Weather represents one of the greatest hazards to general aviation (GA), accounting for 15% of the GA accident fatalities. Of the fatal weather accidents 90% are attributed to visual flight rules (VFR) flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The situation assessment hypothesis suggests that pilots may inadvertently enter IMC because they lack the sensitivity needed to distinguish between visual meteorological conditions (VMC) and IMC. An alternative hypothesis is that pilots recognize conditions have deteriorated but are motivated by some other factor, such as pressure from passengers. The association between use of corporal punishment as a disciplinary technique and specific aspects of the family environment was examined through surveying undergraduate students enrolled in psychology classes at Old Dominion University. Also investigated was the relationship between corporal punishment and certain affective and personality variables. The Conflict Tactics Scale CTSPC-CA was utilized to measure the level of corporal punishment experienced by all 274 participants. However, only those respondents with the 75 highest and 75 lowest corporal punishment scores were compared in statistical analyses. The present study was designed to examine whether differences in the ability to search for the presence and absence of features are moderated by differences in the ability of individuals to perceive separate parts of the visual field as distinct from the background (field dependence/independence). The present study examines the relationship between leadership and performance for teleworkers. Secondary data analysis was used to examine the effects of the Full Range Leadership Theory on the task and contextual performance of 127 teleworkers. Moderated regression analyses show that affect-based trust only moderates the relationship between laissez-faire leadership and task performance. Mediation analyses show that affect-based trust partially mediates the relationship between all three types of leadership and two types of performance. This study shows that affect-based trust is an important element of the relationship between leaders and teleworkers. Future research should further examine the influence of trust …

Psychological researchers need methods for obtaining accurate responses from participants when using questionnaire data. The current study looked at the influence of negatively worded scale items on the overall scale. The NEO-PI (Costa & McCrae, 1992) and four versions of that scale were used to test the impact of negatively worded items. The NEO-PI and each of its versions contained differing amounts of negatively worded items. More than 1,100 participants were used in this study, with approximately 230 people responding to each version of the NEO-PI. While Integrity tests have demonstrated significant predictive and concurrent validity, the meaning and structure of integrity test scores are not well understood. The purpose of the present investigation was to empirically verify the results of a previous study that used an inductive method to define integrity and identify its constituent dimensions (Green, 1999). Archer, Handel, and Lynch (2001) recently compared the item endorsement frequencies for the MMPI-A normative sample against two adolescent clinical samples. Results showed that the MMPI-A contains a substantial number of items that do not show a significant difference in item endorsement frequency between normative and clinical samples. This investigation examined body-image states in the context of daily life. There were 108 women who completed all three phases of this study. First, a battery of body image trait measures and an eating attitudes measure were completed. Second, participants called an automated telephonic response system twice daily for six days and recorded their current body-image states, from the questions on the Body Image States Scale. Finally, a Post-Study Questionnaire was completed. Pearson correlations examined the extent to which the pretest measures predicted the level and variability of body-image states. This study examined participants' beliefs/attributions about depression, their help seeking recommendations for depressed individuals, and the stigma associated with depression. Participants were asked to read a vignette that described a target person who is suffering from depression, and they were asked to complete various questionnaires based upon the vignette. Overall, the results indicated that individuals did not possess negative attitudes toward mental illness, that individuals more strongly recommended professional mental health assistance, and that individuals did not tend to stigmatize depressed individuals. The Effects Of Transformational And Transactional Leadership On Job Satisfaction Affective Commitment And Turnover Intentions Among Teleworkers, Janet L. Bryant

This study is among the first to examine the influence of leadership among teleworkers. Effects of transformational and transactional leadership on job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intentions were examined in a secondary data analysis of 128 teleworkers. Hierarchical linear regression results support the influence of both forms of leadership on these outcomes, although an augmentation effect for transformational leadership was observed only for affective commitment and turnover intentions. Findings from moderated regression analyses indicate that the effect of transformational leadership degrades with increasing telework frequency. The role of self-management practices in task and citizenship performance was examined with data from 127 participants employed as teleworkers by eight public and private organizations. A self-management practices instrument was validated. The instrument was then used to investigate the effect of self-management on task and citizenship performance. The use of two self-management practices, goal setting and external aids, successfully predicted both task and citizenship performance, Results of the study provide evidence that the use of self-management may impact several performance domains. Discussion focused on the implications of the results for managing remote workers.

Fathers and mothers (N = 75 dual-earner couples) of preschool-aged children completed questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., directly interacting with the child), responsibility (i.e., scheduling activities and being accountable for the child's well-being), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child but not in direct interaction). Fathers' reports of responsibility and accessibility were significantly predicted by structural variables and beliefs; however, fathers' reports of engagement were not predicted by work and family variables. Mothers' reports of work and family variables did not predict their reports of father involvement. …

This study assessed the seldom-considered aspect of measurement equivalence across the three most common rater groups in 360-degree feedback systems. The graded response model for polytomous items was used to assess differential functioning of items and tests and applied to an archival data set of 664 ratees to determine the equivalence of peer, subordinate, and supervisor ratings of four leadership competencies. The results indicate that the leadership competencies were invariant across the three rater groups. The results and conclusions produced are discussed with practical implications in mind.

African-American and European-American participants were surveyed to determine the relationship of ethnicity, ethnic identity, and type of presenting problem on preferences for counselor ethnicity. Participants indicated their preferences for counselor characteristics, including ethnicity, for personal and academic problems. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and regression techniques. The results indicated that African American participants prefer ethnically similar counselors and all participants with high ethnic identity prefer ethnically similar counselors. The results suggested that participants prefer different characteristics for different problems. Participants indicated more willingness to seek help for academic problems. The study investigated the impact of chronic childhood asthma on mothers' employment. The participants included 287 mothers, 143 with asthmatic children and 144 with children without any limiting conditions, who participated in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth in 1998. It was hypothesized that when compared to mothers of children with no limiting health conditions, mothers of children with asthma would be less likely to work at all, would be more likely to work part-time, would work fewer hours per week, would be more likely to lose time from work and would have more lost time from work.
