Following the success of Alfred Binet's test of intellectual ability, many tests with many different purposes were developed. Some of these tests are referred to as tests of ability, others seek to establish the subject's typical performance or how he is most likely to act in a given situation. Personality tests fall into this second class. The two general methods of personality are referred to as unstructured and structured techniques. The unstructured method is time-consuming. Response set has been defined by Cronbach (1946) as "any tendency causing a person consistently to give different responses to test items than he would when the same content is presented in a different form. " It has been described by Barnes (1955) as the perseveration of the response "true" on a true-false test or of the neutral response on a yes-no test. Lorge (1937) reported that high self-confidence scores on the Berneuter Personality Inventory correlated .27 with tendencies to circle "yes' on several tests . The problem was to investigate the adequacy of the testing program used for the assessment of intellectual abilities of primary school children in the Kanawha County Schools, Kanawha County, West Virginia. The Kanawha County School System has administered the Otis Quick-Scoring Alpha, short form, to third-grade students. Scores on these tests have been utilized for the assessment of the intellectual abilities of pupils in the primary grades throughout the county, furnishing subsequent aid in curriculum planning, and also helping teachers to assess the scholastic capability of individual students.

It is the purpose of the study to evaluate the following hypothesis: There exists among students now in college a certain incidence of compulsitivity as indicated by an experimentally devised ratios of compulsion neurosis to hysteria*; this incidence is greater among those now in college than those not in college.

It is also a purpose of this study to contribute experimental evidence to the frequently reported observation that compulsion neurosis occurs more frequently in men than women.
