Getting a clear picture of how many children become missing—and why—is an important step in addressing the problem. This series of Bulletins provides that clear picture by summarizing findings from the Second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART–2). The series offers national estimates of missing children based on surveys of households, juvenile residential facilities, and law …

Foreign Government Complicity In Human Trafficking: A Review Of The State Department's "2002 Trafficking In Persons Report", U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On International Relations

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Smith-Gejdenson Act provides a comprehensive plan for putting an end to modern-day slavery. A key component of this plan is the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report. This report is intended to inform the President and the Congress about which foreign governments are making serious efforts to combat the most egregious forms of trafficking in persons—the buying and selling of women and children into the international sex industry, and the trafficking of men, women, and children alike into slavery and involuntary servitude—and which governments are failing to make such efforts.

At today’s hearing, the Committee will hear …

2002 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Over the past year, at least 700,000, and possibly as many as four million men women and children worldwide were bought, sold, transported and held against their will in slave-like conditions. In this modern form of slavery, known as “trafficking in persons,” traffickers use threats, intimidation and violence to force victims to engage in sex acts or to labor under conditions comparable to slavery for the traffickers’ financial gain. Women, children and men are trafficked into the international sex trade for the purposes of prostitution, sex tourism and other commercial sexual services and into forced labor situations in sweatshops, construction …

Testing The Promise Of The Churches: Income Inequality In The Opportunity To Learn Civic Skills In Christian Congregations, Philip Schwadel Jan 2002

Testing The Promise Of The Churches: Income Inequality In The Opportunity To Learn Civic Skills In Christian Congregations, Philip Schwadel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Political researchers point to church activities as a major avenue for lower-class individuals to learn the civic skills necessary for many forms of political participation, the skills that higher-status individuals learn through education and occupation. This article tests this theory through multilevel analyses of the effects of both individual income and average congregational income on three measures of participation in church activities and organizations that offer participants the opportunity to learn and exercise civic skills. The results show that churches are only slightly stratified when it comes to members’ participation in charity, public policy, or social justice organizations within the …

Familial And “On-The-Street” Risk Factors Associated With Alcohol Use Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Barbara J. Mcmorris, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Objective: This study investigated factors associated with alcohol use among homeless and runaway adolescents, using a risk amplification model.
Method: Homeless and runaway adolescents (N = 536, 60% female) were recruited and interviewed by outreach workers directly on the streets, in shelters and in drop-in centers in four Midwestern states. The average age was 16 years; ages ranged from 12 to 22.
Results: Parent alcohol problems were indirectly linked to adolescent drinking through familial abuse and its relationship to deviant peers, time on own and risky subsistence behaviors. Parent alcohol problems also predicted offspring alcohol use through parental rejection and …

Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman On The Symbolism And Sociology Of Clothing, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In The Dress of Women, Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents a nonfiction analysis of the symbolism and sociology of clothing. Originally published in Gilman's monthly journal, The Forerunner, in 1915, The Dress of Women was serialized, month by month, at the same time as Gilman's well-known novel, Herland, and a year prior to Gilman's companion work, With Her In Ourland: Sequel to Herland. The Dress of Women, published here for the first time in book form, is a lively, nonfiction guidebook to many of the gender issues presented in Gilman's Herland/Ourland saga and provides Gilman's intellectual, philosophical, and sociological insight into …

Deviant Behavior And Victimization Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kevin A. Yoder, Ana Mari Cauce, Matt Paradise

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study used a high-risk population of runaway and homeless adolescents to investigate the effects of history of caretaker abuse and deviant subsistence strategies on victimization among adolescents. Based on a multisite sample of 974 homeless and runaway adolescents, logistic regression models were used first to examine factors predicting involvement in sexual and nonsexual deviant subsistence strategies and then to investigate the effects of deviant subsistence strategies on physical and sexual victimization when adolescents were on the streets. Results indicated that when controlling for all other factors, including histories of physical and sexual maltreatment in families of origin, street behaviors, …

Charitable Contributions In Rural Nebraska: A Culture Of Giving, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Nebraskans have a history of being charitable. This is important for the future of rural communities since many of them rely on local donations for their civic improvement projects and expansion of capital for new business development. Given that, do rural Nebraskans contribute annually to charitable causes? How much of their contributions go to their local community?

