Your Voice ~ Your Choice Coalition Transportation Committee Project, Dorothea Lynne Bott
Your Voice ~ Your Choice Coalition Transportation Committee Project, Dorothea Lynne Bott
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This project was approached from a participant observer’s standpoint. It includes my experience and analysis of the group process involved in making changes in local transportation services. The project focused on transportation for senior citizens and younger people with disabilities. We were able to form a cohesive group of service providers and consumers of services, and we were able to influence public policy on the local level to some extent. We were also able to increase public awareness of the complexity of obtaining transportation in Humboldt County if a person happens to have a disability and a limited income. The …
Discovering Democracy: Grassroots Organizations And Strategies Of Mobilization, Adrian Chevraux-Fitzhugh
Discovering Democracy: Grassroots Organizations And Strategies Of Mobilization, Adrian Chevraux-Fitzhugh
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In order to create change, it is imperative that grassroots movements and organizations adopt effective mobilization strategies. This thesis will provide a model for how Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC) mobilizes citizens to action in a rural community. It will be argued that many of the mobilization strategies employed by DUHC can be applied by other grassroots organization across a variety of issues. Although DUHC is focused on undermining corporate power and the legitimacy of corporate personhood, their mobilization strategies can be a useful tool for very different types of organizations. Part of the DUHC mobilization model will include …
Social Change In The Emperor System, Keiko Mori
Social Change In The Emperor System, Keiko Mori
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The Emperors in Japan were considered as gods for the Japanese people until World War II ended. The Japanese worshiped the Emperors and obeyed whatever the orders were given in the Emperor’s name. However, under the Occupation of the Allied Powers led by General Douglas MacArthur, Emperor Hirohito’s role changed from ‘divine ruler’ to the ‘state symbol’ of Japan, He was not supposed to have any political power over the Japanese people, but his influence was still huge after the defeat. General MacArthur supported the Emperor system in Japan because the General believed, without Hirohito, Japan could not survive the …
Learning For Life: The Social And Academic Outcomes Of A Waldorf Education, Adriane S. Mozzini
Learning For Life: The Social And Academic Outcomes Of A Waldorf Education, Adriane S. Mozzini
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Waldorf schools are nationally and internationally federated institutions that provide kindergarten through twelfth grade educations. Created in Germany in 1919 during the Progressive Education Movement and existing in the United States since 1928, Waldorf schools use a true unit study approach integrating the arts into all areas of academic study, yet eschewing some of the standard facets of American education, such as standardized testing, most subject matter testing (in grades K-8), competition for grades, ability grouping and academic tracking, and the use of electronic technology (in grades K-8). Currently, 149 private Waldorf and 44 Waldorf-methods public charter schools serve over …
Zapatismo And Autonomous Social Movements: Reading The Communiqés Politically, Jordan Camp
Zapatismo And Autonomous Social Movements: Reading The Communiqés Politically, Jordan Camp
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study examines the Ejército Zapatista Liberación Nacional (EZLN) and Zapatista base communities contributions to an autonomous “revolutionary” theory and practice. The focus of this thesis is the evolution of Zapatismo as elaborated in the Zapatistas’ communiqués following the EZLN’s deceleration of war against the Mexican government on January 1, 1994, the same day that the North American Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico went into effect. This thesis investigates the Zapatistas’ communiqués as part of an effort to more fully engage their strategies of self-representation and articulation of a collective subject in which any number …
The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn
The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis represents a critical comparative and historical study of the challenges posed to the autonomy and sovereignty of the nation-state by the emerging transnational class structure in the current era of global accumulation. I examine key elements of modern state theory, contrasting them with class-based state theory. National models may be extended to help illustrate transnational relationships. Transnational institutions, components of the transnational state apparatus, serve as examples of the means by which this transnational capitalist class formulates and implements policy. But this transnational structure is not stable; it suffers from the very contradictions immanent to capitalism itself. I …
