Transgender people experience disproportionate rates of discrimination and marginalization. These negative life experiences influence mental health, such that trans people often struggle with poor mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, a transgender sample was examined to see whether these mental health outcomes were different between trans men and trans women. Based on the previous research done in this area, I hypothesized that trans women would report higher rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Children who are hard of hearing are at risk for developmental language and academic delays compared with children with normal hearing. Some work suggests that high-order cognitive function, including fluid intelligence, may relate to language and academic outcomes in children with hearing loss, but findings in these studies have been mixed and to date, there have been no studies of the wholebrain neural dynamics serving fluid intelligence in the context of hearing loss. Introduction: We propose a working model of compassion fatigue resilience by identifying compassion fatigue (CF) and compassion satisfaction correlates as potential targets for building resilience. Further, we explore focusing on pre-professionals as a method of primary prevention of CF.

Methods: The participants were 143 college students who completed self-report measures to assess current CF, self-care behaviors, self-care beliefs, self-esteem, frequency of helping behaviors, and exposure to others under extreme stress.

Results: Notably, hierarchical regression analyses (controlling for helping frequency and exposure to high stress individuals) suggested that self-care beliefs and self-care behaviors contributed to concurrent experiences of CF, through secondary …

The aim of this study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of improvisation, how it is manifested in communication, and to conceptualize the process of improvisation in general. I aimed to construct a model for use in teaching and further analysis of training programs that target and develop improvisation skills in communication. The ability to communicate is part and parcel of psychologists’ work. I develop and supervise interactive classes and training programs to promote improvisation and communication skills, using the grounded theory of improvisation in communication under conditions of high uncertainty. Background and Objectives: Lumbar spinal stenosis is one of the most common causes of disability in the elderly and often necessitates surgical intervention in patients over the age of 65. Our study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of interlaminar stabilization following decompressive laminectomy in patients with lumbar stenosis without instability. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with lumbar stenosis underwent decompressive laminectomy and interlaminar stabilization at our academic institution. In this study, we explore the effectiveness of Clinical decision-making (CDM) interventions on diagnostic accuracy among medical professionals. Diagnostic errors are one the most prominent issues in healthcare systems and tackling this issue is of great importance. Our results showed a positive effect between CDM interventions and diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, the implementation of CDM interventions is key to improving the quality of care in our health care systems and patient-provider relationships.

This meta-analysis explores the effects of resilience interventions on mental health indicators. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidality have risen in undergraduate student populations, so an intervention is essential to combat such conditions.

To systematically select studies for inclusion, we executed an initial scoping review to determine viability and feasibility of this project. After scoping, our team applied predetermined search strings to 9 electronic databases and after removing 2 duplicates, our initial pool contained 90 peer-reviewed reports. Of the 90 screened abstracts, 59 were excluded based upon predetermined exclusion criteria. The 31 remaining studies were evaluated via full-text review and …

Take A Break: Study Breaks’ Effects On Media Multitasking, Madison Scott, Laird Edman

The current study aims to determine if timed study breaks will affect students’ amounts of media multitasking while studying. Participants were 43 college students from a small, faith based liberal arts college in the Midwest (men=11, women=32). It was predicted that giving students timed breaks would lower students’ amounts of media multitasking, as well as total number of distractions while studying. It was also predicted that using timed breaks would give students a stronger feeling of accomplishment in their studying. This study investigated how to promote resiliency among college undergraduate students by conducting a meta-analysis. This study focused on intervention styles and perceived stress. Mindfulness-based interventions produced a significant effect size with perceived stress. Undergraduate students who were given a mindfulness intervention significantly decreased in perceived stress. Given this, perhaps interventions designed to build mindfulness would be preferred to colleges and universities that are wanting to reduce the stress of their undergraduate students.

In this study, we explore different study strategies and their impacts on academic goals and achievements. Previous studies have found that students use certain study strategies depending on factors such as motivation and knowledge of the effectiveness different study strategies. Our results showed us that Northwestern students focused their studying on whatever was due next and they were not aware of the effectiveness of study habits as the majority of students reported that they were not taught how to study. The following research used factor analyses to test the PANAS with a diverse sample. Results revealed a 10-item, two-factor model that was verified using internal replication analysis. Positive and negative affect according to ethnic group revealed significant differences between groups. Findings from this study offer counseling researchers and practitioners a modified version of the PANAS for diverse clients.

