In the last few decades, an unprecedented number of women with children have entered the U.S. workforce. The ability to negotiate the roles of parent and employee is important to the health and financial well-being of these women and their families, but institutional and social barriers impede the process. Using the empirical and theoretical literature on women and work, this article examines these barriers. The authors address the impact of cultural ideals, psychological processes, and public policy on the maternal work-family balance. Several changes that would help create an atmosphere supportive of balance are explored, including increased support for shared …

In order to achieve gender equality, it is critical to resurrect women’s interests as a driving force in the formulation of workforce development policies and programs. Current workforce strategies are centered on helping economically disadvantaged individuals gain employment in high demand industries that offer opportunities to earn family-sustaining wages. Yet many of these high-growth industries consist of male-dominated occupations, which provide lower earnings and advancement potential for women. Because women continue to be channeled into lower-paying fields, demand-driven workforce policies may result in lower earnings for women. This paper summarizes the results of a review of nearly 500 judicial opinions decided as of fall 2006, involving access to protected health information (PHI) and privacy of medical information under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). This review was undertaken to determine whether HIPAA, which permits application of state privacy laws that are more stringent than the federal privacy standard, acts as a legal barrier to the creation of interoperable health information systems that permit transparency of health information. The growth in the acquisition cycle time of large defense systems from what was planned (i.e., schedule growth) creates several issues for defense acquisition managers and policy makers. These issues include increased likelihoods of cancellations, changes in requirements, and delays in the fielding of improved combat capabilities and replacements for legacy systems, which have resulted in further cost and schedule growth. This is an extended case study of a rapid humanitarian assessment and the factors that shaped a long series of decisions during its design and execution. The subject matter-contamination with landmine and Unexploded Ordonance (UXO)- and the settings- Iraq in 2003 and 2004- are almost incidental. The focus is on the rationality of decision-making during the assessment, meaning in this case, the value of the information produced versus the effort needed to produce it.

South Korea has been threatened by North Korea and surrounded by powerful countries since the Korean War in 1950~1953. One resource that maintains South Korea’s security is the strong alliance with the U.S. The primary function of the alliance has been Foreign Military Sales (FMS). As the world circumstances change, South Korea may need more self-reliant defense power that can maintain its security with its own authority.
