United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …

This report examines the energy situation to ascertain whether crisis conditions really exist. In the broadest terms, this means a close look at two things: supplies and consumption. The wolf (Canis lupus) is a wide-ranging social carnivore with a complex spatial organization (MECH, 1972; 1973). The precise manner in which this organization is maintained is unknown, but territory advertisement using olfactory and acoustic modes seems to be involved.

The acoustic mode includes primarily howling. Within a wolf pack, howling may be useful to reassemble separated members (MECH, 1966; THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967), and may communicate information on individual identity, location, and other behavioral and environmental contingencies (THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967). Between packs, however, howling may serve to advertise territory, communicating the locations of packs and thus …

Small energy consumers are defined as residential energy consumers, small businesses and agricultural operations, schools, hospitals and state and local governments. Sources of these fumes and mist may be welding processes or metal machining. Unions and various government agencies may exert pressures to remove? this air pollution.

The Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning system for this ten (10) story (400,000 S.F.) office building is of unique design. The only form of heat in the building is 1400 radiant ceiling panels of 500 watts each located around the perimeter of the building. The supply air for cooling is controlled by a variable air volume system. This supply air is delivered to exterior and interior zones. Variable air volume boxes serve both of these zones and the boxes are controlled by wall mounted thermostats. These thermostats are located on a 30 foot by 30 foot grid system. With this …

The stratiform method of dome construction was invented in response to the need for energy conserving space enclosures. Polyurethane foam and concrete are»spray applied in sequential layers on the inside of a balloon air-form. This process results in structures which require approximately one-tenth of the building materials with which to build them, and one-third of the energy with which to heat or cool them.