Licensed counselors are underrepresented as mental health professionals (MHPs) servicing military-connected clients (service member/Veterans and their families). Mixed-methods research, conducted by the authors, highlights key viewpoints of MHPs (counselor, psychologist, and social worker) interested in working with the military and on their level of confidence in working with this population. MHPs’ experiences, perspectives of their profession’s responsibilities to military clients, and their role in comparison to other MHPs is explored. Findings aid in advocacy efforts for the military population to receive counseling from qualified providers and support counseling program development to increase counselor employability among this group.

A qualitative research design was used to listen to the experiences of women who engaged in science fiction fandom activities through online social media and how these experiences impacted their psychological well-being. The study targeted a specific population of science fiction fandom users who engaged in social media activities for at least one hour per week and had done so for at least one year. The sample consisted of 12 participants. Thematic analysis was used with the qualitative software program ATLAS.ti to analyze, code, and categorize data obtained via the transcripts. This phenomenological qualitative study examined a Southern regional sample (N=9) of rural school counselors’ perspectives of the procedures and processes that contributed to their ability to create safe zones in an effort to make their schools more LGBTQIA-affirming. The researchers identified five key themes and twelve subthemes. The key themes were: (a) organized support system, (b) collaborations with school leadership, (c) addressing challenges, (d) utilization of professional development resources, and (e) adherence to professional ethics.

Does Adherence To The Asca National Model Predict Job Satisfaction Among School Counselors?, Annette C. Riddle, Mary Bess W. Pannel

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between the services regularly offered by school counselors and their level of job satisfaction. The School Activity Rating Scale, the Job in General Scale, and a demographic questionnaire were implemented. Descriptive statistics described participant's demographic data and determine how school counselors rate their level of job satisfaction. Results indicated that school counselors reported an overall high level of career satisfaction. Inferential statistics determined whether adherence to the ASCA National Model predicts job satisfaction. Results showed a statistically significant difference existed between school counseling activities and job satisfaction.

In this phenomenological study, we explored experience of students (N=6) in group supervision within a practicum field experience course. Using a narrative-focused approach for data analysis and interpretation of journal entries, were created a thematic structure of the participants’ lived experiences using the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). Discussion and implications of this journal writing activity are offered to help reveal and understand the instructional effectiveness of a field practicum counseling course.

The high prevalence of youth aging out of the foster care system and the numerous poor outcomes they experience during the transition to emerging adulthood has been well documented. Although addressing the complex needs and concerns of this distinct population can be difficult, mental health counselors maintain the philosophical tenants and training strengths necessary to successfully serve youth aging out of foster care. This article aims to provide counselors with the historical context, developmental framework, and specific challenges needed to better understand this population, as well as suggested counseling implications to address their unique needs by reviewing relevant literature.

While the importance of dual enrollment programs has been demonstrated, the potential impact of completing college level courses during high school has on the emotional and mental wellbeing of adolescents has not been explored. This study used a nonexperimental, comparative, research design to explore the impact of completing college level courses during high school and the relationship to emotional and behavioral well-being of adolescents. Findings indicated self-esteem levels were statistically significant, specifically, dual enrolled students reported lower levels of self-esteem. School counselors are in a unique position to foster a successful, academic environment that also enhances emotional and mental wellness.

The investigation intended to identify publication trends in counseling journals and the field’s responsiveness to the refugee crisis and global climate. Themes of the publishing trends, gaps in the literature, and recommendations for future research are presented for the counseling field.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent diagnoses in youth, often resulting in impaired social and school functioning. Research on treatments for youth anxiety is primarily based in traditional clinical settings. However, integrating youth psychotherapies into the school environment improves access to evidence-based care. The present study is a pilot, randomized waitlist-controlled trial of a school-based, group acceptance and commitment therapy-based (ACT) intervention for adolescents with anxiety. Students at two separate schools (N = 26) with elevated anxiety were randomized to a 12-week waitlist or to immediate treatment.
