Theories of change and logic models are the industry standard foundation for impact evaluation. However, half of all nonprofits do not use these models due to resource constraints or the perception that their work does not fit into a model. This is especially true in relationship-based programs, such as those in faith-based social services. This Capstone examines the influence of relationship theory on a faith-based organization’s impact. The research methodology included deductive, action-based research with a foundational literature review focused on nonprofit planning and evaluation theory and social science theory. Historically, patients with dual diagnosis have been subjected to ineffective treatment and negative attitudes from healthcare providers. Further, these patients are plagued with myriad afflictions that exist beyond substance abuse and mental illness. The treatments and collateral damage associated with the diagnosis impose excessive healthcare costs and can be of significant detriment to society. Largely, patients suffering from dual diagnosis do not receive adequate treatment. As such, psychiatric emergency services are frequently utilized as an alternate treatment, wherein the main focus of care is on the substance abuse alone. The prevalence of anxiety in school-age children is on the rise. Schools offer a unique opportunity to identify children who struggle with symptoms of anxiety and to provide interventions to reduce anxiety. This project evaluated the results of providing the Coping Cat cognitive behavioral program in a public elementary school with a fourth-grade student named Dawson (a pseudonym) with a history of behavioral problems and a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Math is something that all students are required to use at some point during their academic careers. Then they must use it again in the real world. Unfortunately, many students struggle with quantitative processing. In the current study, participants answered first grade level math problems in order to assess cognitive effort when solving math problem. Participants were then assigned randomly to one of two conditions; Answer or Equation. An increase in the number of adults seeking ADHD evaluations as college students in recent years raises concerns of malingered or exaggerated attentional impairments. Some students may falsely report ADHD symptoms in an attempt to obtain academic accommodations as well as prescriptions for stimulant medications. Meanwhile, little attention has been given to the development of either self-reported measures or performance-based tests that can ensure the validity of reported or exhibited attentional symptoms. Freud and Jung are two of the most prominent and celebrated psychologists. Jung being a student of Freud's, the two's theories overlap considerably. Despite this lineage, however, there are marked differences between how the two theorists understood human behavior. This article highlights some of the major elements of both men's theories and offers criticisms and contextualizations to offer new perspectives in understanding these theories.

By using Frankenstein as a case study, my project explores readers’ and characters’ experiences with others who might appear threatening. Furthermore, I intend to apply theories from psychoanalysis and evolutionary psychology to deconstruct the ambiguity of relations with others and the self in answering: can a psychoanalytic reading of Frankenstein display how evolutionary literary criticism, sublime, and the uncanny affect and inform us about human relations. My argument has displayed how castigating a living being away from society recapitulates an evolutionary cycle of unconscious abuse which the critics, themselves, have also encountered.

With the objective of increasing volunteer retention, hospital administrators are interested in fostering volunteers’ motivation to continue working in the departments in which they have been placed. However, there is limited research on hospital volunteers’ motivation and whether setting goals affect their motivation. The purpose of my research was to examine whether hospital volunteers who set personal goals would increase their intrinsic motivation and tenure at a particular site. The purpose of this literature review is to address how internalized and externalized behaviors in adolescents impact academic achievement in faith-based institutions. This research intends to bring awareness to the prevalence of mental health concerns faced by adolescents, as well as the need for mental health services in the education system. This research will also identify the relationship between internalizing and externalizing behaviors, and academic achievement. In the spring of 2018, the Institute for the Prevention of Addictions conducted a survey of students at Andrews University (N=650). While a wide variety of health data were collected, this study focused on sexual orientation and mental health. Mental health was measured using the DASS depression, anxiety and stress scales. Sexual orientation was determined from the survey data. Bisexual students were significantly more likely to be classified in the extreme categories of the DASS compared to heterosexual students. These large differences indicate a significant mental health issue that the university needs to address.

A network analysis of personal and family religious media use identifies Bible reading as a core religious practice. Nodes representing reading Ellen White’s and other religious authors’ writings occupy a position between infrequently-accessed religious media and core practices; reading these authors points Adventists to the ‘greater light’ of the Bible.

