Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Co-chaired by Dan Beavon of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Jerry White of the University of Western Ontario, and Peter Dinsdale of the National Association of Friendship Centres, the conference promoted interaction between researchers, policy-makers, and Aboriginal peoples. It expanded knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic determinants of Aboriginal well-being, and sought to identify and facilitate the means by which this knowledge may be translated into effective policies.

Volume III begins with a look at education and employment transitions, followed by issues of socio-economic well-being, and concludes with some international research.

Indigenous Healing Practices Among Rural Elderly African Americans, Debra A. Harley

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Elderly African Americans residing in rural areas have practiced and continue to practice indige- nous healing practices for various reasons. In addition to the belief in the value of such practices, many of these individuals practice indigenous healing because it is cost effective. In this article information is presented on the history of research on indigenous healing practices, theories and models of indigenous healing in the United States, cultural influence, and views of health care providers regarding such practices. Treasure Valley State Of The Region Report: A Preliminary View Of Performance Indicators, Institute For Urban And Regional Planning, Boise State University, Gregory C. Hill, Susan G. Mason, Jim Weatherby

Research and Reports

The Treasure Valley State of the Region Report, while preliminary, describes the Boise- Nampa MSA using 49 indicators on social, economic, fiscal and environmental aspects of the region. Comparisons using the indicators are also made with peer regions in the Western United States. The rapid increase in growth in the Treasure Valley warrants a comprehensive look at the region. The Institute of Urban and Regional Planning in the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs at Boise State University initiated the production of this report to meet this need.

The Nebraska Minority and Justice Implementation Committee is a unique statewide collaboration that works to develop and implement just and sustainable policy reforms that will not only improve the system of justice but will also strengthen public trust and confidence in our laws and court system. The Committee is a joint effort of the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Nebraska Supreme Court, appointed by the Supreme Court in May of 2003 in response to a Task Force’s two-year investigation of racial and ethnic bias and discrimination in Nebraska’s justice system. • Administered Minority and Justice Initiative, which, among other reforms, brought about the passage of two Nebraska state laws to improve the representativeness of juries.
• Awarded $1.5 million to organizations involved in providing behavioral health services to Nebraskans.

Purpose This exercise gives participants an opportunity to evaluate current response concepts, plans, and capabilities for a behavioral health response to an Avian Influenza outbreak. The exercise will focus on key state and local coordination, critical decisions, risk communications and the integration of external assets necessary to minimize the psychological effects of an Avian Influenza outbreak.

The project sought to address two primary problems: the lack of information available to judges issuing orders in cases involving domestic violence regarding other actions and orders that could affect victim safety (e.g., defendant’s criminal history or related criminal, civil, or other PFA actions); and the lack of judicial follow-up to assure that offenders were complying with the requirements of court orders (e.g., probation conditions requiring the offender to obtain mental health or substance abuse treatment, participate in a certified batterer’s intervention program, or obtain other social services.)

This volume is the first comprehensive publication of the almost one thousand prints in the holdings of the United States Senate. The collection represents a 30-year effort to document graphically the 19th and early 20th century history of the Senate, the Capitol, and American political history. The diverse illustrations range from inauguration ceremonies and impeachment trials to senatorial portraits and political cartoons. Represented in the Senate's graphic art collection are some of the most notable artists who worked in the printmaking medium: Augustus Kallner, Rembrandt Peale, Alexander Hay Ritchie, Thomas Nast, and Joseph Keppler.
