Community Forests: Needs & Resources For Technical Assistance In Northen New England, Misha Mytar

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

The Community Forest Collaborative seeks to expand community ownership and management of forestland in northern New England and has documented the value of community forests both as a community investment strategy and as a component of regional landscape conservation strategies.

Research conducted over the last three years has determined that there needs to be a concerted effort to develop an infrastructure of support communities that want to acquire own and manage forestland. Two principle actions were recommended:

Expand resources for acquisition and management

and

Expand formalize and institutionalize technical assistance

Securing Environmental Flows on the Colorado River in an Era of Climate Change: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities (March 21)

The Colorado River is the primary surface water resource of the Southwest, providing water to approximately 30 million residents. Studies and policy decisions associated with a recently completed EIS point to an ever-tightening water supply due to longstanding growth pressures exacerbated by significant climate change impacts. Given these trends, how can the river’s environmental needs be satisfied?

Understanding The Motivations Of Rock Climbers: A Social Worlds Study, Amy Miller Ansari

Rock climbing affects public lands through erosion, destruction of vegetation, and disturbance to historical sites. Minimum impact messages can help reduce impacts but requires understanding characteristics of the message recipient. The purpose of this study was to understand the motivations of rock climbers to help land managers design more effective minimum impact messages. This study assesses the motivations of rock climbers using a social worlds approach, focusing on the sub-worlds of. traditional climbers, sport climbers, and boulderers. Aquarium enthusiasts use corals, live rock and associated products (e.g. sand) to enhance the aesthetics or function of the marine aquaria they keep and enjoy. There is a large and growing market for these products.

The Department of Fisheries has prepared this draft ‘Final Policy Paper’ as the second phase in the development of a management framework for the aquaculture of coral and live rock. The document outlines the position and needs of the emerging industry and identifies the management arrangements and policies the Department of Fisheries is proposing to implement.
