This is commonly known as the last-mile problem and is critical in promoting the utilization of public transportation system. Traditionally, one of the ways traffic flow has been studied is by using the kinematic wave model. This model is studied in the Eulerian framework. Recently, the kinematic wave model has been transformed into Lagrangian coordinates. This model of traffic flow together with the concept of observability for linear time invariant discrete time systems is applied to study the observability of four sections of a freeway in both Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates. State highway agencies are obligated to maintain existing roads for the highway systems to work efficiently and with greater longevity. Every year NDOT is responsible for approximately 13,150 lane miles of existing infrastructure. With that in mind, resources need to be provided to maintain the highway system.

The purpose of this research was to estimate annual routine maintenance cost for several typical treatment methods of highways. Five prioritization categories of highways used by NDOT were considered. Also, many modern policies predicate transit funding on the potential for transit-oriented development (TOD) near proposed infrastructure investments. However, little research has examined how TOD considerations have informed transit planning. This presentation discusses the results of recent dissertation research that fills this gap. Optimizing usage of unimpeded taxiways is a near-term operational change to mitigate emission impact on aviation and increase efficiency at airports. An unimpeded taxiway is a path for an aircraft to taxi around an active runway. Unimpeded taxiways provide benefits such as increased departure throughput, increased safety, reduced surface congestion, more efficient taxi-in procedures, and thereby also yield environmental benefits. In this study, I propose a systematic method of detecting aircraft deviation due to air traffic controller (ATC) intervention. The aircraft deviations associated with ATC interventions are detected using a heuristic algorithm developed from analyzing the actual positions of an aircraft to its filed flight plan when the aircraft trajectories were identified as having an encounter in a loss-of-separation incident. An actual (closed-loop) flight trajectory of the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZOB ARTCC) was collected from the FlightAware database. This was compared with the corresponding planned (open-loop) trajectory dataset generated by the Microsoft© Flight Simulator X (FSX). I …

The manuscript examines individual ethical decision making for common scenarios faced by transportation brokers, including unauthorized double brokering, booking and bouncing, and a failure to disclose all terms to a shipper. The results indicate significant discrepancies between what actions a broker would engage, what brokers perceive that others in the same industry would do, and what industry leaders perceive to be ethical.

The purpose of the “Freight Down the Middle” study is to assess the potential outcomes for New Orleans neighborhoods Hollygrove and Dixon residents if the Middle Belt option is implemented. The study analyzes current regulations, established data on health impacts, engineering specifications, demonstrated mitigation measures, and case studies to illustrate possible impacts on the neighborhoods. The study area focuses specifically on Hollygrove and Dixon, and statistical data at the census tract level is used to give context to the risk factors inherent to the population groups in the area.