The Equip Model And The New Horizons Program, Yi-Lang Chao
The Equip Model And The New Horizons Program, Yi-Lang Chao
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The New Horizon Program mainly offers services to juveniles to correct their deviant behaviors and cognitive distortions, including substance abuse assessment and counseling, anger management, medication support, individual and group counseling, mental health counseling, and social skill development training. The EQUIP model is the main element in the in-custody service of the New Horizons Program. We already know that the EQUIP program (1996 in Ohio State) was effective; however, after being implemented in Humboldt County, does the EQUIP model still can provide the New Horizons Program positive functions and assistance? CAFAS and YSR were adopted as indicators to measure intermediate …
Utilizing Principles Of Transformative Mediation In The Development Of The Redwood Regional Watershed Center, Paula Fitzgerald Yoon
Utilizing Principles Of Transformative Mediation In The Development Of The Redwood Regional Watershed Center, Paula Fitzgerald Yoon
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In the twenty first century, mediation and watershed management are each paradigm-shifting tools for our globalized society. Mediation is the process that creates a structure allowing parties in conflict to resolve their own differences. Transformative mediation is a form of mediation that has the capacity to transform the character of both individual disputants and society as a whole. This project applies transformative mediation as a process to promote the growth of watershed management and restoration. Transformative mediation was used by a non-profit organization, the Redwood Regional Watershed Center (RRWC), to bring all parties together to work on education, interpretation and …
Globalization, Biodiversity, And Resistance In México: Deconstructing Plan Puebla-Panamá, Michael Stantón Levy
Globalization, Biodiversity, And Resistance In México: Deconstructing Plan Puebla-Panamá, Michael Stantón Levy
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis examines the relationships between market liberalization and social inequality, poverty and biodiversity in México. A narrative history of political, socioeconomic and ecological conditions in southeastern México uses both statistical analysis and in-depth interviews to explain economic liberalization policies in México’s northern Border States, central interior and southern regions. The southern region bordering Guatemala paradoxically is most impoverished; however, vast natural resources make it one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Plan Puebla-Panamá, México’s proposal to integrate markets with infrastructure from the southern state of Puebla to Panamá in Central America, is broken down into its key …
Prostitution As Legitimate Work: An Analysis Of Sex Work In America, Nicholas J. Osborne
Prostitution As Legitimate Work: An Analysis Of Sex Work In America, Nicholas J. Osborne
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis investigates the proposition that prostitution should be viewed as legitimate work in order to minimize the abuse and exploitation directed at sex workers by clients, pimps, and those engaged in trafficking. This thesis argues that paid sex work should be viewed as a public health and social welfare problem, not a criminal act that is socially constructed along rigid moral boundaries. Evaluation of the effectiveness of legal sex work in promoting safer sex practices is included in the thesis. Additionally, a legal analysis of various policies and legislation proposed and developed in relation to prostitution and the different …
A Sociological Theory Of Depression: An Integrated Approach To Optimism And Pessimism, Toward Effective Resolution Of A Societal Problem, Jenny R. Shayani
A Sociological Theory Of Depression: An Integrated Approach To Optimism And Pessimism, Toward Effective Resolution Of A Societal Problem, Jenny R. Shayani
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In using symbolic interactionist theory to explore depression as an epidemic in our society, this study uses the concept of "reality construction" to show that cultivating an optimistic explanatory style may reduce susceptibility to depression. It is my intention to use a symbolic interactionist approach of the concept of the "mind" to aid in identification of the reality construction of the depressed individual. The Psychological Social Psychology concepts of attribution style and explanatory style are useful in understanding optimistic and pessimistic perspectives of reality construction. This thesis provides a micro-level link to the idea that an optimistic explanatory style reduces …
