Hlcg: A Hierarchical Lane-Changing Gaming Decision Model For Heterogeneous Traffic Flow On Two-Lane Highways, Tianyi Wang, Chong He, Hao Li, Yixuan Li, Yiming Xu, Yangyang Wang, Junfeng Jiao

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Discretionary lane-changing behavior is one of the most common highway operations, which seriously affects traffic efficiency and safety. Nowadays, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are advancing rapidly, though not yet fully widespread. As a result, a mixed traffic environment with traditional human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and CAVs will persist for the foreseeable future. To achieve effective automatic lane-changing maneuvers, it’s necessary to propose a lane-changing decision model for heterogeneous traffic flow on two-lane highways. This paper firstly extends longitudinal car-following models based on the intelligent driver model and lateral lane-changing models using quintic polynomial curves to accommodate heterogeneous traffic flow, and …

Uncovering Electric Vehicle Ownership Disparities Using K-Means Clustering Analysis: A Case Study Of Austin, Texas, Seung Jun Choi, Junfeng Jiao

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Transportation electrification is promoted for its environmental and energy efficiency benefits. However, recent studies examining electric vehicle (EV) adoption have revealed complex patterns influenced by race and income disparities. These studies, primarily based on surveys, often overlook regional ownership variations and built environment measures linked to urban form. Our study addresses this gap by analyzing actual EV registration data with spatial details using hot spot and K-means clustering analyses. The analysis results revealed a pronounced East–West divide in EV adoption. In West Austin, clusters indicate a higher number of EVs, greater energy consumption, and residents who are predominantly White, with …

Forecasting Traffic Speed During Daytime From Google Street View Images Using Deep Learning, Junfeng Jiao, Huihai Wang

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Traffic forecasting plays an important role in urban planning. Deep learning methods outperform traditional traffic flow forecasting models because of their ability to capture spatiotemporal characteristics of traffic conditions. However, these methods require high-quality historical traffic data, which can be both difficult to acquire and non-comprehensive, making it hard to predict traffic flows at the city scale. To resolve this problem, we implemented a deep learning method, SceneGCN, to forecast traffic speed at the city scale. The model involves two steps: firstly, scene features are extracted from Google Street View (GSV) images for each road segment using pretrained Resnet18 models. …

Bike-Sharing Station Usage And The Surrounding Built Environments In Major Texas Cities, Louis G. Alcorn, Junfeng Jiao

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study analyzes the effect of different built environments on bike-share usage in nascent dock-based systems in three Texas cities. Past research offers little insight as to whether elements associated with higher bicycle usage in major cities affect ridership in secondary, developing bike-share markets within lower density American cities. In Austin and Houston, a positive relationship emerges between bike-share usage and proximity to high-comfort bicycle facilities. All three cities demonstrated surprisingly minimal relationship between bike-share usage and other proven drivers of bicycling activity in urban areas, which may result from system design for leisure- and recreation-based trips.

Estimating E-Scooter Traffic Flow Using Big Data To Support Planning For Micromobility, Feng Chen, Junfeng Jiao, Haofeng Wang

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Dockless e-scooter sharing, as a new shared micromobility service, has quickly gained popularity in recent years. In this paper, we present a practical approach to estimating e-scooter flow patterns without knowing the actual routes taken by the e-scooter riders. Our method takes advantage of a huge open dataset that contains the origins and destinations of millions of trips. We show that our models can help cities better support the emerging shared micromobility service. The additional information generated in the modeling process can also be useful for a more refined analysis of e-scooter trips.

How Much Do Users Value A Network Expansion? Evidence From The Public Transit System In Singapore, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

We estimate the network effects of a public transit system by examining the impact of its expansion on housing prices. Our results show that a major expansion of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system increased the price of apartments within 0.5 km of a pre-expansion station by 1.8% relative to apartments that were further away from a station. Evaluated at the mean housing price, the expansion increased the value of pre-connected apartments by at least S$455 million in aggregate, which is equivalent to 9% of the estimated S$5 billion cost of the expansion.

Impacts Of Beijing Bus Rapid Transit On Pre-Owned Home Values, Hao Pang, Junfeng Jiao Apr 2015

Impacts Of Beijing Bus Rapid Transit On Pre-Owned Home Values, Hao Pang, Junfeng Jiao

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has gained increasing popularity worldwide in the last few decades. However, few studies have investigated BRT’s impacts on property values in Chinese cities. This research, taking BRT route 1 (BRT1) and BRT route 3 (BRT3) in Beijing as examples, showed that proximity to BRT3 stops is weakly related to pre-owned home prices along the route, whereas BRT1 has induced a significant price premium. For BRT1, the impact is not linear. Specifically, pre-owned home prices for homes within 5–10 minutes’ walking distance to BRT stations is 5.35% higher than those located closer to or farther away. The …

Transit Deserts: The Gap Between Demand And Supply, Junfeng Jiao, Maxwell Dillivan Oct 2012

Transit Deserts: The Gap Between Demand And Supply, Junfeng Jiao, Maxwell Dillivan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The term “transit desert” is a new concept that looks at the gap between level of transit service (supply) and needs of a particular population (demand). These populations are often referred to as “transit dependent,” people that are too young, too old, or too poor or who are physically unable to drive. “Transit deserts” in this case are defined as areas that lack adequate public transit service given areas containing populations that are deemed transit-dependent. This study aims to analyze and establish a clear method for calculating and quantifying gaps between transit demand and supply using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). …
