The Internet In India And China, Larry Press, William Foster, Peter Wolcott, William Mchenry

This article compares the diffusion of the Internet in China and India. Using a six–dimension framework for characterizing the state of the Internet in a nation, we observe that, while both nations have made significant progress since our last comparison (in 1999), China enjoys a substantial lead over India.
We also examine determinants of Internet diffusion. We find that the Chinese Internet has benefited from economic and trade reform begun in the late 1980s, a strong government commitment to the Internet, complementary human and capital resources, etc. The two nations have very different governments and policies, leading to differing approaches …

Das Innovationsverhalten Der Deutschen Softwareindustrie, Michael Friedewald, Knut Blind, Jakob Edler
Michael Friedewald
In this article we present the results of two empirical studies focusing on the structure and extent of the innovation activities of the German Software Industry and analyze distinctive features of Software Innovations. We distinguish the activities of the primary (core) Software Industry and secondary industries such as Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Motor Industry and Telecommunications. A special focus is put on the question if innovations in Software are sequential, on the role of Open Source Software and the importance of inter- operability.

Toward A Theory Of Federal Bureaucracy For The Twenty-First Century, Jane E. Fountain

The Internet promises vast changes in American government that range from Internet voting to interactive online services for the public to virtual diplomacy. As a vehicle for disjunctive change in communication, coordination, and control, the Internet and related information technologies make possible new and exciting developments in operations, regulation, and enforcement. In spite of its revolutionary power, the potential benefits of the Internet, and its potential perils, will be strongly influenced by the current organizations and institutions of government, for it is within the constraints posed by these structural arrangements that government actors make decisions and information networks that connect …

Imagine that you are a married woman who wants to have a genetically related child with your husband. Five embryos are implanted in your uterus and five are frozen and kept by the fertility clinic for your later use. You successfully conceive and give birth to twins. You notice that the children you give birth to are of a different race than …
Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Books/Book chapters
Newer institutions are accused of adopting the accoutrements of traditional universities, actively copying their research profile and teaching programmes, and engaging in ‘academic’ or ‘mission’ drift. For others, however, these changes are part of the natural or inevitable process of institutional development and historical change, or a further step in the democratisation of the ‘Humboltian ethic’ (Neave, 2000, p265). If massification and expansion in 1960s differentiated the second stage in higher educational development from its elite origins, then the late 1990s marked the beginning of the third stage. By then, it was clear that a broadly educated population could no …
Vertical Integration And Media Regulation In The New Economy, Christopher S. Yoo
Vertical Integration And Media Regulation In The New Economy, Christopher S. Yoo

Recent mergers and academic commentary have placed renewed focus on what has long been one of the central issues in media policy: whether media conglomerates can use vertical 'integration to harm competition. This Article seeks to move past previous studies, which have explored limited aspects of this issue, and apply the full sweep of modern economic theory to evaluate the regulation of vertical integration in media-related industries. It does so initially by applying the basic static efficiency analyses of vertical integration developed under the Chicago and post-Chicago Schools of antitrust law and economics to three industries: broadcasting, cable television, and …
Towards An Integrated Theory Of Intellectual Property, Gideon Parchomovsky, Peter Siegelman
Towards An Integrated Theory Of Intellectual Property, Gideon Parchomovsky, Peter Siegelman
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses a curious gap in the theory of intellectual property. One of the central dogmas in both the legal and economic literatures is that patents, copyrights and trademarks constitute separate forms of protection, each serving different purposes and designed to operate independently of the others. By challenging this dogma, however, this Article shows that certain combinations of intellectual property protection give rise to important synergies. When a patentee can develop brand loyalty among its customers, the existence of trademark protection allows her to extend its protection even after her patent expires, and thereby earn higher profits than would …

Multimedia Product Documentation – User Requirements, Walter Hudetz, Michael Friedewald
Michael Friedewald
The globalisation of industry and the strong depend- ence of the German machine manufacturers on export has increased the importance of an up-to-date and user-oriented product documentation not only as a cost factor but as a compe- tition factor of strategic importance as well. The use of Multi- media is a promising approach to realize such an improved documentation. This paper presents the results of a survey that was conducted among the manufacturers of machines and their customers to identify the user requirements for Multimedia Product Documentation. As a result of the analysis a number of success factors are identified. …
