Moderating Effects Of School Ethnic Composition On The Associations Between Cultural Variables And Academic Outcomes Among Latinx Youth, Juan Estrada
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cultural factors such as acculturative stress, discrimination and ethnic identity have been shown to relate to Latinx students’ academic outcomes, with the first two being risk factors, while the last one primarily plays a protective role. Factors that modify or change these relationships have been studied by both psychological and educational researchers, in efforts to inform interventions. One area of interest is school ethnic contexts, specifically school ethnic representation (number of same-ethnic peers) and school ethnic diversity (proportion of different ethnic groups in student body). This study investigated whether these two school ethnic variables changed or influenced the relationship between …
The Relationship Of Gender-Based Microaggressions And Internalized Sexism On Mental Health Outcomes: A Mother-Daughter Study, Nicole D. Feigt
The Relationship Of Gender-Based Microaggressions And Internalized Sexism On Mental Health Outcomes: A Mother-Daughter Study, Nicole D. Feigt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Subtle occurrences of discrimination, insults, and slights against gender can impact woman of all ages, although little research has been done on the mental health impacts of these events on adolescents or middle-aged women. Additionally, a person’s own views on sex roles and sexism may impact how these events affect them. The following study examined the relationship between mothers and daughters on variables related to ambivalent sexism, gender-based microaggressions, and anxiety and depression. One hundred two mothers and their adolescent daughters completed various online surveys through the use of a Qualtrics panel. The sample was fairly representative, with respondents varying …
Contextual Factors In The Identity Development Of Native American And Latinx Undergraduates In Stem Fields, Angela Marie Enno
Contextual Factors In The Identity Development Of Native American And Latinx Undergraduates In Stem Fields, Angela Marie Enno
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study includes two papers that aimed to provide insights into the experiences of high-achieving Latinx and Native American college students studying science. We wanted to better understand factors that influence these students’ ability to develop a sense of identity that weaves together their hoped-for careers as scientists as well as their cultural identities. We looked at how they feel about working with mentors in science fields who were like them in a variety of ways. We found that many students (especially those with a stronger sense of cultural identity) valued working with mentors who were similar to them in …
The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Checklists And Performance Feedback On Study Skills Of College Students With Disabilities, Sherrie Mecham
The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Checklists And Performance Feedback On Study Skills Of College Students With Disabilities, Sherrie Mecham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study utilized a multiple baseline design across two study skills to examine the impact of a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback on the implementation of study skills for seven college students with disabilities. The accuracy with which students performed study skills was calculated as a percentage based on the number of correct study skill steps completed during a college course divided by the total number of treatment steps. The results show that three of the seven students markedly increased the accurate use of the notetaking and study guide skills immediately when provided with a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback, …
Utah High School Sophomore Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Non-Traditional Vocational Career Choices, Ellen S. Walch
Utah High School Sophomore Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Non-Traditional Vocational Career Choices, Ellen S. Walch
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Role behaviors for men and women in our society are undergoing change. Research data to reveal student attitudes toward these role behaviors and choices were needed for the development of strategies to eliminate sex bias and sex stereotyping in our educational programs and ultimately in the socialization process.
The purpose of the study was to collect research data to determine Utah high school student attitudes toward women's roles and non-traditional vocational career choices. The survey instrument used to collect the data was constructed, pilot tested, factor analyzed, and revised prior to its administration to the sample. The revised instrument contained …
Teacher Attention As A Controlling Influence Of Student Classroom Behavior, Lagrande E. Smith
Teacher Attention As A Controlling Influence Of Student Classroom Behavior, Lagrande E. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis was to assess the influence of the teachers' classroom behavior on students' classroom behavior. Three hypotheses were made as the teacher systematically increases positive responses and decreases negative responses in the classroom, 1) the total time spent with the misbehaving student will decrease, 2) student non-attentive behavior will decrease and student attentive behavior will increase, and 3) there will be an inverse relationship between teacher negative responses and student attentive behavior.
Student subjects were selected randomly from a previously selected group of misbehaving students; teacher subjects were 12 volunteers from a Junior High School who …
The Development Of Career Activities For Fourth Grade Students, Barbara P. M. Southwick
The Development Of Career Activities For Fourth Grade Students, Barbara P. M. Southwick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Today's youth have few real contacts with the work world and have little knowledge of what is expected from them. Many grade school youngsters are not aware of the type of work their parents are doing. Some do not even know where their parents work. It is difficult for most elementary students to see the relationship between their present school activities and their future life. And all too often, students can not express personal goals or plans.
As students become more aware of the world of work, they should be better prepared to enter it and they should also develop …
A Follow-Up Of Decision Changes From The Act Profile For Freshmen At Usu, Brent M. Hinze
A Follow-Up Of Decision Changes From The Act Profile For Freshmen At Usu, Brent M. Hinze
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Decision making and decision changes were studied in late adolescents regarding post-high school choices. A branching questionnaire was constructed and mailed to 1239 late adolescents who during the preceding year had indicated on the American College Test (ACT) that Utah State University (USU) was their first choice for college attendance, but whose names did not appear on the USU Registrar's list of enrolled freshmen, Fall 1969. 62% of the questionnaires were returned. Questions were asked concerning post-high school decision making and decision change:
- What alternatives to attendance at USU were chosen?
