The Modern Celebrity As A Unique Form Of Stratification, Ronald Althouse
The Modern Celebrity As A Unique Form Of Stratification, Ronald Althouse
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Social strata are horizontal layers of persons occupying positions with approximately equal access to social values of communities. Every society provides a unique arrangement of social strata with respect to one another. The modern mass society is no exception. Social positions of high rank resting on notoriety - the modern celebrity - are a foundation for prominence in a manner found nowhere else.

Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief
Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief
Sociology ETDs
This study describes the impact of social change upon the social structure of an Indian pueblo community in New Mexico. It is an investigation of the variant social forces and their conflicting impingements. Given a certain culture heritage, a particular historical background and a specific physical and social setting, what are the results of change upon the social system and upon the individual? To fit this inquiry into the empirical realm of facts, the community of San Juan pueblo was chosen, not so much because of its unique cultural configuration, as for the fact that it offered an opportune area …
Social Stratification In The Mass Society, Ronald Althouse
Social Stratification In The Mass Society, Ronald Althouse
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
In every society the possibility is continuously present that persons occupying approximately equivalent situations may find it expedient to cooperate rather than compete for the things which their societies make available in limited amounts to all. This possibility supplies the foundation for social stratification: the horizontal integration of social layers within whatever pyramids may arise in the social group as a whole. From this flows the frequent partial organization of preliterate societies into age and sex grades. Feudal societies of the world have been organized into estates. Contemporary capitalistic societies have been organized into classes. And finally, it seems that …

It will attempt to cover both the historical development and the present situation of segregation. Considerable emphasis will be placed upon the typology and construction of restrictive covenants. Housing Needs, Helen Michaelsen
Housing Needs, Helen Michaelsen
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
We have a responsibility to influence for good the fundamental character of American housing by stressing essentials. What is essential at the beginning; what, if anything at the end? Not home ownership-a house and garden for everyone-but standards of upkeep, ethics for tenants, minor improvements of present home conditions, order and intelligence in the utilization of space, adjusting the old house to meet present needs, making best use of what one already has.
A Concept Of The Elements Of Juvenile Criminality From A Sociological Aspect, Frank Burchard Smith
A Concept Of The Elements Of Juvenile Criminality From A Sociological Aspect, Frank Burchard Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The conditions that have prevailed in the United States in the last twenty-five years, compel thoughtful citizens to give careful attention to the disrespect for law that is so marked a characteristic of the period.
Crime and disorder are spread theoughout the length and breadth of the land. This produces problems which should be studies and solved for the good of society. The reaction which accompanies this evil will eventually cause social demoralization.
While attempting to treat this particular evil, social workers have been largely content to deal with surface conditions. Attention has been focused upon the symptom rather than …
