Male-To-Female Sexual Violence In Rural Communities: A Sociological Review, Walter Dekeseredy Dr.
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The extant sociological literature on male-to-female violence in rural communities reveals that the bulk of the empirical work on this problem focuses mainly on non-lethal physical assaults, such as beatings. Much more research on sexual violence is sorely needed. The main objective of this review is twofold: (1) to describe the current state of international sociological knowledge about male sexual violence against adult women and (2) to suggest new directions in research and theory.

The sexual-exploitation industries, including prostitution and pornography, are patriarchal institutions that are inconsistent with dignity, solidarity, and equality. Radical feminism offers a compelling analysis not only for women but also for men striving to be fully human.

The Case For Public Investment In Higher Pay For New York State Home Care Workers: Estimated Costs And Savings, Isaac Jabola-Carolus, Stephanie Luce, Ruth Milkman

This report explores one potential solution to the mounting home care labor shortage in New York State: substantially raising wages for the state's home care workers. The analysis presents detailed projections, based on the best available data, of the economic effects of such an intervention, estimating the costs and benefits that would result. We find that public funding to raise home care wages would require significant resources, but those costs would be surpassed by the resulting savings, tax revenues, and economic spillover effects. The net economic gain would total at least $3.7 billion. Lifting wages would also help fill nearly …

From their first use in the late 1970s until the mid-1990s, Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) gave rise to serious concerns by feminists internationally. Their questions ranged from asking about health risks to ethical and political problems inherent in these technologies. However, over the last 25 years, interest in women’s health which used to be central to feminist theory and politics, progressively decreased and with it concerns about ART. Polarizing rhetoric, racist violence, and racial inequality continue to cast a dark shadow over democracy and threaten to further divide our communities. How our country moves forward in this time is under consideration by practitioners, scholars, and everyday people alike. This seminar will discuss how transportation agencies are in a unique position to reduce health disparities in the African American, African Immigrant & Refugee communities through sustainable policy, systems, and environmental changes. These three speakers from the Multnomah County Health Department will present the findings of their recent Crash and Safety report. They will discuss their data and methodology to connect the dots between chronic disease disparities, leading causes of death in communities, and transportation inequities as determinants to health. They will also present policy recommendations and a call to action.

The Horseshoe Theory Of Mental Illness And Incarceration, Alicia Y. Liu
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper focuses on the relationship between historical mental illness treatment and modern incarceration, reimagining it as a horseshoe, with mental illness on one end and prison on the other. There are three reasons why the two parallel each other, these being: formulated sequestration, chronicity, and histories of failed high-minded reform. The paper then writes about the intersection of the two in a mental health ward in a prison. The last aspect discussed is the gap between the ends of the horseshoe, which is due to the role of volition.

Victimization In Homeless African American Women And Their High-Risk Behaviors: Implication For Counselors, Kewana M. Davis, Jessica D. Davis, Joyce K. Jones
The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors
Victimization is an increasing concern among homeless African American women. This study’s aim was to investigate victimization factors (e.g., sexual assault, physical assault, and domestic violence) and its prevalence and effects on African American women high risk behaviors while homeless. Participants were 200 homeless African American women (ages, 18 years to 65 years and above) receiving services from clinics, shelters, and community agencies. This research brief reports findings from a survey completed by 301 Oregon police officers and sheriff deputies in the latter half of 2020. The survey asked about their experiences enforcing the state’s current marijuana laws and their perception on trends in marijuana-related public safety issues
