PCOM Psychology Dissertations
This study investigated the neuropsychological and behavioral profiles seen in children diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type (IA), inattentive type plus an internalizing disorder (IA + INT), combined type (CT), and combined type plus an externalizing disorder (CT + EXT). Subjects were 63 unmedicated children aged 6 to 16 who had been assessed with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Fourth Edition (WISC–IV), Conners’ Continuous Performance Test-Second Edition (CPT–II), and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Group differences were found for the WISC–IV Digits Backward subtest (IA + INT IA and IA + INT), and externalizing behavior scales on the CBCL and TRF …
The Relationship Between Prenatal Alcohol Exposure And Special Education Eligibility For Children In New Jersey: Early Intervention Is Key, Jacquē L. Jones
The Relationship Between Prenatal Alcohol Exposure And Special Education Eligibility For Children In New Jersey: Early Intervention Is Key, Jacquē L. Jones
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Depending upon the amount of alcohol consumed by the mother during pregnancy and when the consumption occurred during fetal development, a child may develop fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), alcohol-related birth defects, or alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder, all of which are under the umbrella category of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Children in whom a presumptive diagnosis has been made, such as FAS, are automatically eligible to receive early intervention services, regardless of whether the child demonstrates developmental delays. The purpose of the current study is to provide support for the notion that the Early Intervention System should broaden its FAS automatic …
Preschool Teachers' Perceptions Of Obesity At Ages 3-5 Years, Jessica D. Mackinney
Preschool Teachers' Perceptions Of Obesity At Ages 3-5 Years, Jessica D. Mackinney
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this study was not only to investigate the knowledge of preschool teachers on the topic of obesity, but also to determine whether or not they find obesity to be a significant problem facing 3-5 year old children. Results indicate that preschool teachers agree that obesity is a concern; however, they are unclear on the causality of obesity. Preschool teachers feel the long-term consequences of being obese at ages 3-5 years affect future academic, social, and physical growth, but they do not feel intervention should take place at the preschool level. This study contributed to a better understanding …
Efficacy Of A Self-Monitoring Technique To Improve Academic Skill Production, Carrie L. Winfield
Efficacy Of A Self-Monitoring Technique To Improve Academic Skill Production, Carrie L. Winfield
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
This study examined archival data from an assisted self-graphing intervention for improving early literacy skills in first grade students from one elementary school. The purpose of the investigation is to examine the use of a self-graphing supplemental intervention that occurred outside of the class-wide first grade reading instruction. The participants included first grade students from three classroom settings in one predominately middle class, suburban school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. The participants formed three groups: (1) 8 students in a DIBELS Progress Monitoring and Self-Graphing Intervention group (PM + SG group); (2) 9 students in a DIBELS Progress Monitoring-only group (PM …
Teachers' Understanding Of Components Of Response To Intervention (Rti) In Pennsylvania, Gabrielle Wilcox
Teachers' Understanding Of Components Of Response To Intervention (Rti) In Pennsylvania, Gabrielle Wilcox
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Since recent regulations allow the use of response to intervention (RTI) for specific learning disability determination, many districts have implemented RTI. This study surveyed a stratified random sample of 2,000 teachers in Pennsylvania with 141 usable responses. The purpose of this study was to ascertain teacher understanding of components of RTI in districts using and not using RTI and to determine if district implementation procedures impacted perceived effectiveness. Overall, the groups were similar in understanding and perceived importance of RTI components; however, there were small but notable differences. Respondents with higher levels of perceived effectiveness indicated greater support from a …

