This contribution for the “Law, Ethics, and Gender in Medicine” column in the Journal of Gender Specific Medicine interrogates the understanding of gender itself, at a time when transgender and intersex issues were just beginning to “come out” in both popular culture and case law. Against this background, the column explores the roles that physicians have played in such gender contests and considers how evolving medical attitudes can help achieve reform.

American foreign aid, and the factors contributing to its disbursement, have frequently been discussed in scholarly research. This issue has also developed into a highly contentious issue in US foreign policy. The purpose of this thesis is to determine if recipient states' human rights practices are a determining factor in the aid allocation process. This thesis will analyze the second term of President Clinton's administration to determine if he consistently implemented his foreign policy agenda of democratic enlargement with regard to foreign aid disbursement to Africa. The Mine Action Information Center (MAIC) at James Madison University implemented this project to develop a framework for the systematic collection and management of landmine casualty data. The project was premised on the lack of an adequate system for collecting and managing landmine casualty data on a global basis. Data on landmine and UXO casualties is being collected in a systematic manner in some countries, but worldwide, it is not being collected in a comprehensive or consistent manner that allows it to be compared cross-nationally and aggregated globally. This article explores values, strategies, and tensions found within the War on Poverty and examines a War on Poverty-supported initiative, the National Domestic Workers Union (NDWU). The article makes the argument that the NDWU is illustrative of the War on Poverty in that each held structurally based descriptions of poverty and individually based prescriptions. The article explores the relationship of domestic service to the institutions of racism, classism, and sexism and how the ND WU strategies of training, service, and, advocacy-like those of the War on Poverty-sought to address the needs of individual domestic workers while circumventing larger and more …

Starting in June 1991, the Indian government introduced a number of liberalising measures, including significant tariff reduction, abolition of all quantitative restrictions on non-consumer goods, unification of the exchange rates, and adoption of a liberal set of rules for FDI, and introduction of current account convertibility. While the industrial reforms seek to bring about a greater competitive domestic environment, the trade reforms seek to improve international competitiveness. The private sector is allowed in many industries that were earlier exclusively reserved for the public sector. 祖國大陸和臺灣相繼加入WTO ，加上中國單獨關稅區的香港、澳門， WTO 就有四個中國會員。由于中國的特殊情況，兩岸入世使祖國大陸、臺灣、香港和澳門四地之間的經貿關係將逐步發生重大變化。這需要我們面對現實，從長計議，客觀地探討WTO 框架下兩岸四地經貿關係的走勢，並由此作出基本判斷。

基于上述考慮， 這裏提出這樣一個初步設想: 建立“中國自由貿易區"。”中國自由貿易區"的主要內涵是，在“兩岸四地" 逐漸建立起一種要素無障礙流動的自由貿易的關係，它比一般WTO 成員之間貿易互惠更進一步，將具體體現 ”兩岸四地” 之間一個國家幾個關稅區的特殊關係。

This essay argues that the 1996 reforms to the American welfare state have no historical precedent. They are not a return to "the poorhouse era" and are radically distinct from Great Britain's new poor law of 1834, to which they are often compared. America is the first advanced capitalist country to jettison a significant element of its welfare state and, as such, is moving into waters that are uncharted and dangerous.
