Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler

The effect of the previous history of a single unit on its present firing pattern was studied using classical and operant conditioning. The units were in area 18a of the rat's cortex. It was found that there are polymodal units in that area. The firing pattern can be changed using classical conditioning. The rate of firing can be increased one standard deviation above the mean rate by reinforcing with brain stimulation. The rate can also be changed one standard deviation below the mean rate. The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker

A six-month-old infant was conditioned to imitate four verbal cues presented by an adult experimenter by using food as a reinforcer. Aversive schedules (escape-avoidance of, or punishment with a loud buzzer) were then introduced to suppress inattentive behavior. Inattention defined as looking away from the investigator, crying, rate of vocalizations, and accuracy of imitations were measured. Three conclusions of the experiment were: 1) verbal imitation can be shaped and maintained through positive reinforcement; 2) the use of aversive schedules is not necessarily beneficial for the performance of the imitative task, or for the general well-being of the child.

In Experiment I, the effects of low fixed ratios on individual escape behavior of rats was studied. When FR sessions were compared to CRF sessions, measures related to shock delivery showed highest percentage increases, especially at FR-5.

Animals were then paired. Two schedules were analyzed as alternatives to individual escape. In Experiment II, shock was terminated when a specified FR was completed, either by the responses of one animal or by the total responses of both animals. Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. This study sought to investigate the personality traits of psychology students. No significant differences were found between a group of psychology majors and a control group on any of the scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

The findings do show that college students, as a group, are more deviant in their responses on the MMPI than the general adult population.

The subjects were 80 students enrolled in seven psychology classes at Eastern Illinois University.

The t ratio was used for evaluating the difference between means for each scale.

Investigators have used many different values for the ITI in investigating the variables in matching-to-sample. Holt and Shafer (1973), showed that the ITI itself influences matching performance. In the present experiment the titration method was employed to determine the optimal or "preferred" ITI for pigeons. Three Ss began each session with an ITI of 0 sec. Three other Ss began each session with an ITI of 60 sec. During the session two consecutive correct responses reduced the ITI by 2 secs while a single error would increase the ITI by 2 secs. The field for research on women offenders provides an extensive opportunity for scientific investigation. Many writers (Gibbons, 1971; Cunningham, 1964; Sutherland, 1968) have discussed the causes of crime and their resulting social implications. Organized mass presentations of the movement of crime among women is negligible. Today female incarcerates make up approximately 11 per cent (Lerner, 1972) of the total number in state and federal penitentiaries. Previous research (Cunningham, 1964) on female felons found poor self-concept, excessive dependency and pathological emotionality to be a consistent pattern in women criminals. A spatial titration method was used with a reinforcement schedule to determine task-reinforcement area separation most preferred and effective in producing high task performance. Two third-grade boys were given task contingent reinforcement where the task was solving arithmetic problems. Following shaping to stable response rates, the titration operation was introduced. Errors decreased the task-reinforcement area distance while correct responses increased the distance. With the introduction of Titration Phase 1, both subjects' incorrect responses produced a zero task-reinforcement area separation.
