The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom

This thesis outlines the international diffusion and growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church. A model of Mormon spatial diffusion in foreign countries is developed incorporating both a functional and spatial perspective. The functional perspective includes supply and demand variables which influence the rate of growth of the Mormon Church in a country. The functional perspective is not fully explored in the thesis. The spatial perspective which the study concentrates on seeks to show a general spatial pattern related to the spread of the Church within countries.

The Bridge

This is the story of my Danish grandfather whom I never

knew except through infrequent stories from my father. I

asked my father Aaron to write a family history about his

dad, but he never did. I never found out why he wouldn't. I

wondered about my Thisted grandparents before and after

both my parents died, so I decided to piece the puzzle

together as best I could, while several uncles and aunts were

still alive.

Carl Hansen's Concept Of Christmas, David Iversen

The Bridge

As one of the major Danish-American immigrant writers

of the early 20th century, Carl Hansen wrote short stories,

sketches, and one novel, co-founded (with Oscar W. Lund)

The Christmas journal Julegranen, and published Dansk Jul i

Amerika in 1909. This paper will focus on three stories,

published in Landmrend: Fortrellinger by Dansk Boghandel

in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1908, which have Christmas as a

theme. The three stories are: For 30 aar siden (30 Years

Ago"), Bowlegged Joe ("Bowlegged Joe"), and Gamle Hans

Nielsen's sidste Jul ("Old Hans Nielsen's Last Christmas").

In the spring of 1978, Arizona Quarterly published what

was to be the last of Sophus Keith Winther's scholarly

articles. Entitled, "The Emigrant Theme," this essay in many

ways was a summation of Winther's thoughts, not only regarding

the experience of Scandinavian-Americans as told in

literature, but more importantly of his reflections regarding

the whole of human experience. For him, emigration was the

great human story, stretching from the dawn of humankind

in the Olduvai Gorge to a foreboding present. It was the

story of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness; it was the

myth of the American westward movement. …

My Parents' Lives, Hazel R. Morse

The Bridge

Scandinavians settled with those of their own kind and

language, being drawn by relatives and friends who had

gone before them, but also through newspapers circulated

among them. Den Danske Pioneer was widely read among

Danes and may well have been the source of information

about the settling of northeastern Montana. Mr. E. F.

Madsen, an immigrant and intellectual who had made a

scouting trip to that area about 1905 urged other Danes to

settle together and establish a Danish colony.

Pornography And Premarital Sexual Activity Among Lds Teenagers, Mark A. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between several independent measures and premarital sexual activity among 1,393 LDS teenagers living along the east coast. Results indicate that among these LDS teens, exposure to pornography is strongly and significantly related to the probability of having engaged in premarital sex. This holds true even when controlling for peer influence, family structure, religiosity, gender, and age. Teens who were exposed to pornography (1 to 24 exposures) are 2.6 times more likely to have engaged in sex as compared to those who report no exposure to pornography. Sentenced To Be Hanged: The Tragic Story Of A Danish Immigrant, Peter D. Thomsen

The Bridge

Several years ago, Thorvald Hansen who was then in

charge of the Danish Immigrant Archives at Grand View

College, Des Moines, Iowa, asked if I would be interested in

writing the Peter Mathiasen story. I had previously told him

that in my childhood home I had heard bits and pieces of this

tale and that what I remembered most was how intensely it

was discussed by some of the immigrant people with whom

my parents associated. Little did I realize they were talking

about something that happened fifteen years before my

birth.

We departed from Limskov in Norup Sogn May 6, 1862,

to visit my sister, my brother-in-law, and my mother on my

home farm, and were there a couple of days before we took

leave of the whole family never to see them again in this life.

It was both a serious and a sad time.

Mary Dilberg's Memories, Charles Berg, Edel Berg

The Bridge

Mary Jensen Dilberg wrote the following account, in

English, in 1972. She was born in Aarhus, Denmark, on

November 4, 1891, sent out to earn her own living at age 12

and journeyed to America by herself in 1911 where she

spent time in Red Lodge, Montana, Ord, Nebraska, and

finally settled in Bothell, Washington, near Seattle, where

she spent most of her adult life except for a four year return

to Nebraska from 1919 to 1923.

For five years a group of researchers at Lousiana State Uinversity has been studying the effects of devlopmentally appropriate and developmentally inappropriate instructional practices on the behavior and achievement of young children. This paper begins with an overview of the extent of this work. The major arguments of the critics who have examined child development as the conceptual base for early childhood education and a construct of developmentally appropriate practice from the conceptualization view are then examined. Finally, the results of the LSU studies are summarized and a case is made in support of a construct of developmentally appropriate practice. …

The Effect Of The Postdivorce Relationship On Paternal Involvement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Constance R. Ahrons, Richard B. Miller

Longitudinal analyses of data from 64 pairs of former spouses indicate that the quality of their postdivorce relationship had a significant impact on fathers' involvement with their children. The strength of the influence declined over time, however, as the patterns of interaction in the reorganized binuclear family became more stable.

This paper reports on efforts to improve socioeconomic conditions and natural resource use in the El Pina lito community, department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. Students participating in supervised practical training at Centro Universitario de Oriente/Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (CUNORI) developed projects to address these issues. A general diagnostic instrument was created for this community to assist in the development of specific work projects. Students prepared community first-aid kits, agricultural activities with school children, and instructional sessions with farmers on how to prepare a family garden and efficiently manage domestic animals. This study explored the relationship between the developmental appropriateness of kindergarten classroom instruction and first-grade report card grade overall averages and average in reading, language, spelling, math, science, and social studies. the interactive roles that gender, SES, and kindergarten classroom type play in children's later achievement were also examined. The sample consisted of 166 first-grade children who had attended kindergarten classrooms with teaching practices identified as predominately developmentally appropriate or developmentally inappropriate. Findings indicated that first-graders from more appropriate kindergarten classrooms had higher reading averages than children from less appropriate kindergarten classrooms. Females had higher overall and subject area averages …
