Suet For Winter Energy, H M. Gloster Jan 1961

Suet For Winter Energy, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WINTER weather is here again and the housewife will find she needs to provide the family with more substantial satisfying meals than in summer.

Foods which supply heat and energy are necessary to maintain the heat of the body. We get this from foods containing starch, sugar and fat.

That Prize Winning Fruit Cake, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IT is the ambition of most women to make the perfect fruit cake. Some try over and over again, hoping that some day they will produce a prize-winning cake.

Some Comments: School, Family, And The Social Worker, Leonard Schneiderman Jan 1961

Some Comments: School, Family, And The Social Worker, Leonard Schneiderman

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The previous paper has covered a good deal of ground. In the present discussion, taken from the point of view of a social worker, several reactions, ideas, and questions may be raised as a point of departure. One may, in fact, begin with the reference to the idea of subculture and its frequent misuse by social scientists. It seems reasonable that reference to deviant sub-culture often fails to take into account the fact that even deviant behavior may be structured and patterned according to the norms of the so-called majority.

This point has particular meaning in view of the fact …

Christmas Gifts To Make, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

Christmas Gifts To Make, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MOST of us appreciate a small, thoughtful gift much more than a"bought in a hurry" gift.

Here are a few suggestions for simple gifts that can be made, giving pleasure to both the maker and the recipient.

They are also useful for stocking stalls for fetes.

A Top For A Teenager : An Embroidery Motif, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

A Top For A Teenager : An Embroidery Motif, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WHEN a girl shows an interest in sewing, encourage her by allowing her to make something for herself.

Choose something simple that can be finished quickly without Mother's help—a difficult, time-consuming article may cause a flagging of interest.

Sugar Bags - Just Sugar Bags : Brunch Buns, H M. Gloster Jan 1961

Sugar Bags - Just Sugar Bags : Brunch Buns, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

DID you all buy bags of sugar and make jam, and bottle fruit, while the soft fruits were in season?

I do hope you saved those sugar bags—also the bits and pieces of gay drip-dry cottons left over from home dressmaking.

You will find there are plenty of useful and attractive articles that you can make with these things.

Preserving And Pickling, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

Preserving And Pickling, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

AT this time of the year many housewives wish that fruit trees would bear little and often throughout the year rather than a lot in a comparatively short space of time.

We preserve fruits to try to spread this short period, and to have them on hand to vary menus when fruit is out of season.

A cupboard shelf packed with bottles of colourful, neatly arranged preserved fruits is indeed a satisfying sight.

Bottling is the most popular method, with pickling being done to a smaller extent.

From Cropping To Crochet, H M. Gloster Jan 1961

From Cropping To Crochet, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY of our readers will now be enjoying well earned holidays at the sea-side, after a strenuous year on farms.

The woman who is busily occupied all the year finds it difficult to sit for hours on the beach just watching the children paddling and playing with buckets and spades.

Getting The Best From Your Sewing Machine, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

Getting The Best From Your Sewing Machine, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

"NEXT to the plough, this is perhaps humanity's most blessed instrument." (Louis Antoine Godey.)

In some homes the sewing machine is the most sadly neglected and ill-used servant. It is often left set up, exposed to dust, dampness and scratching, used as a table and otherwise abused.

It is not right to have a machine stitching imperfectly and noisily and used for long periods without maintenance when a little attention can keep it performing quietly and efficiently.

Curtains, O. Evans Scott Jan 1961

Curtains, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

To a housewife, spring and spring cleaning are practically synonymous. At this time we look with a stranger's eyes at our furnishings, changing them, cleaning, and making or buying new things.

A change in curtains can be relied upon to give a spring "face-lift" to any home.

Some Relations Of School And Family In American Culture, Robert F. Spencer Jan 1961

Some Relations Of School And Family In American Culture, Robert F. Spencer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Virtually any statement made about the contemporary American system of education can be subjected to infinite documentation. What the school should accomplish, what is has accomplished, what its curricula ought to be, how far it should or has become a kind of surrogate for the family, church or other institution, emerge as vital questions for the professional educators, questions, clearly, for which there is no single answer. Judgments become normative, ameliorative, critical, and certainly, nearly always fraught with overtones of emotionalism. This leaves the non-specialist who attempts to gain an over-view of the nature and image of the educator and …

Simnel Cake, H M. Gloster

THIS is a traditional cake of English rural origin that is usually served on "Mothering Sunday" or Mid-Lent Sunday (the fourth Sunday in Lent).

Mothering Sunday is the day on which sons and daughters visit their parents and take them gifts. Quite often the gift takes the form of a Simnel cake.

The Linen Press : Up-Side-Down Cake : Bird-Pecked Fruit, H M. Gloster Jan 1960

The Linen Press : Up-Side-Down Cake : Bird-Pecked Fruit, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A "LINEN PRESS" in the real sense of the word is an obsolete piece of household equipment now to be found only in museums.

