Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has been a dedicated community leader for over two decades. She has worked with the Cook County Board of Commissioners, elected officials and County employees to implement major reform and reshape County government through fiscal responsibility, innovative leadership, transparency and accountability, and improved services. What is the historical connection between deinstitutionalization and the Olmstead decision? The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze policy within a historical perspective the connections between institutional care, deinstitutionalization, the Olmstead decision, and the effect on persons with intellectual disabilities lived experience, in the state of Illinois.
The data collected include, the transcripts of interviews with four participants, artifacts from policy documents and historical papers accessed from the Disability Museum online journals. The creation of a table for use in coding themes as associated with 5 (out of 18) core concepts for disability policy.

Odette Yousef is the North Side Bureau reporter for WBEZ 91.5FM, Chicago’s NPR affiliate. She works in one of three urban community bureaus to extend Chicago Public Media’s coverage to people and places that may not always make it into mainstream news outlets. In particular, Odette focuses on issues relating to Chicago’s Asian-American populations, as well as many other minority populations that live in the city’s far North Side neighborhoods. Prior to coming to Chicago, Odette was a reporter with WABE FM in Atlanta, and worked at NPR in Washington, DC. She also co-hosts the television show My Chicago on …

Unintended Consequences: Reverberations Of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Lauren Heidbrink

This paper details the socio-legal factors that shape the relationship between the child, the family, and the state, and the ways unaccompanied migrant children’s lives have come to be defined and contested. The legal identity of migrant children is socially situated within a history that intertwines social movements of helping professionals, legal jurisdictions characterized by increasingly intolerant approaches to juveniles, and shifts in the treatment of unauthorized migrant youth under immigration law over time.
