As of policy choices, the two presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush took different approaches towards transparency and secrecy. They diverged in their policies of managing federal information and their administrations records. Accordingly, the Bush administration and Obama administration had both implied the concept of transparency a new avenue for the public's participation and communication. Despite the rhetoric and wordy promise of transparency, Presidents Bush and Obama painted their administrations with secrecy and covert operations. They tightened up the cap on their administrations by changing the purpose and text of the Freedom of Information Act. However, there were variations …

Objective: To compare sociodemographic and motivational factors for healthcare use and identify desirable health-promoting resources among groups in a low socioeconomic status (SES) community in Chicago, IL. Background: Disparities in health services and outcomes are well established in low SES urban neighborhoods in the United States and many factors beyond service availability and quality impact community health. Yet there is no clear process for engaging communities in building resources to improve population-level health in such locales. Methods: A hospital building project led to a partnership of public health researchers, architects, and planners who conducted community-engaged research. We collected resident data …

In this paper, the contrasting theories of metabolic rift and ecological modernization theory (EMT) are applied to the same empirical phenomenon. Metabolic rift argues that the natural metabolic relationship between humans and nature has been fractured through modernization, industrialization and urbanization. EMT, in contrast, argues that societies in an advanced state of industrialization adopt ecologically benign production technologies and political policies, suggesting that modern societies could be on course to alleviate the ecological damage caused by capitalism. These two theories are fundamentally different in their assumptions about modern economies and technologies, yet both can be used as a theoretical lens …

In light of the decline in social acceptance of walking and biking to school, there is a critical need to examine issues impacting school transportation decisions and to identify strategies to promote healthier behavior. In urban areas with high volume freight corridors, factors affecting school walking decisions can be complicated by increased truck and rail traffic. This paper presents findings from a study of urban neighborhoods in a major southeastern city, including those that are adjacent to freight corridors. Perceptions of neighborhood residents are compared in the context of existing infrastructure and network characteristics (urban vs. urban freight-centric). The results …

The following report analyzes answers to pre- and post-tests from care providers regarding asthma knowledge and opinions of asthma. These care providers attended a seminar on asthma sponsored through the American Lung Association with ThinkTV with the purpose of helping care providers better understand the various aspects of dealing with children who have asthma. Seminars were held from July 1st, 2014 through June 30, 2015. There were 426 participants who completed the pre- and post-surveys. Not all participants answered every question. Participants were given a pre-test before the seminar and the same assessment as a post-test after the seminar. Therefore, …

A public opinion survey—in this case a survey of the residents of the City of West Carrollton, Ohio—provides citizens within a community an opportunity to voice their opinions and views on city government, resources and services, and quality of life in West Carrollton. In 2015, APRI (formerly CUPA) conducted an online public opinion survey for the City of West Carrollton and via a telephone interview for residents who wished to participate, but could not because they did not have access to the survey instrument via the internet. This chapter documents a content analysis of 62 media reports related to the 2011 blue-green algae (BGA) outbreak on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Oklahoma. A three-stage crisis model is used to understand the media framing and crisis communication related to the event. Media reports were categorized according to modality. The data set included: traditional media reports (n=21, 33%), online blogs (n=7, 11%), and online press releases (n=34, 54%). These units of analysis represent both controlled and uncontrolled media representations of the crisis event. Although there have been studies that focus on the experiences of the gay and lesbian population serving in the United States military, few have focused on the experience of active duty transgender service members. Transgender individuals transgress the binary conception of gender by deviating from societal gender norms associated with assigned sex at birth. The Department of Defense has set policies and standards that reflect a binary conception of gender, with a focus on conformity. We argue that able-bodied gender variant service personnel are just as capable of serving their country as anyone else. Because of the repercussions associated with …

This article introduces readers to a relatively new self-assessment tool for measuring the readiness and effectiveness of supplier materials management and logistics processes in the automotive industry. The tool, the Material Management Operating Guidelines/Logistics Evaluation (MMOG/ LE), was developed by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), and Odette International – a European alliance of automotive companies. The article begins with an introduction to the topic of quality and materials management assessment systems. A human security approach is applied to all of ITF’s interventions as it provides a dynamic and practical policy framework for addressing widespread and crosscutting threats. This paper introduces a new feminist approach and framework to policy analysis. As an integration of intersectionality, Black feminist thought and endarkened feminist epistemology, enmarginalized feminist policy analysis (EFPA) offers an intersectional and flexible scope in a framework to assess policy for a diversity of populations, focusing on groups who are forced to live marginal and oppressed lives. Discussion is provided on existing approaches and frameworks in addition to an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of EFPA.
