The writer proposes to show what these children were like, why they were committed to the agency, what their problems were, and what kind of an adjustment they were able to make within the agency.

This study has been fostered by developments in three fields of endeavor, each of which has contributed directly to the writer's approach to the subject and the conclusions which will be made. This study had its beginning in 1944 when the American Academy of Pediatrics passed a resolution "to make available to all mothers and children of the United states all essential preventive, diagnostic and curative services of high quality which used in cooperation with other services for children will make this country an ideal place for children to grow into responsible citizens." They realized that the first requisite to accomplishing their objective was a comprehensive knowledge of available facilities. In July 1946 the Board of Health of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, announced its decision to curtail services of the public health department serving the metropolitan area surrounding and including Louisville, and the outlying agricultural region in the rural part of Jefferson County. In the past decade the combined health department for Louisville and for Jefferson County had accomplished much for the health needs of the citizens of the community. Since 1909, the King's Daughters' Home for Incurables in Louisville, Kentucky, has provided institutional care for physically handicapped persons who are residents of Kentucky. A hospital survey done by the Kentucky State Board of Health in 1945-46 classified the Home as a "custodial-type institution", and did not include it in the survey, as it was not considered a hospital. Surveys on phases of the work of the institution were done in 1914 (Haven Emerson Survey) and in 1940 (Health and Welfare Council Survey) for administrative purposes. This year the work of the Home has provided the material for three theses …

A beautiful and successful actress, Lotta Crabtree, included as part of her will, the following statement: "I have given much thought to the sad conditions of those who may have erred in life, both men and women, who suffered punishment therefore in our state prisons and reformatories, and who find themselves after their release in an almost helpless condition in which to begin the world anew." This is a study of patients readmitted to Nichols Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during the period of April through December of 1946. This particular project was undertaken because on general observation, there appeared to be an unusual number of patients being readmitted to the hospital after having received "maximum hospital benefits" at a previous hospital admission and having been discharged "improved". To bear out this observation, a sample study was made over a ten day period and it was found that 14 percent of all the patients being admitted were readmissions. This study is an attempt to follow the development of the group of children who attended the Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School of Louisville, Kentucky in its first three years, September, 1939 through May, 1942. The children were studied on a comparative basis of their behavior in the two school situations - nursery school in 1939-1942 and elementary school in 1946. The study not only considers the child's behavior in the classroom, but also attempts to evaluate the effects at personality and environmental influences upon the child's school adjustment - his health, conditions in the home, and mental development. This thesis, submitted to the faculty of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1933, surveys the social welfare, educational, and spiritual activities of the Sisters of the Holy Family, a Catholic religious congregation of African American women founded in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1842. Drawing on institutional records, community documents, and the author's own twenty-five years of experience with the congregation, the study chronicles the development of the Sisters' welfare activities across three areas.
