Mental Health In Student Leadership: Perceptions Of Ability, Rose M. Jardine

This proposal aims to evaluate the relationship between perceptions of mental health and leadership ability among student leaders in university communities.

Over fifty participants, including faculty and students, from Oregon universities and community colleges are expected to contribute to this study. Participants will answer a survey and be randomly assigned to one of four situations describing a student leader’s disclosure or non-disclosure, both with and without Bipolar 1 Disorder. Bipolar 1 Disorder was chosen for this study based on its intermittence, varying severity, higher associated stigma, and symptomatology that can include externally perceived increased productivity. Developments in research on promotive and prohibitive voice in workplaces have important implications for organizational innovation and prevention of unethical behavior. A substantial body of literature exists that examines work, nonwork, and stress in employed adults. Less is known about experiences of stress in adolescents and emerging adults. The goal of the present study is to examine the association between daily activities and next day stress within a sample of students. We propose that students use their personal resources to meet school demands, and then need to replenish those resources, or stress may ensure. Despite the need, there are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological treatments for methamphetamine use disorders. Cue-induced craving during drug withdrawal remains a significant contributor to high relapse rates. Thus, understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of cue-induced drug-seeking behavior is critical. Previous research indicates that the selective 5-HT_2A antagonist M100907 attenuates the acquisition of methamphetamine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in male and female adult rats. However, little to no research has examined factors that may influence the relation between problematic alcohol use and sleep disturbances among adolescents or adults. The purpose of this research is to assess the knowledge and opinions of the general public in rural areas in regard to genetic testing and pharmacogenomics. 40 people from self-identified rural areas participated in this study by completing an online Qualtrics questionnaire and an in-person or online semi-structured qualitative interview. Emerging adulthood (ages 18 to 29, typically in western cultures) is a period of high emotional volatility and shifts in peer relationships; therefore, the link between emotion regulation strategies (reappraisal, distraction, rumination, and suppression) and peer relationship quality must be examined. Furthermore, previous literature has found that supportive parent emotion socialization is related to healthier emotion regulation strategies in children. Study 1 found that reappraisal mediated the relationship between supportive parent emotion socialization and communication, suggesting that supportive parent emotion socialization teaches children to use reappraisal more, which aids in communication. Background: Previous studies of transgender/gender diverse (TGD) youth indicate differences in rates of sexual behaviors between TGD youth and their cisgender peers. However, few studies have reported the sexual behavior and preferences of TGD youth in a large clinic sample, and no studies, to our knowledge, have utilized questionnaires that do not assume the sex or gender of one’s sexual partner.

Although an overwhelming number of adolescents in the U.S. experience significant psychological distress, the majority of these youth do not receive formal mental health services. Mental health stigma has been identified as a significant barrier to psychological help-seeking during adolescence, with treatment stigma (or the stigma associated with seeking formal psychological services) as the strongest predictor of help-seeking when compared to other types of mental health stigma. This action research study was implemented over a three-week period in a first-grade classroom, collecting qualitative and quantitative data. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of Morning Meetings and Closing Circles on a sense of community in an elementary classroom. Preliminary findings show an increase in student social interactions, positive learning environment, and a climate of belonging. This presentation will also provide information on Morning Meetings and Closing Circles as an intervention to combat social and emotional competencies lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
