In an effort to improve educational opportunities for all students, Arkansas policymakers have made education reforms in many areas since 2003, such as increasing school funding by nearly 30 percent, consolidating both districts with enrollments below 350 students and inefficient schools, and strengthening accountability measures designed to raise academic achievement. However, there is little empirical evidence about how any of these reforms have impacted districts, schools, and students across the state, so policymakers have no way of knowing whether such reforms have the potential to improve student achievement and help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged students and their more …

This document was prepared taking into consideration the current mine/UXO accident rate in the Kingdom of Cambodia. It also takes account of the Prime Minister’s address to the nation on the occasion of Mine Awareness Day 2006, during which he re-iterated the ultimate goal of mine action in Cambodia - to achieve Zero Victims by 2012. This mine risk education strategic plan is designed to help achieve that goal. As agreed by the MRE Technical Working Group, this strategic plan will be reviewed every 2 years to ensure it remains in line with the evolution of mine action in Cambodia.

Recent developments in women’s legislative rights in Jordan, and rising interest in women’s issues throughout the world, have sparked interest in women’s political participation. The purpose of this study is to investigate why, despite numerous advancements for women in Jordanian society, women have not gained greater representation in political processes. This study is based primarily on interviews with 15 Jordanian women between the ages of 18 and 36, as well as interviews with 6 professionals in the field of women’s studies in Jordan. Language Barriers To Health Care Access Among Medicare Beneficiaries, Ninez A. Ponce, Leighton C. Ku, William E. Cunningham, E. Richard Brown

This study examined language barriers to health care access among a population-based sample of Medicare seniors in California in 2001 and 2003. Results indicate that Medicare beneficiaries with limited English proficiency (LEP) had less access to a usual source of care and were less likely to receive preventive cancer screening tests. LEP Medicare beneficiaries who also were covered by Medicaid tended to fare better than those without Medicaid. This could be due to federal civil rights rules that require Medicaid health care providers to offer free language assistance, but exclude from these requirements physicians who provide only Medicare services. Working Toward A Seamless Supply Chain: An Exploratory Analysis Of The Impact Of Supply Chain On Company Performance, Carol J. Johnson, Lidiya Sokhnich, Charles Ng

Journal of Transportation Management

This paper explores the role that several supply chain dimensions play in achieving overall firm performance. Measures suggested in prior studies were factor analyzed for convergent and discriminant validity and then used in a regression model. This study uses data from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) member firms, with top level supply chain managers as informants. The results suggest that of the three dimensions tested, two are significant contributors to firm profitability, including customer service and business process usage. Relationship confidence was not found to significantly impact overall firm performance.

This study reports the distribution, cleanliness and accessibility of bus shelters on the Central New York Regional Transport Authority (Centro) bus lines in Onondaga County. Most of the shelters recorded are located in the City of Syracuse. Based on a literature review, criteria were identified to assess the accessibility of Centro shelters for people with disabilities. Researchers also determined the cleanliness of the shelters and presence of light sources. This study is the first of other research projects that will examine the availability of public transportation to Onondaga County residents. This study explored the perceptions of civil engineers regarding continuing professional competency requirements for license renewal. In this study,continuing professional competency is assumed to have a direct relationship to public welfare and safety. The policy of mandatory continuing education was adopted primarily for this reason. Currently, mandatory continuing education is adopted by 29 states as the method of assuring continued professional competency.

Many professionals, however, have not welcomed this mandatory continuing education (MCE) policy. The reason for this opposition is the claimed ineffectiveness of this policy in fostering continued competency. In addition, the regulatory boards and policy advocates have not …
