We choose to focus on student growth for these OEP awards because we think it is a better reflection than proficiency rates of how the school is impacting students. The Effects Of Grading Practices On Motivations For Learning At The Middle School Level, Justin D. Stebbins Ms

The objective of this quantitative survey study was to measure the effect grading traditionally (using averaging) versus non-traditionally (best, most recent evidence) on four types of student motivation. These types of motivation were mastery orientation (learning for learning sake), performance orientation (going for the grade or external recognition), performance avoidance (not wanting to appear incompetent), and mastery avoidance (not wanting to lose what you have). This set of orientations is derived from the goal orientation theory.

The 2013-14 school year marks ten years since the Arkansas General Assembly passed legislation to construct a new K-12 funding system in response to a 2002 Arkansas Supreme Court ruling in the decades-long court case, Lake View School District No. 25 v. Huckabee. The General Assembly established a foundation formula to provide adequate funding to districts across the state and created categorical funding to provide additional equity funding to districts based on need. The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the effect that educational choice, in the form of vouchers, is having on the performance of traditional public schools in Hamilton County, Ohio. The threat of losing students to vouchers creates a sense of competition for students, and ultimately the dollars that are attached to them. This competition is relatively new to public education and is being promoted by state legislators as a catalyst for public school improvement. Marginalized Stakeholders And Performative Politics: Dueling Discourses In Education Policymaking, Celina Su

American urban education policy debates pivot around dueling lines of discourse on what ails inner-city youth; such students are portrayed as emblems of a largely African-American and Latino ‘culture of failure’, even as their voices remain largely absent from debates about them. In response, youth-led organizations attempt to forward youth as political stakeholders. I draw upon ethnographic data from two such organizations to examine the performative aspects of their campaign work. I focus on how they engaged in (1) counter-scripting, to imagine themselves as political stakeholders and substantively prepare themselves for their new roles, and in (2) counter-staging, to gain …

The Challenge Of Inner-City Education, Lois Libby

There are two Connecticuts described in public education circles: One Connecticut includes a set of school systems that are suburban, educating primarily white and/or Asian students. The other set of Connecticut schools systems is urban, comprised primarily of students of color, and of low socio-economic status. The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the latter set of schools, provide some history of their development, look at the indicators of poor progress in more detail, review options of ameliorating the urban school systems, including assessments of state efforts so far, and offer some perspectives and conclusions.
