The team arrived in the local, approximately 10:40, and tried to park the vehicles in the usual parking area. The right rear of the truck set off an AT mine. The truck was projected to approximately 7 metres high. In the same time five occupants at the back of the truck were projected violently due to the blast effect. [Nine named victims were recorded in the Demining group’s accident spreadsheet, from which I infer that four were in the cab.] Six victims were listed as having suffered no injury.

The Managers turned off the track and drove up to the fence. In doing so they drove straight through the minefield followed by the victims in their vehicle. The lead vehicle drove through three or four rows of VS1.6 anti-tank mines. The following vehicle, with the office staff and the only vehicle radio, activated a VS1.6 anti-tank mine as it followed.

This study tests factors that are most instrumental to high school seniors when selecting postsecondary institutions. Forty-nine students were sampled in a structured telephone interview to ascertain the key factors. Results demonstrate the difference between urban and rural students influencing factors. Implications and a future research agenda are discussed.

Biologists have made considerable progress in developing realistic simulation models to predict extinction risks for threatened species. Social scientists have to date had a more limited role in these efforts. This limited involvement comes despite the growing acknowledgment by population biologists and simulation modelers that this additional input is necessary for these models to accurately reflect the impact of humans and human-dominated landscapes on wildlife populations. We argue that collaborations among social and biological scientists can provide unparalleled opportunities to develop new conceptual and simulation tools for biodiversity risk assessment. The notion of religion being introduced in a public school setting is a controversial and socially divisive topic. When the church encroaches on the state's domain, courts are called upon to adjudicate the matter as a constitutional issue. If public schools impose religion on students, courts invoke the Constitution's Establishment Clause, which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."

Many states, Nebraska included, have been actively developing programs to promote competitive employment for persons with disabilities. Buy-In programs (enabling persons with disabilities with increased earned income to continue to Medicaid eligibility) have become a keystone program in states’ efforts. States are implementing Buy-In programs (and related programs and supports) not as welfare programs, but as programs that help states make productive use of all of their human capital resources. Many policymakers support Buy-In programs as a means to increase workers with disabilities’ participation as productive citizens of states. That is, such programs are seen as a means to “enhance …

People in crisis often require multiple community services. A homeless person may need medical health care and behavioral health care, along with shelter. A woman who is the victim of domestic abuse may need help with childcare, transportation, food, and emergency housing. Comprehensive community initiatives (CCIs) attempt to provide this interrelated range of community services.

CCIs developed as a part of community building efforts in the late 1980’s (Kubisch, 1996; Stagner and Duran, 1997). “Comprehensive” can either refer to an initiative that incorporates social, educational, cultural, physical, and economic development in a community or to an initiative whose purpose is …

A Positive Political Model Of Supreme Court Economic Decisions, Tony Caporale, Harold Winter

We develop a positive political model of the U.S. Supreme Court. Looking at the Court's economic cases for the period 1953-1993, we find a significant larger fraction of conservative decisions under Republican presidents and more conservative leadership of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. Conservative decisions are also found to be positively correlated with the fraction of the Court appointed by Republican presidents and the rate of price inflation. We argue that our findings cast serious doubt on the common view of the Supreme Court as a completely independent, apolitical institution.
