Citizen Satisfaction Survey Data: A Mode Comparison Of The Derived Importance–Performance Approach, Mitchel Norman Herian, Alan J. Tomkins

The purpose of this article is to provide evidence regarding the comparability of results provided by two survey methods—a random phone survey and a nonrandom online survey—using the derived importance–performance approach to examine service satisfaction data at the local level. Specifically, we measure whether nonprobability opt-in online survey results produce results that are convergent or divergent to random phone survey results. The findings show that the phone and online survey techniques yield divergent results when simple univariate statistical techniques are employed but produce similar results when the data are analyzed using the more advanced derived importance approach. This paper is the methodology section of my doctoral dissertation that outlines the Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Method of research as it has been taught to me by Amedeo P. Giorgi. Giorgi (2009) based his method on Husserl’s descriptive phenomenological philosophy as an alternative epistemology for human science research. This method section references Giorgi’s work and the phenomenological tradition of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and others. Each step of Giorgi’s (2009) modified Husserlian method is described and explained in the context of doing psychological research on the lived-experience of the participants in my dissertation research. In his 1910 book, How We Think, John Dewey proclaimed that “the most important factor in the training of good mental habits consists in acquainting the attitude of suspended conclusion. . .” This Article explores that insight and describes its meaning and significance in the enterprise of thinking generally and its importance in law school education specifically. It posits that the law would be best served if lawyers think like thinkers and adopt an attitude of suspended conclusion in their problem solving affairs. Automation Can Lead To Confounds In Text Analysis: Back, Küfner, And Egloff (2010) And The Not-So-Angry Americans, Cynthia L. S. Pury

Automated text analysis facilitates research using large archival data sets but can be confounded by automatically generated repeating entries. Back, Kufner, and Egloff (2010) used Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC; Pennebaker, Francis, & Booth, 2001) to analyze pager messages sent to more than 85,000 American pagers on September 11, 2001. They found that anger, as indexed by the words contained in those messages, rose steadily throughout the day.

The data contained many technical codes; thus, Back et al. counted only words recognized by LIWC. However, this procedure did not exclude automatically generated messages. Consequently, LIWC words in such messages …

Police officers must be able to make an accurate appraisal of a lethal encounter and respond with appropriate force to mitigate the threat to their own lives and to the lives of others.