Social Perception Of Working Women In Benin: Gender Analysis, Hermine G. Amoussou
Social Perception Of Working Women In Benin: Gender Analysis, Hermine G. Amoussou
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In the workplace, women workers generally face problems such as inequality, discrimination and sexual harassment. This research allows me to identify, explore, and analyze the socio-professional factors that prevent women’s full involvement and their promotion in the workplace in Benin. The research presents an analysis of perceptions of working women and the effects of these attitudes on the professional life of women. It also considers the effectiveness and pertinence of gender awareness in the workforce in Benin. What people of Benin think and say about working women, their comprehension of women’s professions and the behaviors that these perceptions induce, on …
Working Butch: Lesbian Gender Nonconformity In The Workplace, Jacelyn G. Macedo
Working Butch: Lesbian Gender Nonconformity In The Workplace, Jacelyn G. Macedo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Butch lesbians are at a high risk for discrimination in the workplace because their appearance and manner signal gender nonconformity and make their lesbian sexuality visible. This exploratory research presents the results of life and work history interviews with ten self-identified butches. The women interviewed encounter unique challenges in the workplace because they do not meet the gender standards expected from women, and they are visibly out lesbians. Interviews with these butches explore the relationships between masculinity and butch identity, how race and class influence the participants’ butch identity, how this identity influences their occupational choices, and their current treatment …
When The Abused Fight Back: Analysis Of Victim Precipitated Trigger Response, Jodi Kateiva
When The Abused Fight Back: Analysis Of Victim Precipitated Trigger Response, Jodi Kateiva
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This research seeks to explore the nature of the victim precipitated trigger response mechanism in effect when the abused fights back, resulting in the killing or attempted killing of the abuser. The earliest work in this field done by sociologist Marvin Wolfgang in the early 1950's took place in Philadelphia. Wolfgang sought to explore what he termed "victim precipitation." More recently, Angela Browne continued this research in When Battered Women Kill (1987) where Browne examines the patterns of domestic violence against women and events that lead to homicides of the abuser by the abused. This research will be the first …

This research focuses on a theoretical analysis of quantitative data collected through surveys sent to the federally recognized Indian tribes in California. The research data set was collected by the primary investigator in collaboration with the Center for Indian Community Development. The California tribes were surveyed in regards to the types of infrastructure positions held in the following seventeen sectors: government, enrollment, natural resources, education, social services, land/realty, human resources, financing, health, computer department, community services, economic development and planning, legal/judicial, public works, culture/language, gaming and tribal enterprises. The data was quantified and analyzed in context to Max Weber’s theory …
Exploring Alcohol Use Among University Students In Social Context: The Impacts Of Binge Drinking, Connectedness To Drinking Peers, And Perceived Peer Support On Consequences Of Alcohol Consumption, Will Henington Tift
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study examines the extent to which frequency of binge drinking, Connectedness to Drinking Peers, Perceived Peer Support, class level, and gender may predict Consequences of Alcohol Consumption among university students. The Core Institute’s Campus Survey of Alcohol and Other Drug Norms was administered at Humboldt State University in the Spring of 1999. Consequences of Alcohol Consumption (CAC) were measured using a one-page questionnaire appended to the Core instrument. Total sample size was 667 students. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that college students who binge drink are much more likely to experience CAC (ß = .515, p< .001). In contrast, students who have strong peer support are much less likely to experience consequences (ß = -.254, p< .001). Upperclassmen and, to some extent, students who have close ties to drinking peers are also less likely to incur CAC (p = -.089, p< .01 and ß = -.067, p< .05, respectively). The inclusion of gender did not add strength to the statistical predictability of CAC, likely because gender is highly correlated with binge drinking.