The present study, using shelf data, described a quantitative research project which attempted to propound and answer questions about the nature of school refusal in a Pennsylvania school district. The study analyzed shelf data that surveyed 40 students and parents in grades 2 through 11th who missed more than ten percent of 2007-2008 school year. Using shelf data collected by the GNA school district which consisted of parent and student surveys, this study investigated the different reasons why students refuse to attend school. Furthermore, this study also examined common characteristics found among school-refusing students in the Greater Nanticoke Area School …
A Study Of The Cognitive Profiles Of Medicated And Nonmedicated Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Amy E. Mclaughlin
A Study Of The Cognitive Profiles Of Medicated And Nonmedicated Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Amy E. Mclaughlin
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is among the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders, with symptoms that can cause significant difficulties in the educational setting. Deficits related to working memory and processing speed are thought to be a core feature of ADHD. As such, research using traditional measures of cognitive functioning has shown that children diagnosed with ADHD tend to perform poorly on measures of processing speed and working memory, relative to non-ADHD individuals and relative to measures of other cognitive abilities. Psychostimulant medication is a common treatment for ADHD and research overwhelmingly supports its positive impact on behavior and concentration; however, …
Exploration Of Specific Learning Disability Subtypes Differentiated Across Cognitive, Achievement, And Emotional/Behavioral Variables, Lisa A. Hain
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The emphasis on the ability-achievement discrepancy approach for SLD identification diminished the importance of robust examination into patterns of cognitive strengths and weaknesses as related to achievement deficits. This approach directed attention away from related psychosocial deficits previously reported in this population by concentrating on the quantitative differences between standard scores. The cognitive and academic deficits of children with SLD have been well studied, but little is known about the emotionaVbehavioral functioning of children with SLD, and even less about the interconnections between the neurocognitive and emotional/behavioral systems. Children with disparate types of neurocognitive assets and deficits may experience learning …
Use Of Kindergarten Screening Assessments For The Identification Of At-Risk Readers, Kathryn S. Gipe
Use Of Kindergarten Screening Assessments For The Identification Of At-Risk Readers, Kathryn S. Gipe
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Early identification of students at-risk for reading problems has become a national priority. At the present time, the most commonly used kindergarten screening methods are self-made by local districts and are not considered effective methods of early detection for at-risk readers. This retrospective study involved third, fourth and fifth grade students enrolled in a suburban elementary school during the 2007-2008 school year. The first research question examined the relationship between at-risk status determined with the Kindergarten Screening measure prior to entry into kindergarten and at-risk status determined by Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills measures administered in the fall …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Student Performance On The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test With Other Clinical Measures, Lisa A. Perkins
An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Student Performance On The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test With Other Clinical Measures, Lisa A. Perkins
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is widely used for neuropsychological assessment of executive functions. Although the literature notes that the WCST is a measure of abstract reasoning and cognitive flexibility, there has been little data relative to the constructs that are assessed when the test is used with children or to the relationship between WCST performance and performance on other child assessment tools. This study of 94 children and adolescents referred for psychological evaluations investigated the relationship between scores obtained on the WCST and scores from child and adult versions of the Wechsler intelligence scales and the Delis-Kaplan Executive …

Kindergarten Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies With English Language Learners : An Empirical Dissertation, Shirley R. Mackley
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The Kindergarten Peer-Assisted Literacy Strategies (K-PALS) program is a supplemental, collaborative intervention designed to complement the current curriculum within schools (Mathes, Clancy-Menchetti, & Torgesen, 2001). The K-PALS program has been cited as a "best practice" by the National Reading Panel (National Reading Panel, 2000). This study utilized a supplemental cooperative learning intervention with 48 Kindergarten students and answered the following questions: (1) Did students make gains in basic reading skills?; (2) Did the K-PALS ESL students make more gains than the Control group ESL students?; (3) Did the K-PALS non-ESL students make more gains than the Control group non-ESL students?; …
Caretaker Ratings Of Attention Problems In Maltreated Children : The Effects Of Gender, Age, And Type Of Maltreatment, Dawn M. Mcdonald
Caretaker Ratings Of Attention Problems In Maltreated Children : The Effects Of Gender, Age, And Type Of Maltreatment, Dawn M. Mcdonald
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Child maltreatment is a severe stressor which is associated with a variety of adverse outcomes, including attention, learning, and behavior problems. Attention problems are common in maltreated children, with rates of ADHD in samples of abused and neglected children consistently higher than those found in the general population or in clinical samples of children without abuse histories. Despite the association between ADHD and maltreatment, attention problems in maltreated children remain poorly characterized and not well understood. In an attempt to better delineate the nature of attention problems in maltreated children, this study examined the effects of age, gender, type of …
Reading Development In At-Risk Kindergarten Students: A Tier 2 Response-To-Intervention Rti Program Using Research-Based Principles In Early Literacy, Kathleen T. Pickard
Reading Development In At-Risk Kindergarten Students: A Tier 2 Response-To-Intervention Rti Program Using Research-Based Principles In Early Literacy, Kathleen T. Pickard
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Early identification of struggling readers and direct instruction for these readers are effective in the prevention and treatment of reading problems (Torgesen, 2002). The practice of "wait-tofail" is being challenged by the responsiveness to intervention (RTI) models, which promote early identification of at-risk students, progress monitoring, and implementation of researched-based tiered interventions. The prereading skills that have been identified as being necessary for future reading achievement include phonological awareness, letter identification, the alphabetic principle, orthography, and rapid automatized naming. The purpose of this CUl1'ent study is to examine the effectiveness of a Tier 2 intervention program that targets these essential …