We report a two-factor model of effective and failed nurture in the church—encouragement for wholeheartedness, efficacy in ministry, and belonging. Effective nurture explained a small amount of variance in well-being beyond controls including religious affiliation and behaviors, while failure to nurture explained substantial variance in religious stress and struggle.

Medication errors are the most common type of preventable error. Bar-code medication administration (BCMA) technology was designed to reduce medication administration errors. Poor system design, implementation and workarounds remain a cause of errors. This paper reviews the literature on BCMA, identifies a gap in the findings and identifies three evidence based practices that could be used to improve system implementation and reduce error. The literature review identified that Bar-code medication administration and system workarounds are well documented and affect patient safety. It is now common among visual scientists to make inferences about neural population coding of stimuli from indirect measures such as those provided by neuroimaging and psychophysics. The success of such studies depends strongly on simulation work using standard population encoding models extended with decoders (in psychophysics) and measurement models (in neuroimaging). However, not all studies are accompanied by simulation work, and those that are tend to vary widely in their assumptions about encoding, decoding, and measurement. This paper analyzes mass school shootings in the United States, stressing their root causes, indicators, demographics, and suggestive guidelines for preventable measures. Data draws associations between bullying, social dominance, and devalued masculinity amongst high school boys. Further, these trends emphasize homophobic harassment and the reassertion of lost dominance through violence. Moreover, research upholds media coverage and self-absorbed behavior as an additional precursor for inspired acts of malice. Journalistic representations of mass school shootings are identified as a source of motivation for vengeful and easily malleable youth. Recent research compared the ability of various classification algorithms [logistic regression (LR), random forests (RF), support vector machines (SVM), boosted regression (BR), multi-layer perceptron neural net model (MLP), and classification tree analysis (CTA)] to correctly fail to identify a relationship between a binary class (dependent) variable and ten randomly generated attributes (covariates): only CTA failed to find a model. We use the same ten-variable N=1,000 dataset to assess training classification accuracy of models developed by logistic discriminant analysis (LDA), generalized structural equation modelling (GSEM), and robust diagonally-weighted least-squares (DWLS) SEM for binary outcomes. Similarity and confidence are often analyzed in relation to eyewitness accuracy. Duds, highly dissimilar fillers, can impact an eyewitness’ accuracy and confidence. This study analyzed the impact of duds, similarity and accuracy in the context of lineup bias. This study found that in target-absent conditions there is a significant positive relationship between lineup bias and confidence. This study also found that highly similar lineups results in a lower proportion of correct identification, even in highly confident witnesses, compared to medium similar and low similar lineups. Further research should look closer at the “sweet spot” of similarity in order to advise …

Sixty percent of the current Rwandan population were born after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and those born since or who were young at the time of the genocide have remained among those affected most. Although Western trauma theorists and interventionists have played the role of experts in the genocide healing, the exclusion of the indigenous population’s experiences, knowledge, and wisdom has limited them from meeting local needs. The human visual system uses binocular disparity to perceive depth within 3D scenes. It is commonly assumed that the visual system needs oculomotor information about the relative orientation of the two eyes to perceive depth on the basis of binocular disparity. The necessary oculomotor information can be obtained from an efference copy of the oculomotor signals, or from a 2D distribution of the vertical disparity, specifically, from the vertical component of binocular disparity. This study examined the effects of age and gender on spatial navigation ability. Samoan Primary School students (N = 40) aged 7-12 years were tested on performance of a Size Test and a Corsi Test, followed by a Spatial Navigation Test. It was hypothesized that older children would perform better at all tasks, especially the Spatial Navigation Test. It was further hypothesized that males would perform better than females at the Spatial Navigation Test and that males would employ more detailed strategies in traversing the spatial navigation space. Alcoholism is a common occurrence. According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (1998), there are approximately 76 million Americans who have had a family member with an alcohol problem. Adult children of alcoholics (ACoAs) were studied to compare the differences between resiliency scores with adult children of non-alcoholics (NACoAs). We found that p = .022, indicating there was a significant difference among ACoAs and NACoAs. We found that NCoAs had a higher resiliency score than NACoAs. We also looked at differences in resiliency scores among the ACoAs who had a same gendered alcoholic parent and an opposite gendered …
