Objectives: To investigate body image and psychosocial adjustment among competitive bodybuilders, non-competitive weight trainers, and athletically active men.

Methods: Participants were 40 men in each of the three groups who were assessed on body composition and multiple facets of body image evaluation, investment and anxiety, eating attitudes, and social self esteem.

Results: Relative to the other two groups, competitive bodybuilders had greater body mass due to fat-free body mass. Although groups did not differ in their situational body image discomfort, competitive bodybuilders and weight trainers had a more positive global appearance evaluation and were more psychologically invested in their physical …

Advanced technologies have enabled the choice of either visual or auditory formats for avionics and surface transportation displays. Methods of assessing the mental workload imposed by displays of different formats are critical to their successful implementation. Towards this end a series of investigations were conducted with the following aims: 1) developing analogous auditory and visual versions of a secondary task that could be used to compare display modalities; and 2) to compare the sensitivity of neurophysiological, behavioral and subjective indices of workload. Body image is a multidimensional construct that has received increasing scientific study over the past few decades. Considerable research has examined the determinants of body image development and functioning and their implications for other aspects of psychosocial wellbeing, especially eating pathology among girls and young women. Cafri, Yamamiya, Brannick, and Thompson (this issue) reported the results of a meta-analysis of how selected, self-reported sociocultural influence variables correlate with the basic dimension of body image evaluation. Their work raises and reinforces important questions about the definition and measurement of sociocultural influence constructs.

This study examines the influence of work-family conflict (WFC) on work-related outcomes among teleworkers. Effects of work interfering with family (WIF) and family interfering with work (FIW) on telework satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intentions were examined in a secondary data analysis of 167 teleworkers. The effects of several demographic variables (gender, duration of the telework arrangement, number of children, and frequency of teleworking) on WFC were also examined. Structural equation modeling results support the influence of WIF on telework satisfaction and turnover intentions. The influence of FIW on the work outcomes was not supported. Previous research has shown that manipulating the acoustic features of auditory alarms can alter their perceived urgency. Research has shown that increasing the perceived urgency of nonverbal auditory alarms can significantly improve response degradation due to alarm mistrust. This study determined if the effect of perceived urgency on response performance also applies to verbal alarm systems. Forty graduate and undergraduate psychology students from Old Dominion University were sampled for this study. The experimenter examined participant performance during four experimental sessions. Recent research has demonstrated that certain individual differences predispose some to experience more work-family conflict. The primary goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of display integration in a simulated commercial aircraft cockpit equipped with a synthetic vision display. Combinations of display integration level (low/high), display view (synthetic vision view/traditional display), and workload (low/high) were presented to each participant. Sixteen commercial pilots flew multiple approaches under IMC conditions in a moderate fidelity fixed-base part-task simulator. Pilot performance data, visual activity, mental workload, and self-report situation awareness were measured.

The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate the responses to stimuli predicting the onset of hypoglycemia {HG), specifically the overt behavioral and glycemic conditioned responses to insulin-produced HG. When drug-opposite compensatory responses become associated with situational and environmental cues that predict drug administration, compensatory mechanisms can be elicited solely by drugassociated cues. The acceptance of euthanasia is examined using the 1972-2002 GSS cumulative dataset. The dataset contains a total of 43,698 respondents. The euthanasia question, "Should a terminally ill patient be allowed the right to die?" was asked beginning in 1977. The number of respondents answering the euthanasia question totals 22,039. The independent variables age, race, gender, political view, religious affiliation, and education were reviewed to assess their impact on support of euthanasia. Additionally, in order to test the "slippery slope" hypothesis, the abortion question, "Should abortion be allowed under any circumstance?" was added to the independent variable list. The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) was developed to train Equal Opportunity Advisors (EOAs), implement training programs at the unit level, and evaluate the Equal Opportunity Climate of the military. Many of the programs developed at DEOMI were developed with the belief that diversity appreciation and prejudice avoidance (DAPA) lead to combat readiness and operational effectiveness (CROE).