This report details 3,199 responses to the 2001 Nebraska Rural Poll, the sixth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions regarding their charitable giving. For all questions, comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, e.g., comparisons …

Restructuring The Farm Bill: Opinions Of Rural Nebraskans, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

In this congressional session, there is expected to be much discussion about reworking the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (commonly referred to as the Freedom to Farm Act). This act is set to expire in 2002. Thus, new legislation will likely begin to be written this session. Federal farm policy has significant implications for all of rural Nebraska. Given this importance, how do rural Nebraskans feel the farm bill should be structured? How do they feel about farm program payments? Do they support payment limitations? How do they feel about other specific provisions that could be included …

Family Relationship Histories, Intergenerational Relationship Quality, And Depressive Affect Among Rural Elderly People, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kimberly A. Tyler Jun 2001

Family Relationship Histories, Intergenerational Relationship Quality, And Depressive Affect Among Rural Elderly People, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kimberly A. Tyler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Based on a sample of matched adult children and aging parents in the rural Mid¬west, this study examined the effects of family relationship history on depressive symptoms among elderly parents. The study used reports from both adult chil¬dren and aging parents regarding intergenerational affectional solidarity and re¬lationship strain. Aging parents reported levels of depressed affect. Adult chil¬dren’s recalled early relationships with their parents were associated with elderly parents’ reports of depressed affect through the effects of early family relation¬ships on contemporary relationships. Reports of early relationships and contem¬porary relationships were separated by 5 years. It is suggested that family rela¬tionship …

Book Review: Weaving Work And Motherhood By Anita Ilta Garey, Julia Mcquillan May 2001

Book Review: Weaving Work And Motherhood By Anita Ilta Garey, Julia Mcquillan

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Weaving Work and Motherhood is an engaging challenge to conventional “orientation” approaches to work or motherhood, offering instead the metaphor of weaving. Beginning with the experiences of 37 mothers employed at a hospital, Anita Ilta Garey’s goal is to understand “what it means to be a worker with children and a mother at work.”

Garey favors the metaphor of weaving as a way to “step back and view the whole, to think of the fabric of a life, the strength of the weave, and the intricacy of design. It reminds us not to get lost in the close examination …

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Non-Metropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko Mar 2001

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Non-Metropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This paper examines the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans. Data from the 1998 Nebraska Rural Poll were analyzed at two levels. First, the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans were compared to those of the general population of the United States. Second, the relationships between the attributes of the respondents’ current community and their residential preferences were examined. Current community size, the social attributes of the community and evaluations of local community services were all determined to be important influences on residential preferences. The findings illustrate the possible positive impact on rural Great Plains communities of enhancing social interaction and creatively …

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

This study examines whether the general level and rate of change of fatigue over time is different for those rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with and those without a history of affective disorder (AD). Four hundred fifteen RA patients from a national panel had yearly telephone interviews to obtain fatigue and distress reports, and a one-time semistructured assessment of the history of depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Growth-curve analysis was used to capture variations in initial fatigue levels and changes in fatigue over 7 years for those with and without a history. RA patients with a history of major AD reported …

2000 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State Jan 2001

2000 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons is a fundamental and crucially important challenge in the areas of human rights and law enforcement. Based on reliable estimates, as the Congress has noted, at least 700,000 persons, especially women and children, are trafficked each year across international borders. Some observers estimate that the number may be significantly higher. Victims are forced to toil in sweatshops, construction sites, brothels, and fields. Deprived of the enjoyment of their human rights, many victims are subjected to threats against their person and family, violence, horrific living conditions, and dangerous workplaces. Some victims have answered advertisements believing that they will …
