The Man-Made Disaster: Fire In Cities In The Medieval Middle East, Anna Akasoy Jan 2007

The Man-Made Disaster: Fire In Cities In The Medieval Middle East, Anna Akasoy

Publications and Research

Considering the building materials and climatic conditions in the medieval Middle East, fires must have been a major problem. This article provides a first survey of sources which are relevant for studying the impact of fires in urban environments. Evidence can be found, for example, in historiographies such as Ibn Kathīr's The Beginning and the End, or in legal discussions. Most fires mentioned in these sources were caused during riots or war, or by accidents in markets. The article also analyses how far fires fit into the general pattern of discussions around disasters in medieval Arabic literature.

Quantitative Analysis Of A Turbulent Wind Tunnel With Obstructions For Use In Liquid Flame Spread Experiments, Beau M. Brantley Mar 2006

Quantitative Analysis Of A Turbulent Wind Tunnel With Obstructions For Use In Liquid Flame Spread Experiments, Beau M. Brantley

Theses and Dissertations

The research was done as part of an effort to develop alternative fire suppressant technologies for aircraft engine nacelles. The turbulent shear flow behind a surface mounted fence inside an open circuit wind tunnel was investigated experimentally. The tunnel test section was designed to be 2-D and exhibit flow qualities similar to those found in a typical engine nacelle. A 279 mm wide fuel pan was inserted approximately four fence heights downstream of the fence location. The fuel pan was filled using water to simulate fuel with a depth of 32 mm. Cold flow tests were done on different fence …

Fire Hazard Forecasts For Farmlands, J Hogan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The ever-increasing destruction by grass and forest fires during the summer months serves to emphasise the fact that may people are still showing considerable apathy towards this serious danger to property and life. In an effort to stimulate interest in prevention and control the Rural Bush Fire Prevention Advisory Committee, towards the end of last summer, convened a meeting to which representatives from the Forestry, Railways and Meteorological Departments were invited. The outcome of this meeting was that the Weather Bureau agreed to institute a fire hazard forecasting network to cover most of the agricultural areas in the South-West of …
