A General Evaluation Of The Geneva International Centre For Humanitarian Demining (Gichd) - Final Report, David Hewitson, Ariana Calza Bini

Global CWD Repository

The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) is generally perceived to be relevant and effective within the mine action sector, although there are some vocal, and potentially significant groups that take a more negative view.

In interviews with attendees at the 13th International Meeting of National Mine Action Programme Directors and UN Advisors, 65% of respondents were positive about the Centre's relevance and 63% about its effectiveness.

The Centre's publications were generally very well received. The Francophone programme enjoyed an entirely enthusiastic and positive response from all who deal with it. Eighty per cent of respondents said that they …

Deminers reported that the Victim was in a particularly happy mood that day. The Victim went to the grenade without telling anyone and began to dismantle it. His actions can be reliably inferred because the black cap of the grenade was undamaged at the site (and featured in the first site photographs after the accident). So it seems that the Victim got some way into the grenade before it went off in his hands. Severe hand (amputated fingers), arm, and upper body injury resulted - with bubbling blood and air from open chest wounds. From this it is inferred that …

On 04 May 2010 at 08:45 am while [the Victim] the de-miner was excavating a detected signal in his clearance lane, his bayonet hit top of an anti-personnel PMN mine and caused it to go off. According to the investigation report, it seems that the de-miner started excavation directly from the pinpointed spot with his bayonet and caused the explosion and accident. Unfortunately improper use of PPE caused catastrophic injuries to the face and eyes of the victim deminer. He has lost his right eye, traumatic amputation of right-hand fingers and sustained some superficial injures on different parts of his …

Sida Ddg Evaluation, Kennet Korayi, Tim Lardner, Anna Wood

Global CWD Repository

On 1 March 2008 Danish Demining Group (DDG) entered into a two-year agreement with the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) to implement the project "Survey, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and Mine Risk Education in Southern Sudan". The project aims to support the repatriation process for refugees and IDPs in South Sudan by providing a safe environment for the returnees and communities, and facilitating the work of humanitarian organisations. As the project is scheduled to end in 2010, Sida and DDG decided to commission an evaluation to inform the decision concerning a possible extension. The evaluation was conducted by a team …

The team leader [the Victim] was doing a QA check on one of the Foot Track already cleared by the deminer. Out of five mines laid only one M14 AP mine has been recovered from this FT. The team leader was trying to recheck the cleared area again with the metal detector trying to find the missing mine, during his QA check he stepped on one deep buried M14 AP mine in the area which has been already checked by the deminer and Team Leader.

On 9th April 2010 at 10:27 while [the Victim] was working in his clearance lane, busy in excavation drill, the accident happened and caused severe injuries to his right hand (traumatic amputation) and some minor injuries to his neck and nose. His visor was broken down and separated from headband. As per the investigation report, the deminer has breached the SOPs as dug directly down on top of the mine. It is also possible that he tried to work in a bit hurry to increase the progress. As he was fully dressed with PPE, therefore, remained save from other severe …

Gender Guidelines For Mine Action Programmes, Unmas

Global CWD Repository

In 2004–05, the Inter-Agency Coordination Group for Mine Action (IACG-MA) endorsed the first UN Gender Guidelines for Mine Action Programmes to enhance the integration of gender considerations into UN mine action programmes. The guidelines were developed with the assistance of the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA). This effort followed the launch by DPKO in 2004 of the Gender Resource Package for Peacekeeping Operations, which identified key gender issues and provided an overview of how they could be addressed most effectively. The package, designed on the strong foundation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), recommended elaborating detailed guidelines within …

As a result of the explosion, [MUV fuze] sustained injuries on his eyes, right side ear, arm and head; the injuries indicate that the de-miner was not using his visor properly.

Linking Mine Action And Development | Guidelines For Mine/Erw Operators, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action programmes often are not linked early and strongly enough with key development actors. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. More specifically, the guidelines seek to:

  • Increase awareness that landmines and other remnants of conflict block development in many affected countries
  • Strengthen coordination between mine action and …

ITF contribution to the global fight against landmines and especially to the one in South East Europe (SEE) can not and must not be measured solely by numbers and statistical data. Elements of both projects can be seen as very successful. Overall, the UNMAS project was more successful, whereas UNDP's ANBP was seen as increasingly under-performing, and became less relevant, during this funding period. However, the work of ANBP's Implementing Partners (IPs), and in particular the HALO Trust's village level Weapons & Ammunition Disposal (WAD) programme, initially funded by ANBP, is seen as highly successful.

The first draft of a mine action strategy in Iraq was formulated in 2004 in line with the urgent requirement to structure and organize mine action in Iraq in order to support national development priorities in line with the National Development Strategy (NDS).

Since the anti-personnel mine-ban treaty was adopted in September 1997, mine action has helped an ever-increasing number of civilians reclaim their lives and restore their livelihoods. The treaty has helped mobilize the international community’s response to landmines and their impact on people. It is a testament to what can be achieved when we collectively take on a grave humanitarian and development challenge.

The United Nations pledges to assist mine-affected countries in meeting their obligations under the anti-personnel mine-ban treaty and other international norms related to mine action. The United Nations continues to clear areas known or believed to be contaminated …

Study Of The Effects Of Aging On Landmines, Cisr

Most of the mines that currently threaten populations were manufactured more than 50 years ago and many have been in the ground for 30 years or more. Despite the inevitable and obvious deterioration, there has been very little research into the effects of aging on landmines. In 2008, James Madison University (JMU), the Center for International Stabilization and Recovery (CISR), and C King Associates Ltd (CKA) began a study designed to understand the aging process and the range of implications for the various components of mine action. The two-and-a-half year study was funded by grants from the US Department of …
