To Walk The Earth In Safety 5th Edition (Fy2003), Us Dos Pm/Wra

Global CWD Repository

This fifth edition of To Walk the Earth in Safety contains information on specific programs and accomplishments of the U.S. Humanitarian Mine Action Program through the end of 2003. Although the United States did begin providing substantial mine action assistance to Afghanistan as early as 1988 and then to Cambodia and some other countries starting in 1991, the formal program as we know it today really began in 1993. Thus, 2003 is a milestone, marking ten uninterrupted years of genuine and signifi cant U.S. action to eradicate persistent landmines—both anti-personnel and anti-vehicle—as well as unexploded ordnance wherever they threaten civilian …

Tampering: Deliberate Handling And Use Of Live Ordnance In Cambodia, Richard Moyes

Global CWD Repository

This report was commissioned to examine the prominence, within casualty data in Cambodia, of accidents resulting from deliberate interaction with ordnance. The project was designed to analyse a persistent pattern of deaths and injuries that was visible within the casualty surveillance data being published on an annual basis in Cambodia. The purpose of this project was to identify and analyse the nature and prevalence of the ordnance handling behaviours that lie behind the casualty data. The project adopted what would broadly be considered a health research approach. The study provides an indication of the prevalence and incidence of deliberate handling …

A Study Of Mechanical Application In Demining, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

The GICHD Study of Mechanical Application in Demining is published after two years of research. The study puts the spotlight onto the use of machines as part of worldwide efforts to clear land mines. It looks at how machines work, the physical interaction between the machine tool, the ground struck, and the effects on the mines and UXO. The main roles for machines - potential for clearance, area reduction, and ground preparation - are explained, giving a description of each methodology, and illustrating these with actual case studies from the field.

The study also deals with how machines can be …

Technical Assistance To Uxo Clearance Operations In Savannakhet Province, Lao Pdr, Nigel Orr Apr 2004

Technical Assistance To Uxo Clearance Operations In Savannakhet Province, Lao Pdr, Nigel Orr

Global CWD Repository

The needs of the communities vary depending on their location. The communities close to the main access routes have few needs in relation to UXO action as they have access to most services already and many have already received UXO clearance support. The communities in the inaccessible areas need safe land to grow food, but in many cases access is required to permit UXO clearance and other development activities to take place. For these areas UXO clearance in support of access is most important with clearance for agriculture required once access is achieved. UXO clearance to reduce accidents are not …

Human Security In Cambodia: A Statistical Analysis Of Large-Sample Sub-National Vulnerability Data, Taylor Owen, Aldo Benini

Global CWD Repository

With the goal of measuring and analyzing Cambodia human insecurity, Dr. Aldo Benini and Taylor Owen have collected a large amount of data down to the local (1,600 communes) level. At their disposal is the largest existing geo-referenced database of Cambodian security and vulnerability data. They study four types of violence: landmine and UXO strikes (most of which are victim-actuated), as well as serious crime, land conflicts, and domestic violence (perpetrated by contemporary agents).

Serious crime lumps together murder, kidnapping, robberies, and theft, much of which obviously is violent. Using different types of regression models, socio-economic and war determinants are statistically …

In 2003, the United States Department of State, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs/Weapons Removal and Abatement, (PM/WRA) tasked the James Madison University Mine Action Information Center (MAIC) with producing a cost-benefit analysis of two demining programs to be used to develop a model to analyze the quantitative impacts, expected results, and suggested prioritization of mine clearance activities. Prioritization was to be accomplished within the context of socio-economic development programs. Lessons learned from UN guidance, earlier studies, experts in the mine action community, and field studies influenced the development of the decision tool for prioritization of humanitarian mine action projects.