- Was the alternative chosen college-related or was the change …
College Level Career Counseling, Ain Roost
College Level Career Counseling, Ain Roost
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was designed to examine and evaluate vocational decision making and counseling at Utah State University and to provide a basis for further research. A written questionnaire was given to a random sample of 500 college students on the Utah State University campus.
It was found that over 15% of freshmen could not express a vocational choice, and of those who could, their commitment to it was weaker than the other classes. Immediate family, friends and college professors were the most influential people in making a career choice, with the influence of college counselors being almost negligible. Other than influential …
N-Achievement Motivation Of Male Navaho Indian Students As Measured By An Acculturated N-Achievement Scale, Rex C. Ivory
N-Achievement Motivation Of Male Navaho Indian Students As Measured By An Acculturated N-Achievement Scale, Rex C. Ivory
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problem which formed the basis of this research was to answer the question: "Can an acculturated version of McClelland's original n-Achievement scale be significantly more effective in measuring n-Achievement motivation of male Navaho Indian subjects than McClelland's original n-Achievement scale?" An answer to this question would hopefully be reason enough for using an acculturated n-Achievement scale to provide new information relative to the Navaho Indian's need to achieve.
The major underlying objective of this study was to develop a more effective projective scale than McClelland in measuring a Navaho Indian's n-Achievement motivation. This objective was not reached; however, the …
Conditioning Verbal Behavior: The Effect Of Experimenter Baseline Behavior On The Conditioning Of Opinion Statements Emitted By Undergraduate Students, William E. Greable
Conditioning Verbal Behavior: The Effect Of Experimenter Baseline Behavior On The Conditioning Of Opinion Statements Emitted By Undergraduate Students, William E. Greable
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The general purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the operant conditioner's behavior during the baseline upon subsequent operant conditioning of opinion statements emitted by freshmen undergraduate students. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following research questions:
- Is it possible to systematically condition opinion statements in a verbal conditioning situation that resembles a counseling interview?
- Does the behavior of the operant conditioner during the baseline have any influence on subsequent conditioning of opinion statements in a verbal conditioning situation resembling a counseling interview?
- Is there a difference in the number of opinion statements emitted in a …

A Longitudinal Evaluation Of The Ogden City Head Start Program, Robert D. Eyestone
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study attempted to investigate the differences in the Head Start population of the Ogden City Schools and to determine if the differences had a significant influence on ability comparisons. An attempt was also made to evaluate the longitudinal benefits of Head Start training. The original data was collected in the 1966-67 evaluation of the Head Start program. Additional data was collected as this original group of Head Start children progressed through kindergarten, first, and second grades.
Variables considered in this study were, residence, age, sex, socio-economic deprivation, family constellation, and ethnic group. In addition, a comparison was made of …
Cpi Achievement Motivation Scales In Differential Prediction Of Academic Achievement, Dwight J. Petersen
Cpi Achievement Motivation Scales In Differential Prediction Of Academic Achievement, Dwight J. Petersen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The grade-point average (GPA) of 4 groups of college sophomores, representing high and low scores on the CPI Ac and Ai scales, was analyzed to test the hypothesis that conforming and independent achievement motivation (as measured by the CPI) is related to scholastic achievement reflective of conforming or independent behavior. Specific hypotheses regarding differential achievement as a function of Ac and Ai scores were tested and, in general, supported. From this study, it was found that the CPI Ac and Ai scales do provide a basis for differentially predicting the scholastic achievement of students in settings rewarding dependent and/or independent …
Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder
Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this study it was hypothesized that the ability to mentally solve II story type" problems, those presented in the form of sentences, is significantly related to one's spatial reasoning ability and that a weakness in this ability, when tested by the "story type" problems, could be compensated for by training in and utilization of overt "paper and pencil" manipulations.
To test the hypothesis, three measures were used. These were the DAT Verbal Reasoning test--used to control the factor of verbal reasoning, the DAT Space Relations test--used to measure spatial reasoning ability, and two forms of a test composed of …

Six hundred fifty-five graduates from the 1964, 1965 and 1966 graduating classes made up the sample. The grades used were those received during their three years in high school. The tests were the Henmon-Nelson Test of Mental Ability administered in the tenth grade and the American College Test which was taken in the twelfth grade. The Pearson r Correlation Coefficient was used to make the correlations. …
Variation In The Order Of Presentation Of Cues As One Variable In Concept Organization, John E. Genasci
Variation In The Order Of Presentation Of Cues As One Variable In Concept Organization, John E. Genasci
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the experiment, with forty-eight students as subjects, a series of nonsense syllables (DAX, MEF, TOV, VIC, YOP, ZIP, and ZIL) were to be associated with four geometric figures. The task was so arranged that Zip applied to all figures, Dax and Vic to subsets of two figures each, and the remaining were individual labels. In each of three experiments there was an experimental group that received pre-response cueing by means of an analogy which involved hierarchic concepts in the same general form, i. e ., animal, wild, tame, and individual names.