Rv Tourism In Humboldt County, California: An Exploratory Case Study, Richard M. Jennings
Rv Tourism In Humboldt County, California: An Exploratory Case Study, Richard M. Jennings
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Humboldt County, California represents a unique area in the United States. Known throughout much of the country for its ancient redwoods, this area has been suffering economically due to a diminishing logging industry. Tourism seems to be a popular developmental strategy. However, not much attention has been given towards what types of tourists that are already coming to the area. RV tourists frequent an area within Redwood National and State Parks known as Freshwater Lagoon Spit and contribute to the local economy. Plans to close this area to campers may negatively affect the economy of the surrounding area. The following …
A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman
A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
People with disabilities are the most oppressed social group in the world. According to some estimates, 500 million people are victims of disability oppression. People with disabilities, as well as society, have undergone radical changes over the last 30 years. Activists, legislators, academics, and families of people with disabilities, have been largely responsible in pointing out the social realities of the disability experience. People with disabilities continue to experience a tremendous amount of discrimination however, and the stigma of being a person with a disability is slow to fade. The current thesis surveys the literature on disability, demonstrating the manner …
Training Mediators To Be Reflective Practitioners, Christina Gerene Begley
Training Mediators To Be Reflective Practitioners, Christina Gerene Begley
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Mediators, like many other professionals, draw from a broad skill set that includes a variety of communication, listening and analytical proficiencies. While many training programs emphasize the basic theoretical and methodological considerations of competent practice, few - if any - spend time working with new mediators to develop the capacity to be continuous learners. The ability to reflect critically on one’s own professional practice, both through self evaluation and peer assessment, has been a missing component to effectively training mediators. Without critically analyzing one’s own practice, the ability of a professional mediator to work for the best interest of the …

Five Cases Of African Revolution—A Comparative Historical Study Of Successful Anti-Colonial Revolutions, Fergus John October Breck
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is a comparative historical study of successful anti-colonial revolutions. The idea is to determine what shared social conditions in these revolutions contributed to their success. The thesis includes an extensive review of the literature on revolutions, as well as a section devoted to defining the term ‘revolution’ as it will be used. A detailed method of analysis for the cases is offered and an application of the process is presented following a section devoted to the relevant history of each selected case. The broad themes, for analysis are then presented and analyzed in depth to determine whether or …
A Teacher's Guide To Genocide In California History, Thomas William Hunnicutt
A Teacher's Guide To Genocide In California History, Thomas William Hunnicutt
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
It is the purpose of this teacher’s guide to provide educators with a conceptual and historical framework for interpreting a specific aspect of Indian/white relationships in Northern California during the years of 1840 to 1880. During this period of time the Indians of California suffered a dramatic reduction in their population as a result of disease, mass killings, kidnappings, relocations, and the destruction of the material resources necessary for cultural continuance. It is the conclusion of historians such as Jack Norton (1997), Rupert and Jeannette Costo (1995), Lynwood Carranco and Estle Beard (1981), Russel Thornton (1987), and others that California …

Black Women At The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Class: How These Issues Affect Our Lives And How We Deal With Them, Lael E. Washington
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
A number of prominent black feminist writers including bell hooks (1990), Audre Lorde (1984), Angela Davis (1998), and Deborah King (1995) discuss “multiplicity” or “intersectionality.” These terms describe the concept that black women in the United States do not simply experience the effects of race plus gender plus class; rather, black women deal with racism multiplied by sexism multiplied by classism. Similarly, black women are socially located at the intersection of race, class, and gender. In this study, I focus on how racism and sexism impact black women’s lives. In an open-ended survey, I asked 14 black women about their …
Designing A Parent-Teen Mediation Program For The Eureka, Arcata, Mckinleyville Area, Robyn Lee Schroeder
Designing A Parent-Teen Mediation Program For The Eureka, Arcata, Mckinleyville Area, Robyn Lee Schroeder
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Interpersonal conflict appears throughout one's life and experience however, the conflict felt most intensely and most difficult to avoid is that between parent and child - often accentuated during the adolescent years. While therapy remains a viable option for dealing with parent-child conflict, there exists a segment of the population whose family conflict may be alleviated with less intensive intervention. In Humboldt County, as elsewhere, there exists a need for swift, effective assistance in family problem-solving with a focus on building working agreements and teaching parents and their adolescent children to deal constructively with conflict. This project will work to …
Surf Like A Girl: Women, Identity, And Representation In Surf Culture, Elizabeth Anne Bennett