It is a contrivance usually of oak and was used for pressing sheets, table napkins and other linen articles requiring flattening. It resembled the modern office press.

Setting The Table, H M. Gloster Jan 1960

Setting The Table, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IF we regard food as simply something that is necessary to maintain life, we are forced to the conclusion that basically there is very little difference between the delectable creations of a chef de cuisine and the scorched kangaroo and witchetygrubs enjoyed by the outback aborigines.

This is so patently untrue that we are encouraged to delve deeper into the subject.

Farm And Home - A Happy Christmas To Housewives, H M. Gloster Jan 1960

Farm And Home - A Happy Christmas To Housewives, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE Christmas season is at hand once more and the housewife will be confronted with the problem of providing appetising meals for various occasions.

Breakfast on Christmas morning may become a difficult meal in some households as the normal daily routine is naturally disturbed by a general mixture of church going, the excitement of young folk opening presents, the exploring of Christmas stockings, the door bell ringing with callers, and preparations for Christmas dinner.

Lamb For Good Living, H M. Gloster Jan 1960

Lamb For Good Living, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LAMB is at its best in the spring. With careful planning the housewife is able to serve it in a large variety of ways.

The favourite meal is Roast Lamb, or to be more correct baked lamb. Usually the forequarter or leg is baked. For a small roast, a piece of loin or part of the leg may be cooked.

The Laundering Of Table Linen : A Bag For Blue, H M. Gloster Jan 1960

The Laundering Of Table Linen : A Bag For Blue, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE eye-appeal of a dinner-table is always enhanced by good quality napery—and to my mind there is nothing to equal the appearance of a well-laundered white linen damask tablecloth with table-napkins to match.

Factors Associated With Attendance At Church Related Activities Of Lds Male Household Heads In Selected Utah Rural Areas, C. Leroy Anderson Jan 1959

Factors Associated With Attendance At Church Related Activities Of Lds Male Household Heads In Selected Utah Rural Areas, C. Leroy Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This study has two main purposes. First, to develop from theory hypotheses concerning the association between attendance of L.D.S., male household heads at church related activities and certain specific variables; and to test these hypotheses. The second purpose was to test certain other variables, (not related to theory) for association with church attendance of L.D.S., male household heads.

The chi-square test was used to determine whether or not the variables were significantly associated and the coefficient of contingency test to determine to what extent they were related. The .05 level of probability was chosen as the criterion for significance.

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins Jan 1958

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins

Theses and Dissertations

It is the writer's opinion that deviation from temple marriage in the Mormon culture brings to bear a direct and indirect social pressure so strong that it effects deviation in other areas of the culture. This contention is partly borne out by a tested hypothesis that "Members within the Latter-day Saint Church who were married in the temple would have characteristic patterns of behavior which would differ from patterns of behavior of those members who were married by a Church official or by a civil authority". This hypothesis was tested mainly with respect to behavior after marriage.
The cause of …

Types Of Behavior During Labor And Delivery And Scores On The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Bette Gloria Winthers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose of the Study

The thesis of this study is that personality characteristics can be shown as factors in the variation of behavior which occurs during labor and childbirth. It is felt that if personality traits can be measured by a standard device they will correlate with various types of behavior expressed during labor. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is one instrument which tests all of the more important phases of personality. This test was chosen as the device to be used in this study to determine the personality traits of the women involved. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

The Adjustment Of Eighty Correspondence Club Members As Indicated By Two Adjustment Inventories, Maurice R. Seaquist

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of the present thesis to determine the adjustment of a sampling of correspondence club members. The hypothesis is that the social adjustment of these individuals is inferior to that of the individuals used in two personality inventories. In addition, answers to these questions are sought:

  1. Is there a common need or problem that motivates these men and women to seek companionship through correspondence agencies?
  2. What is their age, sex, cultural and geographical background?
  3. What are the physical qualities and economic status of the members and what qualities and status are they seeking in the members they …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

  1. This study is the result of two separate surveys of the retail grocery stores in Logan, Utah. The primary purpose of these surveys was to make a detailed study of price differentials as they exist between the stores of different kind, class, location and size.
  2. Logan was chosen for this survey for a number of reasons: (1) It is typical of many Rocky Mountain cities for size. (2) There is no one industry that completely dominates the economy of the city. (3) There are sufficient stores in kind and number to give the necessary data. (4) Besides the local independent …

The Relation Of Certain Factors In Farm Family Life To Personality Development In Adolescents, Leland H. Stott Oct 1938

The Relation Of Certain Factors In Farm Family Life To Personality Development In Adolescents, Leland H. Stott

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Although "the family" has been much written about, and studied from many points of view in the past, relatively little attention has been given by investigators to the problem of determining the factors which make for successful family life. The need for information of this sort is obvious, and in recent years a few studies have been made from this point of view. The present study was undertaken for the purpose of gathering further information about "normal" families and some of the home-environmental factors which are thought to contribute to, or hinder, the achievement of successful family life.