The results suggest that the order and timing …
The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen
The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
From the observations of counselors and teachers within our school district there seem to be these indications: (a) That many failing students are experiencing personal adjustment problems due to a faulty self concept and that they tend to behave in terms of how they perceive themselves, or according to the role forced on them by others. So if they have been labeled as a failing student this is the role they perceive for themselves and they tend to behave in terms of the role they perceive for themselves. (b) Non-promoted students who have been retained seem to have a lower …
Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles
Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave
A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Public awareness of the problem of mental retardation is relatively new. Professional services in this area are less than one hundred and fifty years old in America. In essence, the treatment of the mentally retarded since ancient times has been very harsh. The Spartans from ancient Greece left all defectives exposed to the elements to die. They were treated with aversion and subjected to many indignities.

Pupil Attitudes Toward School, Peers, And Teachers Under Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Systems In Weber And Ogden School Districts, Val R. Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attitudes are usually defined as feelings for or against something (Remmers and Gage, 1955). They are very important in the lives of people because they help determine future success in an individual's life. Because of them one works to get the things he wants, one votes for or against certain issues, one joins a cause, opposes something, or attempts to influence others.
Children's Friends In Ability Vs. Randomly Grouped Classrooms, Nolan Kay Griffin
Children's Friends In Ability Vs. Randomly Grouped Classrooms, Nolan Kay Griffin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For over forty years ability grouping has been of professional concern to educators in the United States (Reisner, 1936). There have been fundamental changes in educational theory and practice during that time, one of which is the recognition that educational practices must adjust to individual differences. The interpretation of "equal opportunity" in education has gradually changed from meaning the same methods, standards, and course content for all children, to meaning the full opportunity for each child to develop his own potential in a school program suited to his individual capacities and needs.
The interpersonal relationships and social development of school …
A Comparison Of Aspiration Levels Of Students In Ability-Grouped And Randomly-Grouped Schools, George Aaron Jeffs
A Comparison Of Aspiration Levels Of Students In Ability-Grouped And Randomly-Grouped Schools, George Aaron Jeffs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Grouping students with in the school setting has long been a concern to all those associated with the educative process. Much investigation has been devoted to the position of level of aspiration as influential motive forces for educational, occupational, and social achievement. Many avenues of grouping have been investigated and some very thoroughly. However, research concerning grouping in relation to level of aspiration in the school setting appears to be extremely limited. This study is designed to further investigate this issue. It might be said that this study consists of essentially two phases: (1) the development of instruments for measuring …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Because of the rapid advancements being made in the field of knowledge, educators, as well as those in other fields, must periodically take inventory. Current practices, policies, and methods must be carefully scrutinized to determine if they are the most effective. The group or class method of instruction is one such area.
A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning
A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
That each is born with differing capacities and potentials is self-evident. Both students and teachers should accept as their right and duty the task of bringing to full fruition these latent potentialities.
It is a cause of concern in the nation, among parents and teachers, and in later years among students themselves, that many of our youth fail to achieve that of which they are capable. This is a loss to society and a disappointment to the individual.
The purpose of this study is to add to the growing fund of knowledge concerning factors related to this important area of …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner
A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relative advantages or disadvantages associated with the practice of grouping school children according to ability level has long been the subject of considerable discussion among educators. The general tendency has been for educators to divide into two camps: Those who expound the various merits of homogeneous grouping, and those who favor and support heterogeneous grouping practices. Less common, but acknowledged, are those educators who favor a combination of the two methods. Research dealing with the relative value of either method has usually been concerned with only one aspect of the problem--that of academic achievement. However, the efforts of several …
The Teaching Machine As A Study Aid At The College Level, John R. Cragun
The Teaching Machine As A Study Aid At The College Level, John R. Cragun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most interesting and challenging problems to confront those interested in the learning process in recent years is the entire area of the self-instructional device, or "teaching machine." The idea of the teaching machine is not new, for Pressey (49) in 1926 wrote concerning a device he had developed, and at the same time indicated that he had had such a device in mind for "a number of years." After this introduction by Pressey, the teaching machine movement lay dormant for several years with only an occasional article written that had any direct relationship to this area. This …
A Survey Of The Use Of Standardized Tests In The Junior High Schools Of Weber County, Ashlaug J. Jackson
A Survey Of The Use Of Standardized Tests In The Junior High Schools Of Weber County, Ashlaug J. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is evident from the literature reviewed that there is a need for better understanding and utilization of standardized test results. It seems that unless tests contribute to the learning process they are not justifiable. Merritt (12, p. 66) says the main objective of all endeavor is to promote learning. Ultimately, the worth of any activity carried on in the schools has to be judged by the contribution this activity makes toward the improvement of learning. Testing is no exception. In a broad sense, desirable learning has taken place when behavior has been changed in socially approved directions. Testing is …
A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes
A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is apparent to college workers that inadequate adjustment to college loses many potential scholars to the world. It is further apparent that many students fall short of realizing their full capabilities because of lack of adjustment. To meet this condition, more and more colleges and universities are instituting and developing counseling services. Because of the increases cost of such service and the extended time involved, it has become apparent that any device which improves the efficiency of counseling is highly desirable.
