Community Power In Humboldt County: A Reputational Approach, Jerome Matthew Bearbower Jan 1990

Community Power In Humboldt County: A Reputational Approach, Jerome Matthew Bearbower

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The primary objective of this project is to better understand the feasibility of utilizing variables such as population numbers, economic diversity, cultural diversity, and the structure of government as measuring tools for identifying community power distributions within a larger pluralist/elitist framework. This is significant for two reasons. Theoretically, current generalizations in the field can be scientifically tested within an empirical framework. Practically, for those individuals/groups who are working towards social change, an informed picture of leadership distributions can be tantamount to effective participation within the community policy process. Methodologically, this study will utilize the reputational approach, originally proposed by Floyd …

Plant Shutdown/Layoff And Social Support Interventions, Mitchell Swatez Jan 1986

Plant Shutdown/Layoff And Social Support Interventions, Mitchell Swatez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In 1986 it is generally accepted that national economic conditions have improved over recessionary conditions which occurred in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Decline in the manufacturing or "smokestack" sector of the economy is not the major headline or concern that it was a few short years ago. Substantial numbers of workers have been recalled in construction, automotive, aircraft and other industries in the heavy manufacturing sector, demonstrating again the cyclical nature of these industries. Hard times are not over however in the economy — a substantial number of industries, geographic regions, communities and workers are still being impacted …

Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella Jan 1983

Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The history of intellectual debate has long included a basic conflict among those who seek to understand the way that mankind knows, or tries to gain knowledge. Knowing has typically been addressed from one of two perspectives; either analytically or intuitively. Analytic, outer knowing is based on the idea that a reasonable and logical examination of the variables will eventually produce a clear and total picture of the knowledge being presented or investigated. Intuitive, inner knowing has a different perspective, and seeks to know a thing sympathetically, understanding its nature by insight.

Equal Employment Opportunity And Affirmative Action In Humboldt County Federal Contracting Private Sector Industries, Peter J. C. Veenhuyzen Jan 1978

Equal Employment Opportunity And Affirmative Action In Humboldt County Federal Contracting Private Sector Industries, Peter J. C. Veenhuyzen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the field of Sociology, studies are continually initiated to ascertain basic social processes integral to an area under research. As these processes are isolated and identified, their function can be understood and related to a larger social spectrum. In the field of personnel management, the predominant quest has been to screen applicants for their desirability as future employees. Some of the criteria used are: 1) amount of experience in the area of the job opening; 2) quantity of formal education in the given area; 3) past job performance recommendations; 4) amount of previous job absenteeism; 5) ability to handle …

A Sociological Study Of Native American Indians In Higher Education, Robert George Lake Jr. Jan 1974

A Sociological Study Of Native American Indians In Higher Education, Robert George Lake Jr.

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The decision to undertake research on the topic under consideration came from a number of reasons. To begin with, the author is of Native American (Seneca-Cherokee) descent; secondly, he is the Ethnic Affairs Administrator at Humboldt State University responsible for initiating and developing Indian and other ethnic minority programs; and thirdly, he is the Region I Chairman of the California Indian Education Association. This unique cultural-educational background has placed him in a position to recognize that educational leaders in American Indian communities are handicapped by lack of information about higher education practices while colleges and universities know very little about …
