Classroom Structure As An Environmental Effect On Creative Production Of College Students, Krista A. Coulter '04

Little research has been done to explore creativity in the classroom environment. The present study investigated the effects of three classroom settings (formal, intermediate, and informal) on the creative production of college students. Ninety students were tested using Sternberg and Lubart's (1995) Creativity Assessments both before and after participation in a teaching session. No significant changes were found between classes mean creativity scores after the experimental session. In the intermediate classroom, there was a significant decrease in scores before and after the session; however, in the other two classrooms, formal and informal, there was no significant change found.

Positive Feedback On Appearance, Value Placed On Appearance, And Need For Disordered Eating Behavior Among Undergraduate Females, Amanda R. Conley '04

Negative feedback about appearance is often cited as a major contributor to unhealthy eating behavior among women. The present study examined whether positive feedback about appearance may also be associated with disordered eating behavior, particularly among women who place a high value on physical appearance. One hundred and nine female undergraduates at Illinois Wesleyan University completed surveys regarding positive appearance-related feedback received, value placed on physical appearance, need for approval, and eating attitudes. Analyses revealed that amount of positive feedback on physical appearance and value placed on appearance were both significantly positively correlated with disordered eating behavior. Although a great deal of research has been conducted regarding class participation, researchers have systematically disregarded those students who participate best through means other than vocal contribution to class discussion. This exploratory study examined definitions of participation, as well as participation behaviors and beliefs, in the hope of gaining a better understanding of the culture of participation. Participants included 17 professors and 101 students. Cluster analysis was conducted and showed the existence of at least three distinct groups of participators. This study examined whether marital functioning variables related uniquely to psychological distress and diagnoses of depressive disorder independent of pain severity and physical disability. Participants were 110 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients. Hierarchical regression results showed that marital variables (i.e. marital satisfaction, negative spouse responses to pain) contributed significantly to depressive and anxiety symptoms over and above the effects of pain severity and physical disability. In contrast, marital variables were not significantly related to diagnoses of depressive disorder (i.e. major depression, dysthymia, or both) after controlling for pain variables. This study explored how daily changes in workday pace and end-of-the-workday mood were related to nightly variations in withdrawn and angry marital behavior. For 3 days, 82 husbands and wives from 42 couples completed questionnaires at the end of the workday and at bedtime. More negatively arousing workdays were linked with angrier marital behavior for women and less angry and more withdrawn behavior for men. Daily changes in workday pace predicted fluctuations in women's, but not men's, marital behavior. Several of these workday-marital behavior connections varied by level of marital satisfaction. The purpose of the current study was to collect data from self-report measures (happiness, extraversion, depression, self-image, and self-esteem) created by laboratory students in conjunction with validated measures of state self-esteem, sensation seeking, and demographic variables that would allow for the reasonable application of a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to learn data analysis. An undergraduate under faculty supervision performed reliability analysis, correlational analysis, independent samples t tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and created a multiple regression model to better understand the application and conceptual logic underlying many of the statistical tests …

Life Experience In Selective Attention, Jacquelyn M. Davis

This correlational study investigated the role of substance use and experience in selective attention using a modified Stroop color-naming task. Thirty-three individuals completed Adult Substance Use Surveys and a computergenerated Stroop task modified by substituting drug words for color names. The prediction was that level of life disruption would interrupt task performance such that those scoring higher on disruption would display slower reaction times. Results revealed life disruption to be significantly correlated with reaction time. Those scoring highest on the disruption measure exhibited slower Stroop reaction times than those with lower disruption scores. These results suggest that treatment interventions targeting …

Recent acts of aggressive and delinquent behavior have initiated a search for the predictors of adolescent delinquent behavior. Poor psychological well-being could lead to depression, suicide, and apathy which may be related to delinquency. Research indicates that parent influences on well-being influence the quality of peer relationships which then influences delinquent behavior. This review examines direct and interactional influences of aspects of the parent-adolescent and peer relationships on different aspects of adolescent wellbeing and delinquent behavior. Episodic-like memory for the "where" component of unique events was examined in an adult gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). The gorilla witnessed a unique event, performed by an experimenter (e.g. watching an experimenter blow bubbles) at one of three locations surrounding his enclosure. After a 4 to 17 minute retention interval, a tester presented the gorilla with photographs of the three locations, which were mounted on wooden cards, and asked the gorilla where the event had occurred. The gorilla communicated his choice by handing a card to the tester and was rewarded if correct. The gorilla was significantly above chance at …

Recent stressful environments within military and non-military domains are producing a new challenge for the lab-based study of stress on task performance, one that requires knowledge of underlying cognitive-motivational and goal orientation factors. Results of recent stress on task performance research traditionally employ metaphorical explanations (i.e., resource theory) in order to rapidly apply stimulus-response outcomes to the real world counterparts. Technological innovations in data transfer and communication have given rise to the virtual team where geographically separate individuals interact via one or more technologies to combine efforts on a collective activity. In military, business, and spaceflight settings, virtual teams are increasingly used in training and operational activities; however there are important differences between these virtual collaborations and more traditional face-to-face (FTF) interactions. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relation between measurement bias at the item level (differential item functioning, dif) and predictive bias at the test score level. Dif was defined as a difference in the probability of getting a test item correct for examinees with the same ability but from different subgroups. Predictive bias was defined as a difference in subgroup regression intercepts and/or slopes in predicting a criterion. Data were simulated by computer.