Surf Like A Girl: Women, Identity, And Representation In Surf Culture, Elizabeth Anne Bennett
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
As an institution, gender is one of the most influential forces that determines the ways people relate to each other and the manner in which they organize their lives. Over the past decades, a body of work has arisen to address gender as it relates to sport and overtly feminist analysis of sport continues to grow. This thesis explores women's status in the subculture of surfing and seeks to determine the degree to which these women experience marginalization, as well as the various forms that this marginalization takes. I conduct a content analysis of Surfer and Wahine magazines to illustrate …
Human Agency And The Process Of Social Change In The Religious Structure Of A Traditional Society, Jonathan Mermis-Cava
Human Agency And The Process Of Social Change In The Religious Structure Of A Traditional Society, Jonathan Mermis-Cava
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is an examination of human agency within the process of social change as it has been displayed by the members of a traditional society. It is based on participant observation data that was collected between 1995-97 when the author served as a Peace Corps Volunteer living amongst a tribe of maroons, known as Saramakans, deep in the rainforest of South America. Exploring the assumption that changes in traditional societies have been forced upon them, this thesis examines the transformations that have occurred in the religious structure of the Saramakan tribe. From a social constructionist theoretical viewpoint, data suggests …
The Internet As A Source Of Informal Social Control: Social Support In Pedophile Online Culture, Teelynn T. Mauney
The Internet As A Source Of Informal Social Control: Social Support In Pedophile Online Culture, Teelynn T. Mauney
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is an examination of pedophile use of the World Wide Web as a source of social support. I conduct a content analysis of pedophile Web sites that advocate sexual contact between men and boys. The themes on these sites are examined and compared to the themes found in stage one of my research program, which analyzed four of the eleven sites in the pedophile Web site sampling frame. This monograph draws on Mirkin’s (1999) theoretical framework that states that pedophiles are in stage one of a battle to legitimize their sexual orientation. This study finds that pedophile sites …
The Economic Re-Emergence Of China Within The World System, Daniel Sarabia
The Economic Re-Emergence Of China Within The World System, Daniel Sarabia
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Through the course of history nation-states have undergone immense socioeconomic transformations as they shuffle positions in the world economy. In tracing the development of the global economy we can see that the accumulation of capital is not a new phenomenon, but a continuous part of human history. This global economic system emerged in Afro-Eurasia and can be traced back a millennium before European hegemony. Long before European economic dominance, the global economy was centered in Asia with its hegemonic center in China. This thesis will bring to light the historical presence of Asia within the world system and argue that …
A Unifying Approach For Researching Disasters: Disrupted Social Logic And Triangulating Interdisciplinary Methods, Andrew J. Hund
A Unifying Approach For Researching Disasters: Disrupted Social Logic And Triangulating Interdisciplinary Methods, Andrew J. Hund
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis develops a meso-level theory of disrupted social logic and suggests triangulation for its study. This theory addresses the inadequate definition, classification, and theoretical foundations of disaster research. The lack of control groups and researchers’ reliance on single methods are also addressed. Based on over 400 academic articles, books, published reports, and non-verbal communications, from 2500 BC to present, analytical induction was employed to develop the theory of disrupted social logic. A best evidence synthesis was also used to examine seventy-two proposed or in practice disaster research methodologies. Implications of this interdisciplinary theoretical approach are discussed. A new historical …
Empowerment Through Dancing?: Perceptions Of Occupational Power And Control Among Female Exotic Dancers, Patricia A. Hernandez
Empowerment Through Dancing?: Perceptions Of Occupational Power And Control Among Female Exotic Dancers, Patricia A. Hernandez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this thesis is to examine female sex workers and issues of power. My investigation focuses specifically on female exotic dancers and whether they perceive power in their work. The question I intend to answer is do exotic dancers see themselves as having power in relation to the men they dance for? Drawing on both feminist theory and women’s experience in the sex industry, I expect to discover whether or not strippers gain a sense of power from their work, whether they feel they have control over the conditions of their work, and how power and control can …

Making Genes: A Pilot Study Of The Social Construction Of Biotechnology, Christopher B. Ganchoff
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Biotechnology, the duplication of natural processes with artificial procedures and objects, is reshaping the way we see ourselves, and the world around us. Recent advances in genetic engineering have resulted in unprecedented hypotheses about the power and efficacy of the human genetic code. The entire human genetic structure is in the process of being mapped out, and this project should be completed within the next ten years. The Human Genome Project (HGP) represents are qualitative leap in modern science; it is a trans-national enterprise that promises to simultaneously release humanity from the grip of a multitude of physiological pathologies, and …