Qualitative Analysis Of The Implementation Of An Autism Program Within A Public School District, Lucila F. Hernandez
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The study analyzed the development, implementation and success of an educational program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis within a public school structure. Records reviewed for a two year time period identified four phases to program development and implementation, as well as identifying themes and barriers for specific roles, administration, staff and parents. The success of the program is evidenced by growth in the children and by reported satisfaction of parents and staff. A program blue print offers an outline to program development and implementation. Necessary ASD program components, based on literature reviewed are summarized. This study highlights …
Breaking The "Sound" Barrier To Fluent Reading: An Evaluation Of A Middle School Reading Intervention, Kimberly Simmerman
Breaking The "Sound" Barrier To Fluent Reading: An Evaluation Of A Middle School Reading Intervention, Kimberly Simmerman
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The failure to read efficiently accounts for nearly 80% of the children who meet the criteria for a specific learning disability in America. Moreover, many of those children do not receive instruction that is sufficient to improve their reading achievement to within the average range. The current study examines the Breaking the “Sound” Barrier to Fluent Reading program by comparing pretest and posttest scores on individually administered and group statewide tests of reading achievement. The impact of IQ on progress is evaluated and discussed. Students’levels of reading proficiency preintervention and postintervention, as determined by the criteria set forth by the …

Impact Of Participation In A Community Based, Even Start Literacy Program On School Achievement And Parent Involvement For English Language Learners (Ell), Elvira I. Zuazo-Legido
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The family literacy model underlying the national Even Start Family Literacy Program has not fared well in large-scale evaluation studies, with outcomes showing minimal or no positive impact on later school achievement. However, the results of these studies have not been replicated in smaller studies, which hold the possibility of yielding richer and possibly more valid data using appropriate research design, methods, and techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an Even Start Family Literacy Program on the academic progress of a homogeneous group of ELL (English Language Learners) Hispanic immigrant elementary school-age children. Twenty-nine …

PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this longitudinal study was to profile Reading Recovery students in one district to examine: (1) the content and predictability of the district’s early intervention screening assessments and progress monitoring tools, (2) the initial and (3) sustained effectiveness of the Reading Recovery preventative program relative to student achievement in first through third grades (4) rates of identification of educational disabilities and special education placements and (5) common variables in intellectual, process, and achievement characteristics of those students who were slow to respond to reading interventions. Participants consisted of students from fifteen elementary schools, within the years 2000 to …
The Complex Nature Of Bullying: Perceptions Of Bullying In Elementary Schools, Shaheen R. Fazelbhoy
The Complex Nature Of Bullying: Perceptions Of Bullying In Elementary Schools, Shaheen R. Fazelbhoy
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Bullying has emerged as a serious threat to the safety of children within school environments. Once attributed to normal childhood behavior, research shows that there is nothing normal about the physical and emotional consequences of bullying. The effects of this trauma may last long after the actual bullying is over. If undetected and untreated, bullying has the possibility of creating a climate of fear and anxiety that can affect children physically, emotionally and academically. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of whether behaviors defined as bullying are identified as such by teachers, whether the impact …
Study Of The Cognitive Functioning Of Medicated And Non-Medicated Elementary School-Aged Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Janet Friedman
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a serious disability that has been shown to adversely affect cognition, affect, and behavior. Research using traditional measures of cognitive functioning, such as intelligence tests has shown that children diagnosed with ADHD perform poorly on cognitive measures of processing speed, and on working memory in particular (Kerns, Mclnerney & Wilde, 2001; Weiler, Bernstein, Bellinger & Waber, 2000). Mahone, et al. (2003), note that reviews involving the Wechsler Scales for children suggest that Full Scale IQ scores (FSIQ) on the WISC-III average 5 to 6 points lower than scores in the WISC-R. It was hypothesized …
Assessing Patterns Of Social Engagement In Typically Developing Children, Children With Mental Retardation, And Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using A Standardized Playground Observation Checklist, Daniel H. Ingram
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Prior research in the area of play in children suggests that children's interactions with one another can predict their social competence, their social skill development, and their ability to establish and maintain social relationships. However, most prior research has been carried out in contrived playgroups under adult direction or supervision; few studies have been carried out in naturalistic settings without adult interference. This retrospective, predictive study reviewed archival data to assess similarities and differences in playground interactions between typical children, children with mental retardation, and children with autism spectrum disorder. The study introduced a structured playground observation checklist in order …
