Theorizing Constructive Learning Environments For Secondary Girls' Stem Learning, Safiyya Bintali
Undergraduate Research Symposium Performances & Exhibitions
Background: Multiple studies analyze STEM learning environments, but in these studies, secondary-age (middle/high school) female students are not the focus. There is a lack of research on creating effective STEM learning environments for motivating girls to be introduced to/motivated to pursue STEM fields.
Purpose of Study: Our study in the Engaging Girls in Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (GUIC) summer camp, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s ITEST program, aims to close that gap by investigating elements that made up a constructivist STEM learning environment, and how these elements ensured an effective and supportive STEM learning environment for secondary-age female …

The Effect Of Typewriting Vs. Handwriting Lecture Notes On Learning: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis., Timothy Schaun Lau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining the effect of note-taking modality during lecture, that is, taking notes by hand using pen and paper vs. taking notes using a keyboard and computer, on learning among secondary and postsecondary students. I begin with a review of the literature and theoretical introduction to the theories and terms used. From a theoretical standpoint, there are strong reasons to believe that taking notes by hand might offer recall benefits relative to taking notes using a computer and keyboard. At the same time, I point out that one problem, which I …

Ramble solves problems that accompany traditional journaling by making the journaling process more accessible and requiring less time from the user.
Digital Equity: Difficulties Of Implementing The 1:1 Computing Initiative In Low-Income Areas, Demetric D. Williams
Digital Equity: Difficulties Of Implementing The 1:1 Computing Initiative In Low-Income Areas, Demetric D. Williams
Dissertations
Successful One-to-One Computing Initiative implementation requires educators to communicate and collaborate effectively with everyone in the learning community. However, other factors such as teacher’s professional development, student’s perception, and parent’s perception often affect the implementation of the One-to-One Computing Initiative. School districts, which serve low-income areas in Mississippi, have difficulties ensuring students and communities have access to the information technology they need to participate outside the school setting. The concept is often called digital equity. However, when officials do not address the capacity, there is a vital threat to the participants’ civic, cultural, employment, lifelong learning, and access to essential …
Climate Change And Racial Violence, Aidan Connors
Climate Change And Racial Violence, Aidan Connors
Bryant University Undergraduate Journal
Climate change poses the greatest threat mankind has ever seen, not since WW2 is the damage potential so great for humanity. Humanity’s understanding of the dangers that climate change presents isn’t something new, newspaper archives show articles warning about the dangers of carbon output into the atmosphere as early as 1912 (Roney and Otamatea). Despite our knowledge of the dangers, the actions necessary to fight climate change aren’t being taken because of the risk to profits it presents for companies.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.
Session presenters will provide an overview of their work, “Critical …

Exploring Youths’ Decision To Participate In Stem Afterschool Programs, Brooke M. Stafford, Virginia L. J. Bolshakova
Indiana STEM Education Conference
STEM afterschool programs offer a range of academic, social, and emotional outcomes to support positive youth development. In particular, STEM afterschool programs have been shown to increase student self-efficacy and interest in pursuing STEM careers (Chan et al., 2020; Dabney et al., 2012). Youth must first choose to attend the STEM afterschool programs to gain the many benefits offered. However, participation in such programs decreases as youth get older and encounter additional competing interests (i.e., home responsibilities, jobs, etc.). To get youth to attend, STEM afterschool programs must meet the needs of youth by leveraging resources, activities, and relationships.