The purpose of the study was to examine drinking and driving behaviors among different socioeconomic status neighborhoods. This study included a telephone survey that measured demographics, characteristics of the environment, and self-report alcohol use. In addition to the telephone survey, the researcher examined archival data such as alcohol-related traffic crash reports. Geographical information systems (GIS) programming was used to graphically plot alcohol-related traffic crash locations simultaneously with the locations of alcohol outlets. Sixty-nine male and 40 female full-time employees of the Ford Motor company completed a survey assessing the relationships between satisfaction with childcare (i.e., overall satisfaction with childcare, satisfaction with cost, satisfaction with provider, satisfaction with hours of operation, and satisfaction with location) and overall stress, job stress, work-family conflict, and parenting stress. Although most respondents were satisfied with the child's provider, and moderately satisfied with their childcare arrangements overall and with the location of their childcare, the typical respondent was dissatisfied with the cost of childcare and neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the hours of operation. This study compared the perceptions of diversity among current graduate students, former graduate students, and current faculty in three graduate programs. Sense of belonging, universality, openness to experience, diversity experiences, and perceptions of diversity were examined. Participants included 64 current students, 30 former students, and 15 faculty members in Old Dominion University's M.S. and Ph.D. programs in psychology and the Virginia Consortium Program's Psy.D. program. Solicited by either email or postal mail, participants completed an online survey that assessed demographic details and the variables of interest. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether or not watching sexually explicit music videos will affect how different women are perceived in different situations. There were 301 subjects recruited from Old Dominion University. The mean age was 20.5 and there were 189 women and 111 men. The participants watched two music videos and rated the main performer in the music video. Next, they watched an interview video and rated the person in the interview. Many researchers have shown that child safety seats are being misused 80 to 85% of the time. In the present study, child safety seat checks were conducted at two local daycare facilities, in which child safety seats were checked for misuse and drivers (at one site) received hands-on training from certified technicians. Hands-on training, for the purposes of this study, was defined as showing drivers mistakes in their seat installations, then having the drivers re-install the seats correctly with coaching by the technicians. Dual-earner parents (N = 119) of preschool children enrolled in licensed childcare centers completed anonymous questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., one-on-one interaction with the child), responsibility (i.e., taking care of the child*s needs), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child without directly interacting). Fathers' reports of responsibility were predicted by beliefs about fathering and structural variables (i.e., hours worked). Similarly, fathers' beliefs about fathering and efficacy in the parenting role predicted fathers' reports of engagement. Although outcomes for people in substance abuse treatment have been well examined, little is known about the efficacy of processes for referring people into such treatment. This report gives results from an ongoing study that is empirically assessing the efficacy of substance abuse treatment referrals for U.S. Navy personnel. The overall referral success rate (persons recommended for treatment and enrolled within 60 days of that recommendations) was found to be only 54.2%. Technological advances have allowed for widespread implementation of automation in complex systems. However, the increase in quantity and complexity of advanced automated systems has raised a number of potential concerns including degraded monitoring skills. The present investigation consisted of two studies that assessed the impact of system reliability, complacency potential, monitoring complexity, operator trust, and system experience on monitoring performance. In both studies, participants monitored a simulated aviation display for failures while operating a manually controlled flight task. Previous research offers inconsistent findings with respect to attitude and behavior differences for contingent and permanent workers. The current study proposes the psychological contract as an explanatory framework for understanding differences between contractors and regular employees. The hypotheses examined attitudinal and behavioral measures: organizational commitment, job satisfaction, intent to quit, job performance, and organizational citizenship behaviors. The two components of the psychological contract (relational vs. transactional) were thought to impact differentially the outcome measures. The objective of the study was to investigate whether school-aged children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience greater sleep disturbance than do normally-developing children. Participants included 33 parents and their children with ADHD (mean age = 10.7 ± 1.7 years) and 33 parents and their children without ADHD (mean age = 10.7 ± 1.6 years). Both parents and their children completed sleep questionnaires developed to assess a number of sleep variables. This study investigated the relationship among disclosure, internalized homophobia, and religiosity in a lesbian population and how these three variables are related to psychological well-being in order to build upon the scant amount of empirical research on these variables in the lesbian psychological literature.
